I'd take LT in a heart beat. If he's willing to mentor Greene and Washington, he's worth the money even if he doesn't have the same legs he used to.
I keep hearing this line being trotted out, but is there any individual here who can honestly say that signing LT (or indeed any single individual player) would make the difference to their decision as to whether to stump up between $4K and £20K? The key factor in the decision is surely the standard of football you expect the team to produce, and it seems that as many people think that it will be worse with LT than it would be with TJ, so if what you say is true then it's a fairly stupid idea from the Jets' FO dontcha think?
Even if you had stopped with the bolded part, you'd be wrong. There are not plural hundreds of running backs in the NFL period. As far as needing him to be LT, we're bringing him in as a solid backup. He's not coming here to start, so the expectations are a little different than what you're anticipating.
Not to mention the fact that you'd end up buying PSLs for a term much longer than LT's tenure with the team. I get the idea that a lot of posters think the average STH is a moron for some reason.
Are people trying to say we want to sign LT and got rid of TJ to get PSL's sold? Is this a joke or for real? And since when was TJ so loved? Is this gonna be full of year of TJ apoligists like we had with noodle arm?
I think you just painted a very real, very frightening vision of the future. Time to stock up on water and canned food; the bunker may get crowded this season.
First of all, there are only five players who had as many carries as Tomlinson through the age of 30. Emmitt Smith- 3243 Barry Sanders- 3062 Walter Payton- 3047 Edgerrin James- 2982 Curtis Martin- 2927 Tomlinson has 2880 career rushing attempts. Small sample size is a major problem here. Three of those players had at least one more very productive season. You can argue when Smith began to decline, but if we make this as simple as possible we could say it was the 2003 season with Arizona. That was the first (and only) season in which he gained fewer than 900 rushing yards. He rebounded to run for 937 yards for a crappy Arizona team in 2004. Sanders retired before the season in which he turned 31 years of age, so he's out of the discussion. While you could say Payton was not great in 1975, 1981, and 1982, his first clearly average season came in 1987 when he was 33 years old. He retired after that season. James did fall apart after the age of 30. Just see what he did for Seattle this past season. Once again, many had thought Martin was done after the 2003 season. At the age of 31 in 2004, he led the league in rushing.
Tomlinson will likely get about 10 carries a game if we get him. It's not like we'd be relying on him carrying the load. Why don't people get this?
Great post. Thanks for compiling the stats. Just to add, Smith was, what, 34 when we went to Arizona? He was productive for 12 seasons in Dallas, well beyond the number of carries LT has. Sanders retired at 31, but I doubt you'll find a single person who will argue that he wasn't still in his prime. Nearly 1500 yards at the age of 30. If Detroit stood a chance at winning a championship, I think we'd have seen him stick it out very productively for a few more seasons. The biggest thing is that every single one of those backs was considered a starter at 30. LT is coming here in a complementary role, which he's more than capable of filling.
Well as far as Emmitt Smith goes, he was more of a smart runner, finding holes and lanes, and being somewhat more of a pounder. What made LT so good was his jump cut and his break away speed, and he doesn't have either anymore. Barry Sanders was also so good because of his footwork, and as far as I know he didn't have the injury problems that LT did. Payton was also a bigger/pound it out back. LT goes down on first contact/arm tackles now. If the jets o-line can open up holes up the middle, and he can just use his straight ahead speed, he should do alright. Marty1090 LT has moved up his golf tournament from April 30th to April 25th in order to be available for mini-camp Not sure why that's important. Anyone know when jets mini-camp starts?
Rich Cimini reports that the Jets are still in talks with Tomlinson's agent even though he's back in San Diego. May mean nothing since I'm sure the Vikings are also talking to him.
^ That's all old news, though. Just a summary of his blog. We're just waiting for confirmation on "Marty1080".
No, but the one last night did. RichMiano works in radio, and he seems convinced she knows what she says she does.
Yeah I remember her tweet from yesterday. When I consider all the facts of his visits and what both teams have to offer, I'd be shocked if she wasn't right.
Since when do RBs need mentors????I'm sorry, but it is not a "thinking man's" position. Success is based on quickness and instinct. Young RBs can be mentored by RB coaches. If you want a mentor, bring back Curtis Martin as a coach for TC.
