ESPN The Magazine this week released its Ultimate Standings, ranking the 122 teams in the four major professional sports in a variety of categories based on feedback from fans. One of them, “Coaching,” is described as “strength of on-field leadership.” Ryan, about to enter his second season with the Jets, was ranked as the fourth best coach, tied with Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, behind Mike Scioscia (Angels), Sean Payton (Saints) and Gregg Popovich (Spurs). All but Ryan have won their respective league championships at least once. He was ranked ahead of the Patriots’ Bill Belichick (sixth) and the Lakers’ Phil Jackson (10th), among others. 4th? Rex Ryan is the 4th best coach in all of professional sports? This is an outrage! It’s barbaric. Barbaric! Everyone knows he’s the best coach in the world, and making him share the lowly 4th spot with some nobody like Mike Babcock is an insult. I mean, how is ESPN measuring “coaching”? By success? Track record? Consistent excellence? Championships? Puh-leeze. Who cares about those? And if you’re going by “strength of on-field leadership” like they say, then he definitely should be No. 1. And by a Secretariatish margin. After all, this is the same Rex Ryan who led the Jets to a 7-7 record before sweeping the Colts and Bengals junior varsity squads to make the playoffs. Then he out coached the incomparable Norv Turner in the playoffs. How can anyone say Shrex isn’t the greatest coach ever to squeeze his melon into a set of headphones? OK, I’ll stop there before I rupture a sarcasm tendon. All seriousness aside, how is this result even remotely possible? There are only two explanations: 1) The poll numbers were skewed by an organized voting bloc, like “Vote for the Worst” tries to get “American Idol” fans to vote for the Sanjayas of the world or the time Howard Stern listeners voted Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf the People magazine “Sexiest Man Alive.” Or 2) Jets fans are more numerous and way more delusional than I’d feared. I'm sorry I love this man and all but theres no way he deserves to be called the 4th best coach in all of sports. Hes changed the culture of the entire organization but he hasn't proven anything until he can win consistently in this league and one season mean anything if you can't do either as good or better the next time around.
well, keeping the dialog to the NFL, what 'other' coach would you rather have leading our team into the 2010 season? Shotty? Al Davis? i bet over 90% of the teams in the league would prefer rex over whomever they currently have. the GMs that passed on rex 2 years ago will have short careers.
Yeah, Ozzie Newsome is the next Matt Millen. :breakdance: I'd rather have Rex Ryan than any coach in the NFL, but that doesn't mean he's the best coach in all the land. In all fairness, he's not even the best coach in the AFC East. ...yet.
I'm sorry, and as much as I love Rex, he without a doubt deserves this and I love him more now. He's just a SB win away from #1. He's changing everything negative about the Jets and he single handedly made this team the shit!
Although I truly despise Bill Belichick with every fiber of my being, ranking Rex Ryan over him is a joke. We can only hope that the Jets deliver on their potential, bring back a title, and make this ranking make some sense.
Beating off to make believe ESPN awards is pretty lame. I get it... we are all desperate to have officially won something. However, trying to add some kind of clout to anything ESPN does pretty hinky. Just be patient... we can all celebrate when we finally win that damn trophy.
It's clout to add to all the other stuff - Hard Knocks, Madden 11 picks, wins by players on individual lists (eg USA DPOY Revis; Top young 25: Sanchez & Revis, etc). I love Rex as much as anyone, but this was way too premature. I'm actually starting to get worried. I don't mind the NY metro media coverage but the national attention is starting to get to me. Either this team is destined for big things (which I am hoping) or we are being setup for Epic Fail...
I miss the good old days... you know where it was the "no respect" team, being the ultimate underdogs, SoJs.... ok, well not that last part. Don't miss that.
Football > Baseball > Basketball > Soccer > Tennis (except hot womans tennis) > Hocky > Figure Skating (except hot lesbian skating) > Shuffleboard. So football is king. And Rex is king of football. therefore Rex is numero uno. /thread
I don't miss those days. We haven't won a SB in over 40 years, and now we have the team and the attitude to do it.
Jeezus, first the book, then talk of him being the 4th best coach in all of sports. Aren't we getting a little ahead of ourselves here?
That seems a bit high for a guy who has only coached 16 games as a head coach. I love Rex, though, so I think it's kinda cool that everyone is drinking the kool-aid.
