The Jets are thin at RB. The problem is not the 5-8 carries a game that LT would get as a back up while Greene shoulders the load with 20+ carries a game. The problem is what happens if Greene gets hurt. LT is no longer a capable starting RB in the NFL. He couldn't do it last year in SD when they had no other option and he won't be able to do it here. Great OL or not, he has lost a step or two and can't hit the hole anymore. If Greene goes down, 3.5 yards per carry is not going to cut it in a running offense.
It did for the 1990 Giants. O.J. Anderson- 225 attempts, 3.5 average I have always contended that Anderson was highly effective even though his rushing average was subpar (it was a power running attack, ball control was key, Anderson fumbled only one time, blah blah blah). The league average that year was 4.1 and the Super Bowl champions averaged 3.8 yards per rushing attempt.
Only occurrence of what? League champion with a below average rushing average number or leading rusher on league champion with subpar numbers? I can present more examples if needed.
Someone needs to put together a TJ highlight reel where he continually runs into the backs of offensive linemen. People need to quit with the bellyaching about this, he's gone. He did well when he was here, and he starting to break down. Signing LT not only adds depth at the position, but it also adds a great nose for the endzone. Like him or not, he still finds his way in to score. His receiving out of the backfield is still excellent. If Leon comes back like the Leon of old, having both of these guys on the field on 3rd down could be a nightmare for the opposing squad. Especially in mid-range situations. For those who don't like that...Keep in mind, from a business stand point, he's cheaper than TJ. No one knows if they really were offered a matching sheet for TJ, so you have to assume 6 mil is a lot more than a 2.5-2.8 range. Put the candles out boys, he's gone and it's time to move on.
Yes. 3.4 for them but the league average was 4.2. The 4-12 last place Chargers with Tomlinson were at 5.1 and led the league!
In the red zone anyways. You probably won't see him busting anything larger than a 20 yard run anymore. It was a 5.3 avg actually. What's even more impressive is that we had 13 different guys start on the offensive line that year. He was also our main receiver with 100 receptions, lol
Re: The LaDainian Tomlinson Thread [Status: Back to California without a deal] So, you're suggesting running in SD and running here are the same thing? By all means, since we're thin at RB, we're all waiting to hear what our better options were.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/weblogs/bolts-blog/2010/mar/14/signs-point-new-york/ According to this, LT gonna be a Jet. Citing three people with knowledge of the situation, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that free agent LaDainian Tomlinson will sign with the Jets. The Union-Trib's Kevin Acee admits he hasn't confirmed the report "beyond a shadow of a doubt" yet, but it's expected that LT will announce his new team late Sunday or on Monday. The run-first Jets can offer more carries than the Vikings, and may be willing to pay LT more to complement Shonn Greene. Mar. 14 - 1:40 pm et Rotoworld
No, it was 5.1. I wrote, "The 4-12 last place Chargers with Tomlinson were at 5.1 and led the league!" I could have written it in this fashion: "The 4-12 last place Chargers (with Tomlinson) were at 5.1 and led the league!" The team averaged 5.1 yards per carry which is what I was trying to convey. Tomlinson averaged 5.3 yards per carry.
Re: The LaDainian Tomlinson Thread [Status: Back to California without a deal] Signonsandiego IS the Union Tribune  I'm glad to see the news spreading, but I won't feel good about it until Schefter or Glazer confirms it.
Remember all those future All-Pros, Pro Bowlers, and other worthwhile players that the Chargers added as rookies in 2004? Philip Rivers Igor Olshansky Nate Kaeding Nick Hardwick Shaun Phillips Michael Turner Shane Olivea Malcom Floyd Ruvell Martin Wes Welker Amazing that SD never found its way to a Super Bowl in this era.
Oh I see. Yea our other guys that year were Jesse Chatman - 8 att, 17 yards, 2.1 avg Leon Johnson - 4 att, 26 yards, 6.5 avg Other teams had to put 8 guys in the box, and they still couldn't stop Tomlinson. We also switched back and forth between Drew Brees and Doug Flutie at QB 2006 was our best chance but Marty Schotenheimer decided we should go away from Tomlinson in the 2nd half of the patriots game. LT had 23 att, 123 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 receptions for 64 yards. And we had stupid penalties (a headbutt). And a interception that would have won the game if McCree went down, instead he fumbled it and gave it right back, and the Patriots scored.
