That is what you have to do with a rookie QB. The good news is that Sanchez has gained invaluable experience this post season and really grew before our eyes. I have not seen any stat comparisons, but I have to imagine that was probably the best performance by a rookie QB in a championship game. He showed that he is a real deal and now he has an entire offense to learn to strengthen his weaknesses and work with his WR's, TE's and RB's to further develop their chemistry together. Hopefully we will add a few more weapons to his arsenal, but I am really encouraged by this team's future potential.
We've been playing as a run first team all year, it's stupid to just abandon that. That being said, it was Sanchez's game to lose after Shonn went out and the play calling should've reflected that a bit more. So I can't say I totally disagree with him. However, he's a dumbass for saying it.
We were playing Peyton Manning! They can score in 2 damn plays! Of course we should have stuck to the game plan. You guys see what happened when we scored in 1 play, he came right back and drove down the field. Our game plan was to keep the ball out of his hands, and that's what we tried to do. Unfortunately, our hot hand got hurt, and that plan went to shit.
Rex Ryan made a similar comment, saying that going forward, we'll probably be more balanced on offense. It's tough to say that the Jets should have put more of a load on their rookie quarterback in this game if they wanted to win, but its an easy call, in light of what he did today, to say that going forward, if the Jets are going to build on this season and be perennial contenders, they'll have to lean a lot more on Sanchez's arm. A full offseason with Schottenheimer, Sanchez, Edwards, Cotchery, Keller, and Leon in town could result in a very, very different offensive attack in 2010.
I always thought that Montana was the best I ever saw, but Manning has the uncanny ability to ALWAYS pick the right receiver. ALWAYS.
Totally agree, I just had Din w/the wifey. She asked how and this is exactly what I said. Something is working but something is not. Why stick to what is NOT working?
Shut down all day? Really? You are absolutely unbelievable. Shonn Greene rushed for 41 yards on 10 carries, which ranks him in the top 80th percentile of YPC. Delete your account.
If he can continue to play as he has in the playoffs, there is no reason not to. These last couple of games have given him experience and confidence that should elevate him to the next level.
He wasn't shut down at all - in his last 6 runs he had 37 yards rushing. After that Jones had 8 runs for a total of 25 yards, with 12 coming on one play. There isn't the slightest doubt that losing him was a tremendous blow to the offense.
braylon deserves to be ripped a bit for that comment. whether its true or not you don't say that at this point in time. just because he had a big catch today doesn't mean he can make comments to the effect of a core player. Hell if he had not have dropped as many passes as he did this season maybe were playing that game at home or at least more rested. one thing i love about this team is that they don't have that "loser's mentality" that many teams do have including jets teams of the past. Braylon doesnt fit right because he has that mentality gained from his time in cleveland. If he had HALF the drive, attitude, and focus of Cotchery he would be a BEAST.
I think that it would have, yes. That's how ground-and-pound works. You chip away at the defense in small chunks, over and over, and eventually you bust a huge play. Maybe the outcome of the game is the same, but I'm pretty confident that how we'd get to that outcome would have looked MUCH different
Absolutely. He had averaged 4.1 yards per carry, and the gameplan all week was to run at them early and often and break open a big run in the 2nd half with Greene as we had done last week. He had been our playmaker this entire postseason. Without him, all we had was Jones who was on tired legs by this point, and you guys are far too fast for a back like Jones to succeed. I'd imagine we would have gotten closer on the first drive of the second half for Feely to make the kick, and we probably would have moved the ball and controlled the ball better as well. He wasn't busting open any big plays, but he was being consistently solid.
i dont want a guy who blames others on my team. hes still soap hands to me and worries me when a ball goes his way
dude, you came on here and made a classy thread congratulating us for our year. and now you feel the need for all this. just take your win and GTFO.
First of all, I saw his comments live and I'm pretty sure he was talking about things in the second half. Secondly, he never specifically mentioned playcalling. He said "we went after it" in the first half and then "got comfortable" and played to keep the lead. So, I think it might be a bit of a jump to automatically assume he was talking about playcalling (Although, my guess is that he probably was) Now, let's assume that he was, in point of fact, referring to the playcalling in the second half. If he was, then I don't really know what he means . . . I mean, we lost Shonn Greene (on a drive that looked very promising) and couldn't get the run going. People had been screaming on this board for weeks and weeks to play more conservatively and pound the football. Today, we did just that. We pounded the football. The issue was, we lost our explosive young runner with fresh legs and were forced to rely on our cagey veteran who just was lacking a burst for the past few games. The bottom line is, the Colts really slowed down our running game and when Greene went out (on that oh so promising loooking drive), we were fucked. We haven't relied on the pass all year and I don't understand how anyone could have expected us to be more aggressive then we were. Now, Sanchez played exceedingly well and he did a great job with the opportunities he got. The bottom line is, we've played to control the ball and stop the other team, and today, for the most part, we DIDN'T STOP THE OTHER TEAM. If you want to get on the playcalling, maybe you could argue that we should have been more aggressive in the last 1:13 of the 1st half (right after the Colts scored to cut the lead to 4 in about 4 plays) as a way to regain momentum going into halftime (this is what my dad was upset about). The thing with that though, is that Sanchez hasn't been a good two-minute QB all year (few rookies are) and we still had the lead and were getting the ball to start the 3rd quarter . . . I think we made the right decision there.
I agree with Edwards to an extent. We were too comfortable with the run to the right and kept going to it, even though Jones lacks the speed to get to the sidelines consistently. Jones should have been running the football up the middle. He had is best runs between the guards and that is where he should have been going. It's too much to place the game on Sanchez, regardless of his performance. I think we should have gone with more Brad Smith RUNS up the middle when Greene went down but what's done is done. Schottenheimer is coming back next season so hopefully he learns from this.
Slimjasi, you had me until the last part. I have said on a couple of other topics that the decision not to go for at least three points at the end of the half was bad and I said at the time that it would come back to haunt the Jets. In my mind when you play Peyton Manning the most important thing is NOT to keep him off the field. The most important things is to score each and every time you have the ball. Now of course you're not going to do that, but in my mind that has to be the goal. Whether you score in :30 or in 8:00 minutes it really doesn't matter. If this game showed anything it showed that Peyton's Colts can score in any manner possible - either quick strikes (at the end of the first half) or sustained drives (ie. the second half). So the best hope that you have is to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself and hope your "D" can stop them altogether or stop them for "3" when you score a TD. When you don't take advantage of every opportunity against Manning you are doomed to fail unless your "D" plays lights out. If you are afraid to make a mistake at the end of the half then you deserve what you get. I could see if Sanchez was shaky in the first half and you wanted to protect him, but that was not the case. Why put more pressure on your "D" to be more perfect?
I know Rex and Co. want to be ground and pound, but with a QB like Sanchez we really will start to be a more explosive offense. That's why we went up to get him, it's a great start for a long career as our jets QB. The best is yet to come with all these pieces in place.
