With Rex wanting to give the kid more playing time, what will it take to not be labeled a "Bust"?

At this point him becoming good enough to start would satisfy me.

Please do not simply bash Gholston. I truly want fellow fans opinions on how he would "HAVE TO" preform not how he has.

Him becoming a mediocre pass rusher is all it would take for people to see him as not a complete waste.

If this guy can get 6-8 sacks a season and at least put some pressure on a QB most people would be relatively satisfied with him.

For Gholston to shed the bust label he's going to have to turn into a very good player next year. This is not Bryan Thomas taken in the second half of the first round, Gholston went on the 6.

Right now he's down two seasons in the count. He didn't come out playing and gradually improving like D'Brick until he's gotten to the place he needs to be. He's busted so far. He needs to figure that out and get on the field and make impact plays. He's playing for the perfect coach to make that happen, there are no excuses if you're soft in a Rex Ryan defense because the defense is not soft at all.

That is what he would have to do. Gholston is a phenomenal athlete but he is a terrible football player. He has no IQ for the sport and, seemingly, no aggression.

I am not going to look for an arbitrary statistical benchmark to judge his progress because if I give a low number there are going to be arguments that he is still a bust because most players should be able to put up those numbers. If I pick a high number and he fails to achieve it then it is going to skew and undercut any development he may have made.

I would much rather him start to recognize plays, react to a run without hesitation, make an aggressive move toward the QB instead of just bull-rushing the OLine without any effort to disengage and not be the last guy to a tackling pile, holding his hips while displaying the back of a pristine jersey.

In short: become a football player.

Bust is a term that is applied based on where the guy was drafted. Even if he turns out to be a serviceable player who gets 5-7 sacks a season and provides decent push in the pocket once in a while, he could be considered a bust based on his salary and draft position. He was drafted with the expectation of being a game-changing, passrushing machine who gets double-digit sacks annually and demands double-teaming regularly.

With that being said, I'd be happy if we got anything out of the motherfucker. 5-7 sacks would be fine by me, but he'd still be a bust based on where he was picked.

Shit, I'll take 1 sack to be happy since its 100% more than he has

Even though it is sickening to see that 0 in the sack column for ghost.. I would rather see him translate his physical ability into football talent more than anything..

Using his speed and strength to be a consistent pass rusher and always getting through blocks and getting to the qb.. not necessarily a sack.. but as long as he is providing constant pressure, that is what I want to see..

and I am really happy he is getting another shot.. most likely his last, but another shot none the less, I really hope this kid can play football for us this season and play like the top OLB we drafted him to be..

if he somehow got his shit together, we would be bringing in two first round talents this season, and truthfully im hoping they are both on the defensive side of the ball..

but getting back to the topic, as long as he becomes relevant I'll be happy..

5-9 sacks with 50 tackles is a solid season for a 3-4 OLB. Not what you'd expect from a #6 pick but a good player and somebody who's probably essential in winning a championship

Is he a liability? If he is completely missing assignments to the extent that plays are getting blown up, I'd rather see him go. If on the other hand he is getting close within the scheme, then I'm all for continuing to work him into a solid player. This is especially due to the fact that we have so much invested in him. There must be some examples of players that have started off really slow only to blossom in year three... right?

I also think that if he had started his career under Rex and Mike P. we'd be seeing a different player right now. One more chance.

like someone else said: he has to be good enough to start. I don't care about numbers, as long as Rex thinks he's helping the D. And frankly, I saw plenty of times when he was out there that he was helping the D.

I'm sick of Gholston honestly. He will not be good next year no matter how well he is coached. He doesn't want to be a football player and he shows no desire. Have you guys read anything that he's ever said about his performance? After all the negative press and people calling him a bust, you'd think he would be pissed off. But, no hes fine with it. He's usually like oh well, I'm just doing my thing on special teams...he will never be good until he totally changes his mindset.

I was somebody who has always hated on Bryan Thomas but as he has gotten older I have started to like him alot more because he does show flashes of being very good but he is also a solid player. In order for Ghost to lose that tag he'd need to perform at least to the level of Thomas.

The "light bulb" hasn't come on for Gholston yet....in 2 seasons. I HIGHLY doubt it's going to happen at all. Get rid of him.
