Could the Secondary Get Sharper ? Maybe Not in the Way You Think … April 29th, 2010 - by Bassett > http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/04/29/could-the-secondary-get-sharper-probably-not/
Speaking of safeties, the Rams just traded for one from the Bears. There's still a chance Atogwe becomes available after June 1st, as it seems more likely that the Rams are going to let him walk.
Just heard about this guy for the first time a couple of months ago. I watched his highlights and damn is this guy is impressive. He does not like to go down when he has the football, he is pretty fast for a Free Safety and makes every attempt to avoid a defender after an interception. This guy would be the finishing touch to the defense. edit: Just watched some more video on O.J and it seems to me that this guy is a heavy hitter who forces alot of turnovers.
The Jets would need to get in line with the other HALF of the NFL who would also be interested in Atogwe. Considering the rules for top8 teams, would the Jets even be eligible to offer Atogwe anything more than a mediocre salary? Half of the NFL is probably watching the situation with a lot more money to spend than the Jets can. Just sayin'.
Which HALF of the NFL teams have more money to spend than the Jets? I would be very interested in finding out. Jets arguably are one of the biggest spenders, a group that includes Cowboys and Redskins. Tanny is a very smart GM and he can come up with a salary structure that will suit our budget. $6-7 millions is not huge for the Jets. We saved about atleast $15 mil in releasing faneca, TJ, Shephard and trading away Kerry and picked up a few new players, all totalling well below $10 mil. Its not about the money. With the Jets, its about the need.

Do you really think the Jets are the only team interested in him? And futhermore, you act like the Jets would be DUMB enough to just throw money around. I mean, you mention paying the guy $6.7 million. What do you think you are gonna get him on a 1 year rental? His whole issue with the Rams is he wants a long term deal... something comparable to what A. Rolle (overpaid) got with the Giants. If you are implying you can get a superstar safety for one year you are out of your mind. Maybe the Jets are in the running, but I can promise you there is a handful of other teams who will be calling for his services, and any team that does call, better be reading to offer a 5 year deal worth $35 million or something around that figure.
I never disagreed with you on there. No, I didn't say that either. I only said there might be 4 or 5 teams that are bigger spenders than Woody. And no, I didn't say a one year contract of $6-7 mils. I guess I wasn't clear enough though. I meant a multiple year contract ranging between $6-7 mil a year. U suggested 5 years $35 mils, same as me.
