Article XXIV, Section 8, Subsection b: Ok, so it looks like Tannebaum can give him the increase but it is going to involve a shitload of guaranteed money. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth it to lock up Revis.
This makes sense. The 30% rule keeps us from raising a player's total "cap" money, salary and bonuses, more than 30% over the previous year if that player is still under contract. This means Mangold, Harris, and Brick are SOL. As should Revis be. I love the guy and want him around forever, but there is just no good reason to do this as he is restricted by the 30% rule. This will be Leon's first year as a RFA as he signed a four year contract in July 2006. It will only take about $3 million to give him a first and third round tender, the highest. He is easily worth that even with the injury so it is win-win with him. Low salary or high compensation. I would imagine we would do the same for Braylon. One year tryouts. Even if we did want to do the whole front-loaded contract deal, we would be restricted to a 50% decrease in the following year's cap numbers. This is only viable for players whose contracts have expired, nobody comes to mind right now. The luck would be if one of the big three mentioned in the first paragraph were expiring this year, we could potentially give him $10 million in uncapped 2010 and still reduce it to $5 million in the following year. This sounds more than fair and could come into play. This allows some front-loading, but it is restricted. Now for the worst rule of all...I'm serious, sit down if you aren't already. The cap money acceleration present in the capped years for cut players IS NOT ALLOWED to happen in the uncapped year, rather the money will be spread out for the remaining years on the signed contract. This means we cannot just cut Gholston outright without ramifications. Its teh suck! Well, all of our nice ideas were fun while they lasted, but it seems that even in the absence of a CBA, the powers that be accounted for the Snyder effect and nipped it in the proverbial bud before it could happen. One point that I'm not clear on is GUARANTEED BONUS MONEY. I have read some things that lead me to believe that there may be a loophole there, but I have to get back to my studies, so maybe someone else can find out? No runaway fun...it will be interesting nonetheless to see how this all plays out.
There is a restriction on that: It's not like Revis is playing under a 400k 4th round rookie salary. He was the second highest paid player this year at almost $8 million dollars, second only to the ridiculously overpaid Bart "D'Oh" Scott. He has a valid argument for more money, but we have more pressing needs and he really is getting paid plenty for a 3rd year player. He is only scheduled to hit for about $2 million next year though, so something may happen. I just hope he remembers the rest from this year. Players whose contracts that I feel DEFINITELY need to be addressed are in no particular order: Scott at $8.3 Mil, Faneca at $8.6 Mil, TJ at $7.4 Mil, and Sherry at $6.3 Mil. The only guy out of those four that I could make a reasonable argument for keeping is Fanny because our OL is e-l-i-t-e and I'd like to keep it that way. If life was fair, he'd have to split it with Mangold, but that's the nature of the game.
I love Revis to be locked up for the remainder of his career. However, nobody on here knows exactly how the uncapped year will be booked. You can not go out and lock up all the good young players without knowing the ramifications. Right now Revis last 2 years are voided, however the Jets can buy them back so he still has 3 years left. There is no rush whatsoever to do anything. The Jets can go out and give him all the $ he would require and then the NFL might escalate any bonus money in the uncapped year. Then they are fucked. The NFL is going to make sure that no team gets an unfair advantage salary wise. So lets hold our horses.
How will the NFL make sure no team gets an unfair advantage salary wise? An uncapped year is an uncapped year. The potential return of the cap is a concern but they would have to ease that back in, there's no way they could quickly re-implement a cap in a year. We will probably see a bunch of heavily front loaded contracts if 2010 is uncapped.
we all love revis, but i can actually see him being a huge dick when it comes to future contracts. 1- he held out for a ton, i mean a ton of cash coming out of college. 2- every interview he gives, he makes sure to mention the 'me' factor. 'Im always locked up 1/1 with the other teams best player'. he's not even subtle about it. 3- yes, he is quiet, he is polite, but he also thinks a ton of himself, as he should. 4- he's a mama's boy (not a bad thing) and comes from a large, close knit family with each family member expecting a new house, new car, and perks (i would tend to think). even if his fam does not expect perks, Revis expects to give them to them. wanting your due is not bad and i can see revis wanting every single penny of his. with the jets or with whomever.
The players union has already said if they go uncapped they won't bring back the salary cap. There's too much at stake. I can't see them starting 2010 w/o a new CBA in place.
You always have the franchise tag. As much as I would love Revis to end his career as a Jet and extend the contract, its far too early IMO. Revis isn't making a few hundred thousands a yr. He is still making $5mil a yr, which obviously is a bargain for us right now.
You got this all wrong! 1. Most high first rounders have held out. Its no surprise. 2. He doesn't beat around the bush and says it as it is. The guy was up for DPoY. 3. He shows his work on the field. He can think of himself all he wants. Nothing wrong about that. Humble? Way more than you think. 4. That is your opinion. Fortunately, NFL players don't get paid based on the size of their families.
Well put. The longer we wait and the closer he gets to hitting the open market, the more we will have to pay him.
I agree with this post. This will force the organization to consider just how valuable a CB is. While Revis is very good, we can improve our secondary by improving the Front 7 and therefore make him less of a necessity and more of a luxury. Since these twats put in a cap Revis will be a very big decision. I say keep him. I don't feel like watching a Champ Bailey-esque trade happen. I think I'd throw up if we let him go...It'd only get worse if it was for a RB. I don't even want to guess what his contract can be...
