IMO, Cotchery is our best receiver. He's definitely more suited to the #2 spot, but he has great hands and runs great routes. So who do we think will step up to be the true #1 on this team?

In this corner, 6' 3" and weighing in at 215 lbs, Braylon "Stone Hands" Edwards. This speedster out of Michigan has not only perfect size, blistering speed and unreal athletic talent, but the uncanny ability to drop sure td's and long gains, even allowing the ball to bounce off his face mask.

In the opposite corner, coming in at 5' 11" and weighing in at 192 lbs, is Santonio Stone Head" Holmes, a speedster out of Ohio State. Clocking with a 4.36 40 time, and being on the receiving end of one of the most spectacular TDs in the history of the game, this dumbass just can't keep out of trouble. Multiple citations and arrests for drug possession and domestic violence have marred his career from the start.

So which of these guys steps up and becomes the man? My money is on Holmes. He's a good football player, he just needs to stay the hell out of trouble. Edwards just doesn't have his head on the game, and I'm not convinced he ever will. So much talent, and it does no good if the guy's heart isn't in it. Compare him to Chrebet, and you'll see what I mean. Chrebet did so much more with so much less because his heart was in the game. Put Wayne's head on Edwards body a,d you'd have the ultimate wide receiver.

Countdown to bad photoshopped Chredwards pics....

I personally think Edwards is going to have an absolute monster year. Just from following the guy on twitter and the countless articles about him this offseason, it really sounds like this could be the year where be becomes an elite receiver for good.

Id bet on Holmes having a pretty good year as well, mostly since if he doesnt his career instantly goes into limbo and hell be forced to take a mediocre contract from a shitty team. But with the 4 game suspension, his role being somewhat undefined, and the short amount of time he will have spent with Sanchez theres no way I see him being "the guy" this year.

Braylon is going to have a monster year. The fourth of the season that Holmes will miss makes this no contest. First time Braylon has spent this long someplace he's happy and it will show. Love this guy and you will too in six months.

BTW I'm STOKED Santonio Holmes is a Jet

I see you're back in form old buddy.. :)

I like Edwards for some strange reason. I have a feeling his problems are between his ears and Holmes sadly is the perverbial landmine waiting to be stepped on by some unsuspecting fan thinking he's gonna change. It's been my experience that people are who they are and their base personalities simply don't change unless there's some life threatening episode. Therefore, I'm for Edwards to somehow remove his head from his ass and start catching the easy ones as well as the circus catches..

Edwards will have the biggest year in terms of numbers but ultimately I'm guessing Holmes is the one that sticks on the roster and he'll have a better career...

Nice to get back to talking some football with the smartest fans around. I've finally got my life into some semblance of order, and even have some free time again. I miss this place when I don't post here.

And I would LOVE to see Edwards become the man. He is so gifted its incredible. But those drops are awful, and he's done it consistently throughout his career. He has to prove he can do it before I'll believe he actually can. So far, all he's proven is that the Cleveland fans were right about him. They were saying these same things about him at Michigan too. There was a big controversy about him wearing the #1 jersey because he didn't have the work ethic. He's proven pretty consistently throughout his entire career that what he's best at is underachieving.

All of that was why I loved the Holmes move so much. Maybe the competition, along with some direct Rex intervention and coaching, will motivate him enough to take it to that elite level. If he can step it up to that level, this offense will be unreal.

Edwards is a beast and Holmes is clutch. Maybe they both step up!

I would take Braylon over Holmes if we had to choose one to extend right now. He's more physically gifted and I think his dropped balls are overrated. Not to mention what he brings to the run game as a blocker.

Pretty much this. I'm rooting for Edwards, he has the talent to be top 7 wide receiver, and could really be the man for this team, but I'm not expecting it. I expect frustration when he makes a crazy catch and then drop one hitting him in the chest. Holmes will be clutch as he shown in the past.

Not sure you can fault Braylon on effort. He busts his ass man, and he blocks, and he gives a damn. Yep, he drops some balls... but question his melon not his heart or commitment.
Personally I'm really rooting for him this year.
That said, Holmes is a very, very talented WR. With speed to burn.
I'll just say this... it's nice to be having a discussion over which former Stud WR will step up for us this year. This team be STACKED.

Not gonna lie with the way the rules in the nfl are that favor passing so much, and the fact that we have our franchise QB now. I think keeping Santonio/Edwards/Cotch possibly should be our #1 priority after keeping the Oline intact (ok and after revis too).

Its just the rules favor passing so much that having such an elite receiving corps really could be that much more game changing than say a MLB like Harris or Scott. (and this is coming from someone who Harris is probably my favorite player on defense)

Both of their fates rest solely on the arm on Sanchez. If Sanchez has a bad season, the WRs won't appear to have 'stepped it up' at all.

Regardless, the offseason news surrounding Edwards has been encouraging. Apparently, he is working really hard and has rededicated himself.

I think it was more like 6 but yea, he didn't really have a problem with hands last season with the exception of a couple in big spots that really stuck in peoples heads. Holmes dropped more than twice as many, but no one ever refers to his hands ...

    Braylon.

This dude has the talent to be a top-3 receiver in this league... if he ever gets his head on straight. Just a flat out monster when he's on.

Huh? He spent 4 years at Michigan, then 4 and a half in Cleveland. He's been with the Jets for 9 months.

The fact that those drops were in big spots is why it gets brought up, and rightfully so. On the plus side, he has to know that it's the one part of his game that needs serious improvement and I believe that he can work through it. If Tiki Barber can stop fumbling the football, then Braylon Edwards can stop dropping it.

As for the original question, I don't think that either guy will step up and be "the man" in a traditional sense because the Jets will still be a running team first and foremost. I think that Sanchez will come to rely on Holmes more than Edwards though, because the presence of Edwards and Cotchery on the outside plus Keller moving around the field will open up a lot of space for Holmes in the slot.

first off he meant, that since being in the NFL, he has never been in a spot where he was actually happy, thus he wasn't giving it everything he had in cleveland.

secondly I agree that edwards can crack the dropping problem. But he really only dropped a handful last season, all on the deep passes when he was wide open, which means it is entirely mental and him over-thinking it.

Thirdly I don't think there will be a go-to-guy per say. One week it will be Braylon being the stud, next week Cotch will be unstoppable, then it will be Keller catching 2 TD's in the redzone the next week, then in week 5 Holmes will explode for 125 and a TD, then the next week it will be LT leading us in receptions.

It will be just like with our RB's, go with the hot hand, whoever has it that day will be the "go-to-guy" for that week.

Brings to mind the movie "DodgeBall". "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.." Maybe we can get Bart Scott to start throwing wrenches at Edwards. "If you can catch a wrench, you can catch a ball"
