http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/07/19/link-brad-smith-3-qb/ http://espn.go.com/blog/new-yorkjets/post/_/id/680/camp-preview-quarterbacks I like the idea, have more roster spots open for our defensive side and getting Brad Smith more involved is always a plus in my eyes. The more snaps he takes the more dangerous he could be using the Wild Cat.
Isn't there some rule that if the 3rd string qb comes in the other 2 abs are not allowed back into the game.
Yeah you're right- 1) The two quarterbacks on the 45-player active list must be bona fide quarterbacks: a club is not permitted to designate as one of its two quarterbacks a player whose primary position is not quarterback. 2) It is not necessary that the club’s first two quarterbacks be injured in order for the third quarterback to participate; his participation is purely a coaching decision. Likewise, if the third quarterback initially enters the game during the fourth period or an overtime period, the permissible return of either of the club’s other two quarterbacks is purely a coaching decision. 3) Under no circumstances can the third quarterback participate in the game at the same time as either of the club’s other two quarterbacks. SO I guess this is not happening. Another great reporting job by Rich. I apologize for making it worse and introducing it here.
Brad Smith won't be the #3 QB. He was probably taking reps back there to pratice his tricks or to expand his usage to more gimmick plays.
Yes, like the '99 opener when we lost Vinny. That's why Tupa was our QB until the 4th qtr and as it turned out it was too bad we didn't leave him in. It's a risk doing that, hopefully we don't get burned if we do it.
I was just reading about that. I think in todays NFL, that rule needs to be revisited. Obviously this WC thing has taken off and that rule does seem odd. Seems too much like a baseball rule, if that makes any sense. That'd be like using our #3 LB, and not our #2, and then not being able to use him for the rest of the game. It's a very odd rule for the NFL.
If nothing else, we need a 3rd QB to imitate the opposing team's QB in practice. I agree we have too many QBs but we don't cut Clemens. Ainge, and O'Connell without bringing in at least one QB.
Brad Smith is the gadget guy for the Jets. Seeing he doesn't possess many WR skills they probably decided to make him work less as a WR and develop his passing skills more. since he's our "wildcat" guy it makes sense. He won't have to catch as many balls (at least not in a traditional WR way). PS That means we'll have 3 QBs on the roster and B. Smith still listed as a WR.
That's exactly right - neither Brad Smith nor Mark Brunell is going to be playing QB on the show team. The Jets need a righty who can play traditional under-center QB to simulate the opposing QB.
Yeah I still find it funny that we list him as a WR. Of all the things he does well that's not one of them. Is there anything in the rule that prevents the #3 QB from calling the defensive plays? Would save a roster spot. Think about it...
I've never heard of those rules regarding the #3 QB - they seem really strange to me. It seems like rotating 3 QBs during a game would almost certainly be disadvantageous to the team doing it. Why would those restrictions be there in the first place?
yep. Its a 1/10000 chance that the 3rd string guy gives you a decent and exciting season. Usually the season is lost and its all over.
I think you are referring to the emergency QB. They do not occupy game day roster spot, hence once they are in, they can not be subbed out.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the reasoning behind this is because the 3rd QB is usually not on the active roster. If we put 3 QBs on our active roster, I'm sure we'd be allowed to use all 3 at any time during the game
This. Running the wildcat doesn't count as being an actual QB. If he had to go in there and stand in the pocket the season would be doomed, and we're not a team that can run the option and the wildcat all day.
No way.. there's no way Brad Smith is going to be listed as the #3 QB. He's a talented player and an asset to the offense.. they're not going to put him in a position where he never sees the field.
