As a jet fan i came to the realization this is not a superbowl contending team this year. I feel this would be as good a season as any to make big risks and experiment with our team. What i mean is experimenting putting rookies in at starters including QB. And really opening up the playbook and mixing up the formations. I feel by doing this our team could identify some sleeper rookies and also find what system works best for our team.
agree we do not want to ruin the kid, thats how that happens QBs should be mandatory on the bench for the first season, and then they turn out better, look at all the guys in the past that have been rushed in, most careers didnt fare so well
This was my biggest gripe - and still is - about last year after the season was lost to us. Don't get me started. It won't be pretty if I do.
Putting in Clemmens right off the bat is a terrible idea. The success ratio for rookie QB's is horrible, and it has shown to be seriously detrimental to the development of the QB. The last thing we want to do is turn Clemmens into David Carr or Alex Smith. I do think that we should start both D'Brick and Mangold right off the bat. The OL needs time to gel, and the only true way to become a better OL in the NFL is through experience. The veterans on the OL should do a great job of teaching our young talent on the field. I would also like to see the young, experienced talent given a shot on this team, and this includes players like Houston, Cotchery, and Miller. The end of last season was a perfect opportunity for this, but I don't really feel like getting into that right now... And lastly, I would also like to see the playbook opened up a bit. Throw in a few trick plays, implement a hybrid defensive system using both the 3-4 and 4-3, design some creative blitz packages and try to get everyone involved with pressure on the QB, etc...
Payton Manning, Marino, Elway, Namath all got the majority of the snaps their rookie seasons. If Ramsey shows that he isn't the solution and Clemens shows some real potential he should get significant playing time this year.
I think Clemens should be benched for a year, mostly because he has so much to adjust too, he lived 2 hours away from the nearers shopping centre lol and he is really not adapted just yet to all that is going on at pro level. I think that putting him in during his rookie year in the soft state that he is in will ruin him. Let him get the experience, and figure how it all works before you start giving him snaps
Its early right now so I'm not thinking 100% clearly but here's a name i can think of who sat on the bench a year then had a GREAT year... Carson Palmer
Palmer had a great second half of his second year after a year on the bench and than had a great third year. Maybe if he got significant playing time his first year he wouldn't have struggled the first half of his second year? Tough call.
There's no way to tell if sitting any person a year makes them a better pro in long run, but it looks like qb's take less of a beating after having a year to look at how someone else plays the position. Not sure of whether that will apply to Clemens, but the safest thing to do is let him watch for now. However, if he is out and out the best player in training camp and preseason he's earned the right to get a chance to start for the team. Other then that I say let the best players play. Rookie or veteran, I want to see the best football team the jets can put on the field, not some experimental team.
This appears to be a covert thread to push Clemens for starter. How come you didn't advocate putting in the rookie tight end and the rookie Brad Smith?. The HC will play his best players every Sunday this season regardless of experience...... except rookie QB Kellen Clemens.
No rookie QB should start unless he is ready to start, and no rookie usually is, they need to learn the playbook and see some defenses should take like 1 year for some and 2 or3 for others. Defenses are diffrent they just have to defend and can learn the defense in camps. Miller should be able to start, but the problem is barrett where will he play? Nickel? or trade coleman and move barrett over to the safety position, he is a sure tackler and plays the run extremely well.
While I agree that Clemens should get playing time, I don't think it should be a week 1 thing...All the guys you mentioned above were starters from day 1...I don't want Clemens turning into a Ryan Leaf type of QB where he gets thrown out there for no reason RIGHT AWAY...midway through the season, I expect him to have learned a lot more by then, and that's when they should give him some playing time...All other rookies, ala, Brad Smith, D'Brick, Mangold, should all start right away...The QB position is the one and only positition where MOST of the time, it's not good to put them out there right away...give him time to learn the speed of the game, defenses, and his teammates first...
If the Jets are lucky enough to be on the winning end of a blow out, I would like to see Clemens get some mop up duty where all the snaps are running palys or safe pass plays with no pressure to "win", since the game is already decided. Getting a handful of snaps in a "safe" situations might go a long way to showing him the speed of the game, etc. Just a thought.
I do not think the Jets approached the draft to experiment with the team. If the new regime belives that experimentation is appropriate, then the Jets have made a huge mistake with hiring Mangini and promoting Tannenbaum. I do not want to see clemens this season at all. If we do see him as starting quarterback I believe that we will be drafting in the top 5 again. I do not think anyone wants to see that again. While Ramsey was not great with the Skins, I do beleive if he gets to play in a real offense with protection, he will be decent starting QB in this league. Yes you can assume by this last comment that I fully expect Ramsey to beat out Pennington if he can grasp and run the offense.
