Faneca unhappy with Jets' decision EmailPrintComments 0 Share retweet1 By Rich Cimini ESPNNewYork.com Archive When Alan Faneca signed with the New York Jets two years ago, he figured it would be the ideal place to finish his career -- a career that might land him in the Hall of Fame someday. On Friday night, Day 2 of the NFL draft, the former Jets guard received a phone call from coach Rex Ryan, and everything changed. Faneca, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, was fired. Commenting for the first time since his release, Faneca expressed mixed emotions about his departure, but he did say he was "upset" with the Jets' decision to let a couple of unproven players battle for his former job. Jets blog Looking for more information on the green and white? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog "I'm not sure what I am," Faneca said Sunday afternoon in an e-mail to ESPNNewYork.com. "I'm not necessarily angry, but I did not want things to end the way they did. I'm upset with their decision. I think they made the decision that they felt was for the future of the team. "That's fine, this is a business, but everyone wants to leave on their own terms. I'll move on and find another opportunity to play. My family and I had a great time being part of the Jets and the community and will always look at our time here and the friends we made as a great time in our lives." Faneca, 33, didn't say where he might end up, but he figures to attract interest. The Jets owe him $5.25 million, so he probably will sign somewhere for the veterans minimum -- a bargain for a team looking for an accomplished former Super Bowl champion. "We did a lot of great things last year on the field," Faneca said. "I guess the phrase, 'If it ain't broke, then don't fix it' doesn't apply here. I think they put a lot of faith in Cally [offensive line coach Bill Callahan], as do I. He is a great coach that they feel he can get the job done." The Jets' offensive line was arguably the best in the league last season, as the Jets led the NFL in rushing. Faneca, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore and Damien Woody started 32 consecutive games together, the longest streak in the NFL. It'll be a two-man battle for Faneca's job between second-year backup Matt Slauson (no NFL starts) and second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse. Rich Cimini covers the Jets for ESPNNewYork.com. I'm pretty sure they offered him to stay at a reduced contract... question is for how much. Anyways I'm confident in Ducasse and even more in Slauson...
Alan's right. We should have waited until we broke our new quarterback before fixing the offensive line.
This is probably the only questionable move this entire offseason. I was less upset with the Jones departure only because I know LT gives Mark a better check down option although there's a drop off in locker room presence. Same team chemistry issue with releasing Faneca and he was an excellent run blocker - I am fully aware of the 7 sacks he gave up...
I noticed Cimini left out the horrid pass blocking on the team that threw the least last season and the fact that Rex wants to give Sanchez more passing attempts...
I'm a big fan of Faneca, and while he was declining in pass protection he is still a masher run blocker. It won't take him long to find a new job.
The 2010 season will let us know whether or not this was a mistake. We probably won't lead the league in rushing, but that won't necessarily mean the Faneca move can be considered a failure. If we end up top 5 rushing and top 10 passing, I'll be happy with the move. If we end up middle of the road rushing and still middle of the road passing, I'll be annoyed.
Not really. 75% of the time it was his holes that were collapsing before Thomas Jones got to them. If Faneca was at his peak than Jones might have reached 1,500 yards.
From everything I've read and heard LT is even a better locker room presence/vet leader than Jones was. The Faneca deal comes down to $$ and the fact he was declining especially in pass blocking , if you look at our expiring contracts next year - Tanny had to bite the bullet on some vets now .
I think LT's and Thomas Jones personalities are different from each other when it comes to leadership. LT is Mr. nice guy and TJ was more of a angry leader
