For me , I'm still not happy with Hobson playing OLB in the 34 and Anthony Schlegel is not an outside contain LB (yet). And as for DE Bryan Thomas HAS to step up. If it were possible I would like to see another OLB and DE signed.
Hmm how did I miss corner Dyson will be fine and I hope that Barrett too will find his way , but an injury to either of them leaves us thin on the ground. Is that the new hog? Sweet:beer:
another DB would be nice, but as is we are fine... The DT rotation i think can manage, the DE position can use one more guy.
I think the Jets need a stud pass rusher...since we lost JAbe, everyone needs to step up...if not, look for this position to be addressed as a high priority in 07' FA...another good LB to compliment Vilma wouldn't hurt either...he can't do it all by himself...all of our other LB's are question marks at this point...we don't know how they will perform...if they do well, all the better...if not, Vilma and the Jets D will be in trouble...
I'm worried about NT, OLB and DE in that order. NT is going to come down to whether or not D-Rob can make that adjustment. If he can't then we've got a problem that needs to be solved. I see Barton playing outside, not in the middle as many have speculated. That leaves the Jets needing to find another strong candidate to play opposite him. DE in some ways is linked to the NT and specifically to D-Rob. I expect the Jets to try D-Rob as a 3-4 DE if he cannot adjust to playing the nose. He's massive for the position and would be a very interesting option to keep the tackle off of the OLB. Other than that KVO is probably still serviceable although likely not a strength on the field.
I like the poetential of this D DE's- D'Rob and Ellis (Kimo rotates) DT- Poua (D"Rob) OLB- Barton and Thomas (Chattam & Cassell) ILB- Vilma and Hobson (Schlegel) CB- Dyson and Barett (Miller and Straigt) SS- Rhodes (Maddox) FS- Coleman (Smith) Again some concerns at DT...to me that is the only HUGE question
IMO, Barton, Hobson, Chatham, and Thomas will the OLBs. In the middle will be Vima, Kassell, and Schlegel.
I would like a speedy rush OLB, but all in all I'm happy with what we have on defense. I'm sure it will take some time for the new unit to jell but if we get lucky and Bryan Thomas turns into our pass rush olb then we should be pretty nice on D. I don't value having a slow 350 lb NT to eat up blockers. If they decide to not double team robertson and use an extra lineman on attacking a Linebacker, I expect Robertson to become a disruptive force in the backfield..... for him to become a force in the future he'll need to find a solution for his chronic knee problem, or else we just paid a whole lot of money for an average tackle.
We picked up DT Pope who should definitely start over Pouha. I personally like.... DE- Kimo and Ellis DT- D'Rob and Pope on rotation (keeping D'Rob fresh) OLB- Barton and Hobson (with Thomas rotating in as a situational pass rusher) ILB- Vilma and Kassell (Schlegel coming in off the bench for run support) CB- Dyson and Miller (Barrett the nickle back)..i dont mind barrett but he lets up way too many first downs and Miller could be a great corner if given the chance. SS- Rhodes FS- Coleman I have concerns at DE considering we have no one coming off the bench. Contrary to other opinions, I like our LB's..we are going to rush the passer more as a unit this year. Kassell is a proven starter at MLB with the Titans and is big enough to take up blockers so Vilma can make plays. People forget how good Barton really is..he has always put up great numbers and can rush the passer. Hobson isn't bad either and Thomas can come in and just use his speed to Rush.
Jets lost 10 1/2 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 10 INT's with the losses of Pro Bowlers John Abraham and Ty Law. Jets had four wins last year, in three of those wins Abraham and Law each had one or more sacks or INT's. DeWayne Robertson has bad knees and is ill suited for a 3-4 defense and Jonothon Vilma is also ill-suited for a 3-4 defense. But we do have the 'Genius' who in his first year as a defensive coordinator led the Patriots to a 26th ranked total defense, a 31st ranked pass defense and a 31st ranked defensive turnover ranking.
IMO, with the assumption we are switching to the 3-4, the 2 areas that concern me on defense are OLB and DE. We have no proven pass rusher at the OLB position. Also we lack depth at the DE. We have Ellis and Von O as are starters. Beyond that we have David Ball and nothing else. You like to have more depth at that position so that you can have a rotation and keep the players fresh. I think D-Rob is probably going to be used more as a NT.
I think this defense will be alot better than many believe. We have alot of players who can do alot of different things well. This D will not be a pure 3-4 nor a pure 4-3. What that means is all this talk concerning the hyrbid position, or the the 2 Gap NT, is not the major problem it is framed to be. This D will be based around creating mismatches and confussion. Whether that means playing a 2-5, 4-3, 3-4 or an 8 man front..the opposition will see it all. We have plenty of speed, strength and size to play all those different style D's. The only real problem is the CS ironing out who will play where when all is said and done. There will surely be growing pains in running this system. However, I think talent wise, we are looking very good.
Nope! Its a 2002 Suzuki Marauder 800 that I painted and customized. It used to be blue, and looked nothing like it does now! lol
This is probably my biggest worry. But, we knew we were not going to fix everything in one year. We still might have an outside chance at an FA signing, but I am not counting on it.
I think your DBs are weaker then you might think. No dominant force there at all. The CBs are helped out over the top by two young and still not stable players.
