If I rememeber correctly Pouha was mention as a DE and has played that spot a few times when Big Jenk was still in there. While not a speed rusher he can help free up the LB's to get in for the sack. If you look at Ellis he too is not the fastest guy but has been solid as a rock for many years and still he get his sacks when the situation allows. I certainly would not mind Pouha playing a little DE next year to better learn the spot and add another notch to what he can offer as a backup for this defense. I know many were disappointed when he was first drafted, but it looks like he was a solid pick that is now beginning to pay dividends for the Jets.....
It does make you second guess where we want to go in the draft but I think its great that we really dont have any GLARING weaknesses that we need to draft and can draft BPA. With Pouha and Jenks flexibility (they have both played END in some 3-4 packages) we could get a guy like Mt Cody or another NT and have a great rotation at NT & End (plus flexibility if we want a pass rush vs run stuffing package). Can you imagine starting 1st and 10 against a front of JENKS-CODY-POUHA?!?!?! I could also see us dropping 1 or 3 of our aging DEs and going for a young stud DE and keep the NT rotation as is. Regardless, I'm excited for next season!........after we win the superbowl this year of course ; )
I think we just came together at that point in the season and gelled... If kris jenkins was here we would of had a better pass defense
There was a lot of anti-Pouha sentiment on this board when we drafted him. He would have likely been there a round later, but it was a good pick. He was a 26 year old "project", and that was why so many people were down on the pick. His technique and stamina were awful, but I always felt he would come around and eventually be a solid contributor. He can't penetrate like Jenkins, but very few NT's can. He does a good job of clogging up his two gaps. When he gets doubled, he sometimes gets blown out, but then Harris and Scott fill with a clean shot. Devito does a good job rotating in for Pouha on passing downs. I don't think Pouha will ever be a very effective DE, his feet just aren't quick enough. He is solid depth, and we are very lucky we drafted him 4 years ago. He is good enough to rotate in with Jenkins to keep Jenkins fresh. Jenkins like a lot of big guys doesn't have the best stamina either. Pouha has greatly improved on his technique, and has worked on his stamina. I remember his rookie year, two plays and he was tired. He is an easy guy to like if you have ever met him. My biggest concern with him was I didn't know if he could ever be mean and angry enough to play NT. A very religious, soft spoken man.
We lost jenks early in week 6 just Pace's second game back to action. I think adding him (removing Gholston) to the lineup is making the majority of that impact to the run defense improving. Obviously if Gholston was making any progress at all, he would still be getting PT now that Pace has returned, so it is my view that there was a lot of over-compensating going on trying to fix the mistakes and cover for VG. Once Pace returned, the defense no longer had a major liability and began to play the way Ryan wanted them to. They were about to hit their stride that week in Buffalo with Jenks, and as fantastic as Sione Pouha has played, Jenkins would have our run defense playing even more stout. Again, not to take anything away from Pouha but I think it is the combonation of Pace returning, plus the guys starting to get into a rythm with the new defense than it is pouha playing better than Jenks would have been.
Jenkins back. other players getting experience and confidence in his absence. players having a year in the system under their belt. next year the D could/should be even better.
Its not that at all.... The Jets got better against the run, because they had more time playing in the system Week two or week twelve, which would be better in a new system, but with Jenkins we had a threat in the middle.
Can this guy please get some fucking love ? Hes taking the double team, getting off blocks when he needs too, getting pressure. He's doing it all.. He needs some love !
With Jenkins anchoring the middle next season this D will be that much better. But let's give DeVito, Pouha and Green all the credit. They have gotten the job done.
