The past two seasons I simply haven't had the time to watch enough college football to form solid opinions on anybody except for only a handful of players, so that's why I don't post in these parts much anymore. Mays is one of the players I haven't seen very much. You wrote that his stock has dropped. You also wrote that he didn't make big plays and is poor in coverage. The thing that makes no sense to me with all that is how Mays' stock was ever high in the first place. How was the guy ever rated highly to begin with if he's poor in coverage and can't make big plays?
Anyone else really, really like Morgan Burnett? Dude is a baller and would be a nice pick in the 2nd.
First of all... No Taylor Mays. I think this team has an adequate group of safeties with Leonhard/Smith starting and Lowery/Ihedigbo as reserves. IMO it's not worth trading up for one, especially with only a few picks this year. If a great value falls, then I'd take a safety in the first. But I don't see who that would be since there's no way Berry gets past the top 10 or so. Otherwise, WR, DE, OLB are much bigger needs and should be addressed first.
We all hated Eric Smith a year ago. I'm really surprised that some people would be ok with him starting.
I'm a fan of his, would be that ballhawk safety that Rex loves. Huge safety with terrific speed that was rated highly out of HS going to a team like USC. A lot of times with guys like this it takes until their Junior or even Senior year before people realize that they actually aren't very good. It's the curse of a lot of people doing rankings for players so early on in their careers, before the majority of the guys have taken on real roles. With his skill set he COULD have been a dominant player, but that never materialized.
You know, this really is all DeAndre McDaniel's fault. If he hadn't decided to be so SELFISH the Jets would be sitting pretty right now. They could have taken him at #29, but NOOOO.... he had to go and return to school to get his EDUCATION. What BS...
Is it so impossible that he could have improved? He played well against some weak teams in a starting role, maybe he can build on that.
We have other needs too besides Safety depth, so I'm not sure why everyone is assuming we're going S at #29.
I like LSU S Chad Jones though I don't think he'll be available for our 4th (or our 2nd/#61 for that matter). For mid- to later rounds, maybe a Myron Rolle or VT's Kam Chancellor (though the more I read about his problems in man coverage the more that I don't think he'd be a good fit here).
Im glad somebody said it one white starter is enough (no racist) lol maybe next year, we can only pray and hope Thomas falls somewhere reachable for us to pick him up
If Mays came out last year, he probably would have been drafted around 8-15 in Rd 1. As the 2009 season progressed, it be came very clear Mays had issues in coverage and made zero big plays. Mays should have declared last year.
So please, tell me the correct way evaluate players. Because obviously watching film of how they play isn't it.
Poor Coverage skills being his weekness only makes him a perfect fit for this team. Revis completely shutting down one receiver and Cromartie probably doing a very good job on the other, means he doesn't have to diagnose plays as much. Is he an all-around great saftey no.... but he does have a very good skill set. Playing the run, and laying the pipe on anyone coming across the middle. Perhaps trading up isn't a great idea to get him but if he is there at 29 i would have no qualms picking him. its not just about a players skills but how the player fits in with a team and he his skill set fits in best with any other secondary in the league, the complimentary players will hide his weaknesses and show his strengths.
