Just finished watching the 1/2 hour clip on nyjets.com... let's see if I can sum everything up (in random order): - The QBs: Clemens will be tendered because he has a very good relationship with Mark and Tanny feels he was part of the reason of why Mark had the success he had at the end of the season. However they are willing to talk to teams and are prepared at the idea to let him go away under favorable (for the Jets) circumstances. He has fatih in Ainge and O'connell... got O'connell to be sure he had a QB he really liked on the roster if Clemens were to leave. It also said it gave him the "strong hand" when talking to teams who could inquire for Clemens. We might bring in a vet if we feel we need one. - TJ: He would really like him back, because he's been a big part of this team, and thinks he will be back... however he said there are some financial things that need to be talked about with TJ during this month. - Rhodes: He expects him back and wants him back... the problems are that he needs to talk to the coaches during this month because he hasn't been consistent enough this year and they want him to work on that. - Depth: The most important thing this off-season will be depth, especially on defense (but on offense too, it's just that the topic started by talking about the D). He said that's important because Rex really tailors his "inactive" list depending on the team they go against... so sometimes he'll activate 4 DL and 8 DBs and sometimes 6 DL and 6 DBs... to be able to do this he needs capable backup players on all the positions on D. When asked about Lito he said they hadn't made a decision on him but they were going to try and make the DB depth as better as they could during this off-season (this is how the whole depth argument started). He said he understood how important depth was from the impact GReene had during the season. It made him realize many many backups see the field durin the season. - The DBs: He said after one year working with Rex he understands how much importance he places on this part of the D... he said Rex loves small fast DBs way more then big strong DL. It's an area of the team that will be addressed since it's so important. - Leon & Braylon: Both will be tendered and durin the off-season if Leon is fine they'll try to talk to him about a longer deal. - Picking up guys from UFAs: Said the scouting dept has always done a great job in picking up guys like Marquice Cole and Mike DeVito (he chose those two as an example) and although this year there are some boundries for us in the UFA market we are still scheduled to try some guys out in the next months... guys that aren't UFAs but that got cut by their team. When asked about the restrictions on this non-cap year to the top 4 team he said as of know he interpreted it as for every UFA that goes out I can bring one in... he said he'd have to look deeper into that. They can make a move for RFAs, Trades and players that get cut by other teams. - Gholston sightings - Sanchez's knees Main topic of the presser so I mad a separate thread: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=54035 That's about it... if someone else listened to the presser and has something to add please do
I listened to it and you pretty much summed it all up, I have a feeling this offseason will be called "awful" to the average fan. But we will get some quality depth and future starters. Which is awesome to most of us.
Very true, glad Tanny is improving with his decision making, especially with the whole backup seeing the field during the season comment, this will be a good off-season, it's really going to have to depend on what players we draft (Hopefully - CB, LOLB, WR, OL) were going to need impact players to fill the secondary and possibly on the offensive side of the ball. We'll pick up fillers and guys that can contribute to both sides of the ball (Think DL/OL here) in the free agency As for the tenders, I really like the decision to tender Clemens, maybe some stupid team will trade a 6th or 7th rounder for him, I would take that, Braylon is going to stay (1 Year Tender?) for sure and we can sign Leon to a nice multi-year deal. As long as our core guys improve we should be in good shape, lets hope for the best! Go Get Em Tanny!
You know... I was looking at the depth chart and looking at the players I'd be happy to have back as backups. Let's say 22 starters + 3 ST = 25 so there are 53 - 25 = 28 backups on a team. Guys I like either because they are solid, they play good ST or the have potential: Greene (part-time starter), Leon (pt starter), Ainge (can be a #2 QB), Wright (solid ST guy), B. Smith (wild-cat), Clowney (potential), Hunter (all-round OL), Turner (solid G), Slauson (potential), Hartsock (solid), DeVito (love him), Pouha (very solid), Pitoitua (potential), Green (solid #3 NT), Westerman (ST + potential), Murrell (ST), Fowler (ST + starting experienceat ILB), Strickland (solid), Lowery (solid), Cole, Ihedigbo (ST), E. Smith (solid) that's 22 players... count in the third QB (I don't care who he is) and that makes it 23 out of 28 packups I'm happy if they make the final 53 next year Depth wise we are in a great position IMO After we solidify it this season we'll have a truly kick ass team!
He also talked about Gholston. He seemed to be stressing that it isn't a motivation issue, because he's showed up to all practices and workouts. Of course, merely showing up doesn't mean that he's trying very hard, but that's all Tanny had to offer. He made it seem like it was just that Gholston was progressing at a slower rate than other players, and the team still has hope in his ability.
Yea, he really didn't show any of the frustrations that the media and some fans have over his development. My guess is that this a result of seeing a guy like Bryan Thomas who took a lot of years to develop into a solid player; just like Gholston, Thomas had two great players starting over him for years, and dealt with a position switch. A lot of people could have given up on Thomas before Mangini got here and turned his career around, but they stuck with him, and he turned out alright. Gholston is a superior athlete, so even if it takes as long as it took Thomas for him to turn it on, it's worth giving him the benefit of a doubt for at least a little longer. (None of which means his situation won't get revisited the next time the Jets are worried about their cap status) I would've liked to hear him say more about TJ, because this is the sort of decision that makes his job difficult. Jones trains and conditions himself better than anybody, but with halfbacks above thirty, you're always gambling, no two ways about it. My guess is that both sides want him to stay a Jet for this year and beyond, but he'll have to sign a deal that accounts for the fact that Greene and Leon are just as big a part of the Jets backfield as he is, and they're going up while he's going down. I wouldn't be shocked to see them end up signing Jones to an extension for three years or so at decreasing salaries. He had nothing to say about financial restrictions placed on signing UFA players, so maybe that isn't as much of a factor as some of us have feared, or maybe he just hasn't turned his attention to it yet. His take was that its one in, one out, and as always, he's willing to look at any and all means of improving the team, including trades, RFA players and cuts. If anything, he'll be more constrained this year by having fewer chips to deal with, he's already light a few draft choices. It'll be interesting to see what moves he can make this year.
The more I keep hearing this the more I keep thinking that they already have a trade in place or the Jets brass is just trying to increase the demand for Rhodes. Anyone else get that feeling?
I know we still have a first, a second, a fifth, and a sixth. As for the seventh rounder, I have no idea. I don't think they have officially announced the ruling on that one. So four definitely, five maybe.
I think it's a win-win situation... either he humbles himself and starts working the way they want him to or they trade him. My opinion too is that he is a goner (maybe to the Giants, I hope not for Osi) but let's not turn this into another Rhodes thread :S
I don't really see that trade working out for either team. Assuming both play to the best of their abilities in their new systems, Osi still gives us another incomplete player on the weak side, and Rhodes is not the best at deep coverage or run support. He's a good blitzer and can cover man-to-man but the Giants already have a safety in Kenny Phillips who can do both of those well as well as cover, and they really have not asked their safeties to play like that either. Of course it all depends on how Fewell plans to play Rhodes but Buffalo didn't really utilize their safeties like that.
So we're working with at least 4 picks right? If so, then Tanny just may draft for quality depth unless the perverbial can't miss guys are available for a reasonable price. I don't see any quantum leaps in draft positioning as Tanny realizes we really do need quality (read "bodies") on our bench. Our Starters will be fine in 2010. Time to reinforce the roster so by week 17 or so, we don't have to play a guy with a cast on the DLine.
Ummm, no. I take get from it exactly what he says... They expect and want him back and to work on being more consistent. If you go into a bar and a girl says "I'm sorry I'm not interested" do you go on and on for hours and say "I'm sorry, I really think what you're saying is you really, really want me!" Give it up already.
