I don't know how I feel about this. Now it is an absolute necessity that Leon comes back next year.

I hope we stay away from. Tomlinson

Can't believe how excited some of you are that one of the Best RB's in the NFL over the past 4 years is leaving...

    WOW.

The thinking is that he picked up his yardage because he carried so many times, not because he got a lot of yards/carry. He was second in the league in number of carries, 3rd in yardage, but 28th in yards per carry. Why not replace him with someone who can squeeze more yards out of each carry?

He is also getting older and the front office doesn't want to keep him long enough to find out when his downswing starts. Kind of like stock trading. You want to sell before it's value starts to decline, not after.

To me, the only reasons to keep him is that he did manage to stay on the field and keep running, and he also was reliable to hold on to the ball. But in the NFL, anyone can go down at any time.

TJ is a 32 year old RB who clearly was wearing down at the end of last season. He did nothing the last 5 games(injured?). I appreciate what he did as a Jet but I think it's time to move on.

Do you guys really want him taking away carries from Greene or Leon? I think TJ had something to do with this. He wants to play. The Jets could not give him that opportunity. He would have been a backup. I would put him as the 3rd string. Greene and Leon are perfect compliments as change of pace.

You remember Shaun Phillips in the playoffs? "23 in the game, 23 in the game, WRAP UP!" When TJ is in the game you don't need to wrap up. He goes down on 1st contact. He also doesn't have game breaking speed. He's the least productive of our 2 younger and fresher RB's. He wasn't going to get many carries. Thats unfair to him too.

As far as I can tell, wasting your time still cost me nothing; I'm going to continue to post. That 'e-2x4' being stuck up you 'inbox', is your problem, not mine.

    Cookie Monster,

I never rag on you at all. I wasn't ragging on anyone. I was saying the article said nothing new, the article was a fluff piece. I tried to keep that clear in the last line of that post, but I guess stressing the article says nothing we didn't already know was not enough. Not sure how else I could of phrased it so you wouldn't have taken offense.

I'm pretty sure Ryan has been quoted numerous times saying that they aren't going to run the ball as much next year, unless need be.

With our line any RB will be effective...just like Denver a couple years ago...

I would not go that far in comparing our OLine. We are going to need fast players with good vision. The holes that collapsed for Jones were pretty telling of the age on our OLine as much as they were for Jones' legs. This OLine definitely needs some new blood within the next couple of seasons.

    This.

Leon better be coming back then. Greene can't do it on his own.

The current trend with RBs in this league seems to be that no HB can do it on their own anymore. Tannenbaum will definitely look at bringing in another HB, unless the Jets think that Chauncey Washington is an answer.

Right now I would not be surprised if Tannebaum pulls a trade to grab another HB or 2nd or 3rd round pick. Gerhart or Blount could wind up on this team. If Leon is signed away, I would expect Dexter McClouster to get a few looks from the Jets' FO. Not as solidly built as Leon but incredibly versatile like Leon - passing game, scat back, returner.

Do you guys think it's possible we release TJ and resign him later on down the road for a better price... Assuming no one picks him up

Personally I think he goes to San Diego

It could happen but I would not be in favor of the move. I think that he gets a better offer from another team with more playing time.

I wonder how many teams in his league would sign TJ as their starting RB... because that's the money he wants.

If he was smart he'd have re-worked his contract to stay with the Jets IMO. But then again it only takes one team to get over-paid, like coles did last year with the Bengals...

Probably none to be a starter but someone in the league likely has a #2 spot where he would only have one other HB to split the carries with.

This is definitely better for the team in the long run.

Amen. Mr. Electric Cartman has spoken. Respect his authoritah, you goddam hippie. Although the existence of another thread regarding Jones was referenced herein, this one is the first I've seen in connection with the news of his release.

He averaged 4.2 YPC which is really good. I haven't looked up the rankings but I doubt he was 28th among feature backs. It's easy to come in for a couple of carries a game fresh where one carry can affect your YPC significantly but he was carrying the load and had a good YPC. he wasn't healthy late in the yera and in postseason. he's also the emotional leader of the team and a guy his teammates respect immensely.

That's what they said aboit Chicago when he left there- they still haevn't replaced him long term(forte had one good year) and they still haven't seen a playoff game since he left.

Yds/Att for RBs with more than 250 carries

    Code:
Player Team	Att	Yds	Y/A	TD
    Chris Johnson	TEN	358	2006	5.6	14
    Ray Rice BAL	254	1339	5.27	7
    Maurice Jones-Drew	JAX	312	1391	4.46	15
    Ryan Grant	GNB	282	1253	4.44	11
    Adrian Peterson	MIN	314	1383	4.4	18
    Steven Jackson	STL	324	1416	4.37	4
    Thomas Jones	NYJ	331	1402	4.24	14
    Cedric Benson	CIN	301	1251	4.16	6
    Matt Forte	CHI	258	929	3.6	4
There isn't much of a drop off from Jones-Drew to Thomas Jones

This development shouldn't really come as much of a surprise to many people. We knew last week that the Jets wanted TJ to restructure. That should have made it clear that they weren't going to pick his bonus up.

TJ has been dependable, durable and a good lockerroom leader, but the amount of carries he has accumulated over the past 6 seasons is only comparable to maybe 1 player - Steven Jackson - and Jackson has been in the league 4 less seasons with TJ. That's a lot of wear and tear, and it's going to hithim hard eventually.

If he tests the FA waters and then comes back as a platoon back for the Jets, I'd welcome him with open arms. But I think the Jets are playing the odds well in this situation. He's not going to be able to carry the ball 300 times and still be effective for much longer, possibly anymore.
