Group 1 Running Backs 40 times: Joseph Addai/LSU: 4.37 || 4.37 Maurice Drew/UCLA: 4.47 || 4.43 Jerome Harrison/Washington State: 4.52 || 4.48 Brian Calhoun/Wisconsin (Very Disappointing): 4.63 || 4.60 ouch:shit:
Woah! That's REALLY slow for Calhoun. He's been timed in the 4.35 range prior to this. Still, I wouldn't let that stop me from taking him.
Has anyone seen the article on how bogus 40 times are? I think it might have been floating aorund this forum a month or two ago. Basically it was how they tracked the first 40 yards of olympic sprinters and they were running in the high 4's. So if any of the 40 times were completely accurate, most football players would supposedly be faster than Olympic sprinters which is obviously not true. Anyways...did anyone see that Maurice Drew is 5'6"? Count me out on that.
To me height isn't an important factor in a running back. He's 5'6 but around 205 and built like a truck.
I think that they must be exagerrated too, but something that you have to factor in is the reaction time which probably adds at least 0.1 seconds. In track, they react to a gun, in football, they start when they're ready.
I remember that article and what they said was wrong. They believed that the 40 times were innaccurate because the NFL players that run 4.4s run the same 4.4 that an Olympic sprinter runs. They cited Ben Jonhson as an example, a guy that ran 4.3, I believe. What they didnt mention was that 4.3 was his time in 40 meters. I dont think theres a 40 meter dashes, I think the sprints are longer, but they still set up electronic lasers every 10m to gauge his splits. Thus his 40 yard time would be less, maybe around a 4.2. They also dont mention that his electronic time of 4.3 would equal a 4.0 hand timed. There is a difference of around .3 sec, so hand times are always faster than electronic times. His 40 m time would be 4.0 hand timed and in the 40 yd would be around a 3.8
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/9266806 Sorry guys. Scroll to the bottom of the article. This should raise some eyebrows!!
I like Drew he is built like a mack truck, his quads were absoultely massive, I would like a guy who is 5'6 7/8 over a guy who is 6'0 201, if they were equal in skill, I would love to have him play alongside Houston
Jesse Lumsden from McMaster in Hamilton, Ontario ran a 4.43 3 weeks ago for the Bills but signed with the Redskins a few days later. Watch for him next season, we'll all wish he was here.
I agree with the laser and hand times, but you also have to put into account on the field they are running in.
Great Point, T-Bird. Brian Calhoun will excel in this category. He's very much like Curtis Martin, shifty, but a bit quicker in the open field. Calhoun is a very tough RB similar to Martin.
