IMO... THIS IS BS! Ravens LB Lewis fined $5K for hit on Collie Posted: January 22nd, 2010 | Jason La Canfora The NFL fined Ravens LB Ray Lewis $5,000 for his hit on Colts WR Austin Collie during the second quarter of Indianapolis? 20-3 divisional-playoff victory over Baltimore last week, according to a league source. The league cited Lewis for unnecessary roughness, specifically for making helmet-to-helmet contact with his opponent.
Their helmets barely hit imo.. It's not like Lewis was aiming for a helmet to helmet hit.. Don't like this call.
You clearly see him on the one- over the QB angle- he puts his shoulder and arm out to make the hit. Collie begins to put his head down and the helmets make contact. I'll say it again.....the Pussy teams are getting the calls. Simms said it best. The 13-10 games are better than the 45-40 games because of the suspense. Me, I like Defense and especially aggressive D. So right now I am in heaven w/ Our defense and when I watch the Ravens they play a style I like so it pisses me off when the League goes out of it's way to make a point.
I hate that penalty. What is he supposed to do? Not hit him and let him catch the touchdown? I thought the call was stupid and now I think the fine is just idiotic. Do they want Ray to go feet first to avoid all helmet contact?
To be fair if you watch the last angle of the hit, you can clearly see their heads bump and get pushed back BEFORE the tackle. It's very slight, but noticeable. I don't know if I agree with this call in such a crucial game. HOWEVER, I do hate when a defender hits with his helmet, as much as I love tough defense. My favorite Jet of all time was the victim of one too many, and look where it got him... early retirement (Chrebet). Plus, you have to realize the ref probably heard the helmets crack (They make a distinct sound). I usually hate the refs, but when they're right, they're right.
You're crazy, haha. The one was a clear helmet to helmet, and a vicious one at that. The dude had to have plates put into his face to reconstruct his cheek/jaw. Incidental or not, helmet to helmet is a serious penalty and Ray is notorious for them (Think Ocho Cinco this season.). I understand making your presence known. but damn... you don't need to try to end a guys career. (Not saying the Collie one was that bad.)
That was one of many BS calls that helped Indy last Saturday and on top it they fine the guy? Give me a break.
This is what worries me about tomorrow. That CALL was awful so I'm not even going to get into this fine. I really hope the refs don't do their part to ensure the Colts move on but they get so much preferential treatment it's disgusting.
I agree, spur of the moment the refs probably made the only call they could. The helmets clearly hit, and you're right that they probably made a distinct sound, so they had no choice. I believe the big mistake here is the fine. As GM said, Collie dropped his head to take the hit, and Lewis was trying to lead with his shoulder to Collie's chest. But, when Collie dropped his head it was to the spot that Lewis was planning to drive his. If Collie had gotten hurt, then I could possibly see it, but otherwise no fine was necessary.
Think about all the calls against Revis last time we played the Colts. I really don't expect any different this game.
My father made the same argument when I watched the game with him. Watch the Jets game if you Tivo'd it, though. Both sides have many similar hits. Incidental helmet contact happens all the time. The refs are supposed to throw the flag for INTENTIONAL helmet contact, not ANY helmet contact. If they flagged that play every time it happened, the flag would be thrown at least 3-4 times in every NFL game throughout the season. It's a matter of favoritism. Remember the Patrick Wilis hit on Brad Smith? Willis squared Smith up and just lowered his head and launched himself into Smith after Smith was already being dragged down. Brad Smith FROZE and then started convulsing. No flag. Or there's always the aforementioned Boldin hit, where Boldin was okay and everyone was focused on "OH MY GOD is Boldin okay?" while Smith had a severe concussion that kept him out of practice for weeks. This flag is nothing but politics. The refs favor big time players and big market teams when this flag is involved.
Couldn't say it any better myself, Also, Bryan Thomas would have been flagged for his stick during the chargers game if these fucks were reffing the game, guaranteed.
