reports saying the jets think Mangold will play out his last year of his rookie contract and then the jets will tag him...D'brick and jets closer to deal then expected... http://mobile.newsday.com/inf/infom..._5min&feed:c=jets&feed:i=1.2029240&nopaging=1
best line: "So despite yesterday's détente, Revis still isn't convinced the Jets are showing loyalty. Funny, but how is a team not showing loyalty by going to a player with three years left on his contract, and then offering him a deal worth more money than most athletes will see in a lifetime? If that's not loyalty, then what is?"
if Mangold gets the tag...it doesn't necessarily mean he won't be offered a long term contract. Besides....the new CBA may dictate new guidelines regarding franchise tags. Mangold's future is a tad fuzzy at the moment......but having said that...i can't see Tanny letting him go or trading him in a year either.....
I wonder what kind of numbers D'Brick will command. He's certainly not the best LT in the league, but he's getting up there and is probably top 5.
Yeah, I'm borrowing that. The one thing I hate most about these negotiations is the "Jets are disloyal" nonsense.
He's gonna get paid....LT is a premium position in this league. Comparable examples: Joe Thomas (Browns) - 6 year, 43 million dollar contract (23 million guaranteed) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Thomas_(American_football Jake Long (Phins) - 5 year, 57.5 million dollar contract (30 million guaranteed) http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d807e7335&template=with-video&confirm=true
Left tackle is more important than center. I want to see Mangold re-signed as well, but Ferguson is the more important player.
Normally you would be right but Mangold is the best center in the entire league. With Vince Wilfork in our division, Mangold is the guy we need to keep.
Both will end up here long term. Revis is gonna get the highest contract, Brick will get the next largest, then after setting the bar with Brick's deal negotiations with Mangold can actually have some type of progress.
I'm hoping we get a Mangold deal done because I'd rather not use the franchise tag on him (would rather use it on a guy we traded for in the last year of their contract i.e Holmes, Edwards or Cro) Obviously if push comes to shove Mangold needs to be here so if the tag is what it takes than so be it.
Left tackle is the more important position. I don't care who's playing nose tackle for the other team. Ferguson has some of the best feet in the league. He's quick enough to seal off the edge and keep athletic 3-4 rushers away from Sanchez. Nick Mangold is a very important player in this offense. I know that, but protecting a quarterback's blindside is far more important than run blocking. I'm not worried about any of this, because they'll both be here for a long time.
Agreed 100%. I'd be sick if we ever lost Mangold (although I don't see that as a likely scenario), but a Pro-Bowl caliber LT is more valuable than a Pro-Bowl center, even the best one in football. I have a feeling Tanny will work his magic eventually.
Exactly. Throughout the whole mess of negotiations, the one thing as Jets fans we can be assured of is that Tannenbaum has consistently proven to be one of the best in the NFL of working the cap. He'll be able to find a way to secure our players without handcuffing the franchise.
It strikes me as a bit odd that D'Brick would be the first of the 4 to be locked up long term. I understand how important his position is, but he already has a lucrative rookie deal in place through 2012. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the new deal will be more cap friendly in 2011 and 2012 to make room for the other contracts. A part of it could also be Tanny sending a message - be quiet, work hard, and you'll be rewarded.
I don't like the attitude that the Jets aren't being loyal to other people, Revis will get his money but the Jets need to tread lightly as who knows what the new CBA will do to handcuff us in the future. I still feel like Harris will be the odd man out when all is said and done.
Part of the idea here is that Ferguson is slowly becoming 1 of the better LTs in the league -- but at the same time, he might not currently be in the "premier" group. So lock him up long term before he gets there & starts making demands to be the highest paid LT in the league ---- Revis & Mangold are already there.
Mangold is too important if for nothing else his Chemistry with Sanchez. Mangold was calling the protection last year, that is a beautiful thing for a young QB to have in his back pocket. Not only that but he does a hell of a job blocking too, they are both important but in this case Mangold takes a higher priority. At least to me-
