What do u guys want the o-line to look like and what do you guys think the O-line will look like? and what do you guys think of teague playing RT and having AJ sit?
I hope the line this year is: LT-Ferguson, LG-Kendall, C-Mangold, RG-Moore, RT-Jones... obviously, the 2 rookies are a question but i hope they get experience early since that is the key for us having a dominant Oline for the future.. questions about jones being big enough or strong enough to physically dominate as a RT will be answered early since he will have to prove he can do it, or he will ride the bench with the addition of ferguson.. as for the teague playing RT, i do not know much about him but i like the idea of having a quick Oline which is what jones provides us with...
Anyone know how much AJ is weighing these days? NFL.com has him as 6-4 296. If he wants to play RT he will need to bulk up which hopefully he has been doing this offseason.
I think our OL will be: D'Brick - Kendall - Mangold - Moore - Jones Kendall would be our veteran presence, and this lineup would make our OL young and athletic. I see us running alot of schemes that involve pulling and speed. We will most likely hit some bumps in the road because of the inexperience, but I think we should develop our young talent and allow them to form a solid chemistry that will last for the next 5+ years. Having Teague and Clements as depth is also a very positive thing. I just can't see the new coaching staff benching Jones, a young up and comer, over an aging Teague.
Pennington better be healthy because this line can't run block. It's undersized even more than the 2004 O-line. When Martin won the NFL rushing title in 2004 he ran behind one of the best run blocking lines in the NFL. Fabini, Kendall, Mawae, Moore, MCKenzie and Becht were terrific as Martin's NFL title testifies to. Fabini, Mawae, McKenzie and Becht are gone from that team. None of the projected starters weigh over 300 lbs. Ferguson is listed at 312 but he never played over 300 only reaching 300 lbs after a crash diet before the combine. Ferguson and Mangold were both suspect run blockers in college either. Jets offense is going to have to rely on pass blocking and a healthy Pennington to make any noise at all.
Beginning of Season LT: D'Brickashaw Ferguson LG: Pete Kendall C: Trey Teague RG: Brandon Moore RT: Adrian Jones Midway Through RT: D'Brickashaw Ferguson RG: Pete Kendall (will make the calls for first few games) C: Nick Mangold LG: Brandon Moore LT: Adrian Jones
Oh, good lord, DON'T let Kendall call the blocking assignments! Kendall is a fine LG, but.... he didn't know who he was supposed to block last year at C. Mangold is a very smart kid. He won't start until he's ready to be an NFL center, and that means calling the blocking assignments. The nice thing is we have Teague to handle it until Mangold is ready. They got Teague as much for his experience in calling blocking assignments.... they saw how bad Kendall was at it. I still see a chance that Mangold could get some playing time at RG. That doesnt mean he puts Moore on the bench though. Clements..... if this guy steps on the field, triple the QB injury insurance policy. He remains the ONLY signing I really hate by the new braintrust. He couldn't start on the only O line in the NFL that was worse than the Jets last year. Jones has some time to prepare for playing RT this year. I've heard he's bulked up about 8 pounds. jensen as usual, has no clue what he's talking about. The year Martin won the rushing title, the Jets didn't have any kind of strong point of attack run blockers either. They were fast and athletic, very much like this group, and their strength was in pulling and blocking in space. It's been a loooooong time since the Jets could move the pile in short yardage, and it will remain so, but that does not mean the running game can't be effective.
1.How can anyone POSSIBLY consider losing Jason Fabini a BAD thing. He had his moments for us, but he was nothing more than liability last season. The fact that we replaced him w/ one of the best OT prospects to come out in the last few years shouldnt be considered anything but a positive thing. 2. Ferguson played (and dominated) at the senior bowl at 305 lbs and added 7 quality lbs to his frame. Run blocking is not his strength, but he IS indeed over 300 lbs and has the frame to add even more weight 3. Mangold was a very solid run blocker in college and he weighs in at exactly 300 lbs. I think your "We don't have any linemen over 300 mlbs" arguement is thrown out the window 4. The Broncos Falcons and Chiefs have all been very successful w/ lines that stress agility over size. It looks as though we are headed in the same direction. There's a chance this line COULD struggle w/ run blocking..but basing sucha inference strictly on weight is ridiculous.
Keep drinking that Mangini Kool Aid. I have no clue? Facts seem to fly right by you. In 2004 the Jets had the 3rd best total rushing offense in the NFL. The run blocking line the entire year was Fabini, Kendall, Mawae, Moore, McKenzie and Becht. http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/OFF-RUSHING/2004/regular In 2005 after losing four sixths of their run blocking unit, they finished 31st in total rushing offense. http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/OFF-RUSHING/2005/regular Fabini, Mawae, McKenzie and Becht haven't been replaced. Well. you can always blame Herman Edwards, in fact, you probably will.
Sure, and we'll never have a line as good as the one from 2 years ago right? Ferguson and Mangold are nothing more than below average mid rounders w/ little to no potential. Hell, You KNOW we are hopeless as niether of them nor any of the other OL are over 300 lbs.Don't listen to the draft reports, or the scale at the NFL combine..they are 285 lbs at best. And Just ask the Broncos, Chiefs and Falcons how important having guys up front over 300 lbs truly is! Lets face it, when Herm, a former DB coach, left the jets, any hope for our O-line left as well.
You're absolutely right. The number of players over 300 lbs is not a good predictor of how effective a OL will be at run blocking. I think Ferguson and Mangold will be fine (in time), I'm more concerned whether AJ will be effective at RT and whether we have a solid blocking TE on the roster. These were two positions we were sorely lacking in last year.
Well.. Rjansen. Hopefully, Reality is somewhere in between your disaster scenario and "Could develop to be a very good OL".... Personally, I can see this OL developing into a good group.. And HEY, it's a work in progress... Year 1... Who knows. maybe they go after a top RT next year in FA or the draft.... Maybe draft a guard? I wasn't 100% for the Ferguson pick but, hey, a lot of people say he's a great prospect... whatever. We'll see. Plus Mangold. But, you know in today's NFL you lose players and you have to constantly replace them... Fabini went down hill, And Mckenzie was paid a bunch. So. YES, if the OL was depleted it's Bradways fault at this point..... Keeping Mawae was debateable.... Sounds like they targeted Mangold a long time ago. It's year 1 in a rebuild with a new OL.... Expect bumps But, a hopeful progression and no injuries!!!!!
