I'm confused. Are you saying that Jones gets stopped for 1 yard or less consistently while the Jets OL blows huge holes in team and ther are pllenty of big gapping holes? All this is happening at the same time TJ is amassing 1400 yards. Is that even possible? Running styles may be similar but never the same. It's apparent you "hate" TJ's running style. I'm curious to know how you felt about Curtis Martin's cause I find their styles somewhat similar.
It scares the shit out of me when he'e being chased or pretty much anytime he has the ball longer then a few seconds.
I like both of the backs, but Shonne does fumble a little bit though. You don't see that from Thomas Jones. Also, how many times have you seen Thomas Jones run into the line of scrimmage and actually run into his own Lineman. That's from TJ not waiting that half sec to hit the hole. Even Chris Collingsworth noticed that in last weeks game.
So after reading my post, that's what got from it. You got that I think 40 times are the end all...OK
I agree, he tends to run right into the lineman at times. Instead of running THROUGH the hole, he runs TO the hole, which is where he blasts one of our OL right in the behind. I don't want to take too much away from him, I still think he's a good running back. Greene on the other hand seems to have better vision to go along with his explosiveness. He's not a 25+ yard runner, but he's definitely a solid <25 yard guy.
If you watched this week's players news conference TJ talked about how they consistently face 8, 9 or 10 men in the box on many running plays. Given this type of defense against our rushing game I'm not surprised that there are many runs for 1 yard or less. My criticism of TJ is that he has started (at least) the last two years very slowly with sub-par performances in the first few games.
I look at that more like he is improving over the course of the season. And I would never critisize a player who's biggest problem is finishing strong.
lets be honest TJ's biggest problem is that as soon as he's touched by a defender or even worse by one of our O lineman he drops to the ground he can barely ever break a tackle, he pretty much falls down by being blown on.
I wish our starting RB was 6'2" 230 pounds with blazing speed, lightning quickness, sure hands, ability to pick up the blitz, superb agility, great strength, ya dah, ya dah, ya dah. Until that guy comes around, I'll take the occasional running into linemen in return for consistent 1,000-1400 yards a seasons, leadership and ball security.
This is much more true at the beginning of the season than at the end. It happened that way last year and this. I see many plays recently when he keeps his legs pumping upon initial hits. He does tend to go down when hit low but then again this are big fast defenders applying the hits.
:-D By no means was I being down on TJ, and if it sounded that way, let me correct myself. I feel that Jones speed sometimes hurts him, because he doesn't wait for the gap to open. Otherwise, I think he's a great back, doesn't fumble and so forth. He's putting up some pretty good numbers, considering he does split carries with Leon (When healthy) and shonne.
The guy is a 10 year veteran, how much 'improvement of the course of a season' should he really need? My main problem with TJ is also his slow starts, but it ain't because he needs improvement. It's because it takes 3-5 games a year for him to find his heart.
I don't care how long he's been playing. Any back that can give a team his best late in the season when they really need it, is a quality asset to his team.
Martin was much better than TJ but I always felt Martin was over rated. He was consistently good not consistently great. Go take a look at the game logs and see how many runs TJ has for minus 2 to plus 2. Huge amount. They had similiar running styles but if it was third and three or third and 2 Martin put his head down and went for it. TJ simply doesn't do that.
correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't that the same knock on curtis the last 2 productive seasons he had?i think it's an age thing.it takes more reps than they get in the preseason to get the body and eyes back in synch.
Curtis's last productive year was 04 his first three games he had 196, 119 and 110 yards. He was pretty much shot by the playoffs.
Yeah, no shit you're not getting into semantics, because if you did then your argument would get blown to smithereens. Even a blind man would have trouble reading edge's post and interpreting it as 'Shonn Green is a home run hitter'.
He is a pretty good running back. Personally I am very happy with the pickup, but he needs to take better care of the football.
Shonn Greene = Tailback first step quickness + Excellent vision+ Fullback power = Hard, downhill runner who will run DB's over rather than juke them. Quick as hell from 0 to 15 yards past LOS. Average after that. Jones = Slow first step speed+Excellent vision+Decent power = Powerful runner who needs large, clear holes and lanes to run in, but can be lethal in the open field once he stretches his stride out. Leon = Unreal first step quickness + Excellent vision+ 6 speed trans= Quick, elusive scat back who can burn you BIG time if he gets to your second level. Almost uncatchable in the open field....kiss him goodbye. Apples, Oranges, and Bananas. If I have to pick two.....give me Greene & Leon.
