http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis' coverage skills are so incandescent that he's increasingly being compared to Deion Sanders. Revis But a pair of authorities I interviewed this week for a lengthy Revis feature saw a different resemblance. "Darrelle Revis is a lot like Rod Woodson was in his prime and maybe a better cover guy," ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said. It's difficult to compare Revis with Sanders because Revis is a proficient tackler. Sanders avoided tackling like it was small pox. "He's way more physical than Deion," Dilfer said. "Darrelle is a physical guy. I was asked who the best tackling corner was in the NFL, and I put Antoine Winfield first and Darrelle Revis second. He plays run support. He's a sure tackler on the perimeter." Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. mentioned Woodson when projecting Revis' future. In three NFL seasons, Revis has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice and the All-Pro team once. Woodson began his Hall of Fame career as a cornerback, but he was enough of a hitter that when he lost a step in is mid-30s, he was able to make a smooth transition to free safety, earning All-Pro honors in his penultimate season. "He'll thump you in the run game," said Williamson, who recruited Revis to the University of Pittsburgh. "He's really competitive that way. Because of his smarts and his ability to stick you, I could see him six, seven, eight years from now being a free safety if his speed wanes a little bit. "I could see him being a Rod Woodson to end his career, and you can't say that about many corners, to make the move to safety like that."
In his third season, Revis is as good as Rod Woodson ever was. Next season he'll be better, and Woodson will hate him even more, and continue to deny that Revis is better than Asomugha. Rod Woodson is a twat.
Revis is better than Woodson, Woodson was overrated as a corner. GREAT safety but I remember some big time WRs torching him when he was a corner.
Agreed. Even if their games aren't exactly alike, I think that Revis can best be compared to Sanders because Deion was the last corner who really took over games like Revis can. Revis is more physical, Sanders was a better playmaker, but both played truly elite cornerback.
Revis will be better that Deion ever was for one simple reason. Deion was a pussy. Revis will step up and make the big hit. Deion never wanted to break a nail.
I completely agree. It might be blasphemy to a lot of NFL analysts but I never thought Rod Woodson was a shutdown corner.
I think when it's all said and done, Revis will be one of the best corners to ever play the game, he's humble and all he wants to do is get better everyday, he's becoming a true leader in the locker room (even though he didn't want to be - he just wanted to play football) lock this man up for the rest of his career Woody and Tanny shouldn't care what it costs. How crazy is it that we have the poss of having the best Jet QB (once he's "arrived" which will come in due time) and Best Jet CB ever right here and right now
i agree that Woodson was alittle overrated as a player. He was def. very good..but ne never impressed me much as a corner. I'd say Revis has shown me more in his short time at corner than Woodson ever did...especially in coverage.
The only thing that Revis and Woodson have in common is that they'll both be HOFers. Oh, and I could see Revis moving to FS if he ever lost a step. I remember they said Revis was too slow back in his draft year...
ha, that 4.5 40 with a bad hamstring. I remember that. But then he ran a 4.33 at Pitts pro day and shut everyone up.
