Any coach that wins a SB deserves credit but Elway did make 4 w/o him and Shanahan never made one w/o Elway. He'll make them competitive like Gibbs did but I'll be surprised if they are contenders as long as he has full power. I would be saying different things if he didn't have ful power.
If they are smart they keep Campbell... he's had to learn a new offense every season until Zorn.. and even then Zorn's offense sucked big time. With the proper coaching he can become a legit QB plus next year he'll be playing for his contract... that's a big motivational tool!
Elway went to 3 SBs prior to Shanahan becoming the HC in Denver. 2 of them were with Shanahan as the OC (SB XXI & SB XXII). Shanahan was also the OC for one of the greatest offenses ever the 1994 49ers (SB XXIX) and then went on to win 2 SBs in Denver (SB XXXII & SB XXXIII)
I don't care what he did as an OC, in 1993 that SF O w/o him was 1st in points and yards, in '94 w/ him they were 1st in pts and 2nd in yds. he didn't exactly inherit the '95 Jets offense. SF was 1st in pts from 1992-1995, Shanahan was only w/ the one of those years. he won 2 SBs in den w/ a healthy TD and w/ Elway- what did he do w/o a healthy TD and w/o Elway?
Wonder if anyone questions whether they followed the Rooney rule never heard about them interviewing anyone else
And what did they do in that one season? EDIT - he was their OC in 1992, 93 and 94. All three years going to the NFC Championship Game and winning the Super Bowl in 1994. He never had the best teams, but he always put a competitive team on the field even with QBs like Bubby Brister and Brian Griese. Jake Plummer played his best with Shanahan and they beat your Patriots in 2005.
Shanny hasn't done shit since he lost TD and Elway. In his last handful of seasons he drafted Maurice Clarrett, and signed for stupid money or traded for the Cleveland Browns defensive line which sucked in Cleveland. Better hope the GM (Allen) makes the personnel decisions there. Shanny is a great offensive mind, but unless he brings in a real defensive guru, the 'skins won't do any better than his Broncos teams the last 5 years.
They interviewed Jerry Gray (on their own staff) a few weeks ago. Some say it was a legit interview, most think it was a way to clear the way for Shanny to come in before Zorn's seat was cold.
They won the SB thanks to Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson splitting up. if they did that in '92 or '93 SF would have won in those years too. He will have them competitive, competing for playoff spots but if he has full power like has been reported I don't see them competing for Championships. My patriots? I despise the Pats and Brady, I apologize if I can put my personal feelings aside and appreciate greatness.
Further proof that you don't like anybody. He was fine in Denver until he got Cutler and put him in. Had he stuck with Plummer in 2006 they would have made the playoffs, so that's on Cutler but also on Shanahan for cutting his own throat with him. Cutler may end up never making the playoffs, just being a fantasy stats hero.
Yeah, that was bush league. As is the team overall. Interview a guy on the head coache's staff about replacing him just to satisfy the Rooney Rule is terrible for many reasons. By the way, I hate the Rooney Rule. It must be a little insulting for African Americans. Most are just being interviewed to satisfy the rule and then totally disgarded. The ones who are hired are hired because they deserve it, thus the rule is worthless.
If I owned the skins, I would hire Russ Grimm -- the former Hog would be loved by true skins fans. the man knows success from Pitt and Ariz. He knows how a front office should be run (from pitt). He knows Olines and calls plays in ariz. seriously. russ grimm. Shanny is the wrong man for the job -- skins will reach the playoffs 50% of the time with limited success.
One only has to look at the draft record of Shanahan the executive to see that this might not work out. However, Washington already has a nice amount of talent on the defensive side of the football. As we know, just looking at names such as Willie Middlebrooks and Jarvis Moss, finding defensive talent through the draft isn't Shanny's forte.
