so when he wins the rushing title, it's all his accomplishment. When he stinks like last year, it's all the line's fault.
no. when he won the rushing title it was all his and the o-lines accomplishment. and when he sucked last year it was because he had no were to run to. Ladanian tomlinson wouldve had trouble gettin 1000 behind the line we had last year.
In my opinion, This year we will be doing a RB by committee. When one of them begins to show signs of fatigue, bring in either Houston or Washington. Personally, i believe that Blaylock may be a June 1 cut. For those of you who say he costs more to cut than to keep, he doesnt after 6/1. But if the Jets do end up keeping him, then throw him into the combination as well. I think that Curtis has two more years in him before he retires. After he does evetually retire, i hope he becomes the Jets RB Coach. Also, depending on where we are in the first round next year (my guess is around #10-#15) we will probably draft a playmaker. Whether it be a RB, WR, or OLB for the defense. If we don't go RB, then i think that we could stick with what we have for the future. Have a thunder n' lightning back duo with Cedric Houston & Leon Washington. (FIRST POST)
A beaten up, old Curtis Martin is still better than that combination. I mean come on, a rookie and a 2nd year player with 81 NFL carries, mostly during garbage time?
I think after recovering from surgery that Curtis has one more good year left in him. Blaylock, now healthy again as well, provides a nice change of pace back. There will be an opportunity this year to see if Washington has potential and then the question of a new No. 1 back can be dealt with in next year's draft after the line has a year's experience under its belt. As for this year, I think the offense is going to struggle to score points and will have to rely on the defense to keep it in games. The new playmakers will come next year but Mangini is off to a good start in rebuilding and the Jets should be a much better team in January than they will be in September.
this is a mediocre group. pray for an upgrade on the OL. maybe the rookies will do a good job on the run. that is fairly basic. but don't exect much from this group. play the ones who do not fumble.
You can't expect Tanngini to fix all the Jet problems (qb, running back, ol, de, etc.) in one draft. Its going to take minimum 2-3 drafts to fill all the holes. Expect the Jets to go about 5-11 this year and continue to plug holes next year with draft and free agency.
We should give Martin the ball 350 times this year so next year at this time I can update your quote:
Time will tell if we need to address the situation. Teams have won superbowls using the RB by committee approach so I say if we can set up a successful duo with washington and houston I'm all for it. On paper it looks like the two of them compliment each other, but we'll see how things play out this year with the revampled oline.
I agree that our RB situation could be better. We actually thought we should have drafted a RB at #29 or #35 in the draft. Since we didn't go in that direction, I believe next offseason will primarily be concerned with playmakers at RB and WR...This year it was all getting solid depth on D with some great additions, and on offense it was all about the trenches and perhaps QB of the future...that leaves us with holes at WR and RB for next offseason to be addressed...If you look around the league at the good/great teams, they all have either a great WR and/or RB on their team...the Jets need a player to scare opposing defenses...right now, the guy isn't on the roster, but I can assure everyone that since we got everything we needed to address the most this offseason/draft, next year is going to be a playmaker's draft...
for now our RB situation is what it is and theyve made the best with what they have. Blaylock is a non factor IMO. I think Martin should be put in a Faulk-like role. or at least see 15 carries a game while we hand about 10-15 other carries to the other backs. but verdict isnt in on Houston yet. and Leon Washington and Dontrell Moore are two prospects that have me very intrigued. so we'll see what they have this yr if not theyll address it next yr. plain and simple we attacked the OL by getting Brick and Mangold. Mangini signed a few LB's he must have faith in. one position at a time, all the answers dont come in one season. although I'll admit I'm a fan of the RB position and would kill to have Adrian Peterson next yr. hehe. if that seems to be a good move when the time comes.
He actually passed that age a couple of years ago, and I still am amazed at how well he has played while he is what the "experts" would call passed his prime. With all of that said Curtis most likely wont be a dominate back anymore but he is still better that many starting RB's. He will have to rely on his backups more then ever this year to have a productive year so he doesn?t wear down.
When you say he is better than many starting RB what does that mean? Last year he ranked 21 in total carries 26th in total yards and dead last out of the top 30 in YPC. Intrestingly Corey Dillon who is a year younger than Curtis looked like he lost a step even when he was healthy at the end of last year. He had very similiar numbers to Curtis. Age can't be run away from. Guys on really bad teams like Chris Brown, Ruben Droughns, Kevin Jones and Antwain Smith had better years than Curtis last year and many of them were hurt and their teams were every bit as bad as the Jets.
if curtis puts up those kinda # when he is healthy that it is time for him to be a backup, but IMO we had the worst O-line in the NFL. I still this Curtis is better then the backs you listed and their lines weren't in as much disarray as ours. No one will know if Curtis has anything left until the season starts, and I am not saying that he is going to be as good as 04, but I would like to believe with the determination and work ethic that Curtis has He will prove that he can start at least one more year. And if he doesn’t then I hope the best man wins the job. Respectfully disagree--we're rebuilding so why have Martin limp around when we could be taking a REAL look at replacements. I'll take the combo over Martin. Curtis is a hall of famer, but damn it, it's time to face reality--good teams move on and don't cling to past glory.
