Seriously for you guys calling for x-y-z coordinators think about the implementation of an entirely new offensive scheme and full playbook to learn. that's not to say don't modify it a bit as shotty definetely has too many cutesy plays. But to learn an entirely new system for Sanchez and everyone else would be detrimental to the growth of this team. A transition would stall the progression of our QB and WR's even more That encompasses a lot of things including schemes, terminology etc. I think the main fault of the current offense is the a.) specific play calling at times. Large difference between play design.... and actual play calling and use of plays in specific instances. schotty's "play calling" is questionable to mediocre (at best) but i do like his playbook also b.) Lack of comfort with sanchez. in that sense i mean knowing the playbook in and out and making throws without even thinking. I think that is in large part a reason of a 2-3 year QB development process for most...that and a new QB seeing specific defensive schemes thrown at him in real time. The changing of a system will also alter the chemistry with sanchez and the WR's (p.s. i'm really high but does not having an avatar make you skip over someone's post amongst the 53892895th page threads? Never seem to get a response to even well thought out, logical posts)
This has been my main point for removing Schotty. Keep the language the same, but change the man calling the plays. Schotty's non QB friendly bullshit can go away, and the next guy can take Rex's philosophy of having a boring, ball control offense will do wonders for Sanchez. The kid is a downfield passer, but he has to learn how to see the field and check down when necessary to be an efficient downfield passer. He's got the tools, now remove the man hurting his progression.
I agree. Which is why even though I really am not a big Schottenheimer fan at all, I'm willing to keep him around, and if we do get rid of him, Callahan's the guy I want promoted.
I agree for the most part. We could probably do without the double reverses, option plays, and fake WR screens, though.
Trick and gadget plays are always remembered when they don't work . We've actually had pretty good success this year running the wildcat/seminole, its just that everyone will remember teh times it did not work. I will agree there are times Shotty calls some "trick " plays that seem to take us out of a good rythym, but I think ithe flipside is also true. I really can't understand all the hate for the guy this year. He's definitely become the new Jet scapegoat and the player/coach everyone wants to throw under the bus this year.
This. --------------- And to the fan in fishtown, yes, get an avatar. I wouldn't call it "necessary" as I personally read every post in threads I visit, but an avatar makes you recognizable. Good post too. I agree with you, and I wrote pretty much the same thing in a different thread yesterday (the one about Shonn Greene I think.)
Seriously? Can you tell me what system he runs? It's like a mishmosh concoction of WCO and Air Coryell with some needless trick plays sprinkled through it. If they want to go full WCO under a better philosophy, it would not be a huge transition.
Does it matter what offense we run. When we pass the ball everyone wants us to run. When we run the ball and get stuffed , everyone wants us to pass. Everyone here thinks since we're the #1 ranked rushing team , that we can just line up against any D and just run it down their throats. Statistics are for losers , a lot of that rush yardage was piled up against some pretty horrid run defenses. Cincy has a pretty good run D. We are going to need a balanced attack to beat this team. But I can just envision the first bad pass we throw Sun , Jets fans will be bitching , just run the ball Shotty/Rex. Our main problem this year has been inexperience at QB and questionable depth at WR especially before the Edwards trade and when Cotch was hurt. It also hasn't helped that Keller has disappeared in more than a handful of games this year and we lost probbaly the only player on our offense who is effective at run a screen ( Leon).
I agree and disagree. I think the real problem with his play calling is that we simply don't have the kind of offense (more specifically, a QB) that can overcome the potential downside of failed gadget plays. For instance, if the Colts lose 14 yards on a failed reverse on 1st and 10, the offense still has a highly capable QB who has a good chance of making up the lost yardage. We, on the other hand, have a rookie QB prone to throwing INTs, and a (albeit) good rushing game, but one who most likely won't pick up 24 yards in two downs. So, yes, I think it's natural for fans to never complain when their team is successful; but when you're losing drives because your O-coordinator doesn't comprehend our offensive strengths/weaknesses, then that's when you start seeing the lynch mob form... Truth is, Mark is the reason we're 8-7 instead of 13-2 (IMO). But you just can't blame a rookie QB for playing like a rookie QB - you need to blame the guy(s) not putting him in a better position to succeed.
Very good post. People don't appreciate that Sanchez is really a weak link right now. His early success on top of last year's Flacco/Ryan situation gave people the idea that a QB should just be able to execute. Are Schotty's schemes overly complicated? Yes. Are they hard to learn? Clearly. When Sanchez does learn them, will he be ridiculously successful? Absolutely. Schotty's biggest problem is he doesn't know how to dial it down. He goes all out when slow and steady should be the pace. When we're parading a high-power offense over the next few years people will appreciate the "risky" plays that always seem to work, and forget all about how they didn't "way back" in 2009.
The biggest problem I have is with the passing game. Especially on 3rd down. He isn't giving Sanchez decent reads. Sanchez is locking on a receiver and doesn't seem to have the opportunity to check it down if necessary. We need to make sure we cover the yardage for a 1st, and need to protect Sanchez for long enough for him to make reads. If our opponent is known for blitzing heavily on third and short or medium situations you need to set up max protection and only send out 2 or 3 receivers and give him time to try to get someone open. He can rocket the ball in if he's got time and a good read but too often he's got really bad reads where maybe there's one receiver that is the main read and the other ones are designed to try to open up space for the one main receiver and when that receiver's not open things turn to shit. We need smarter plays on third down and much much better calls in the red zone. If Shotty can change things up like we did in the Colt game at least (I loved the passing game that game, Sanchez had options and time) then I'm not totally against keeping him on, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be the case in the long term.
i don't mind the seminole or wildcat because even if those plays don't work they usually simply go for no gain which is gonna happen in football. i cannot stand the fact that he calls drive derailing trick plays. sunday we have our first sustained drive going and we run a reverse and lose 14 fucking yards. that shit is unacceptable especially with a struggling rookie qb.
There you go... the Jets had gotten into a rhythm in the running game and on first down Schotty calls that reverse. He killed his own momentum. Schotty, from an overall aspect, has no feel for continuously building successful drives. He kills his own drives.
+1 for example don't use a double reverse when sucessfully driving into colts territory and while gaining momentum offensively for the first time in the game. i do think though that the options are managed sucessfully
I hate those double reverses, if we were to use those trick plays I think a regular reverse would be different, you can never tell when the opportune moment is to use those plays, maybe when the defense is on it's heels, but also depends on what defense we go against, Colts are tooooooooo fast to be caught up in some dumb reversal, a veteran defensive squad doesn't normally fall for plays like that, and IMO we may not even have the personnel, besides Leon and maybe Woodhead, Brad Smith/Clowney wouldn't be bad either, all about timing, I think down the road Shotty will become better at play calling
Let's keep something in mind, had Clowney not tried to make chicken salad out of chicken shit, and ran forward where he had the opportunity rather than running backward with two defenders closing in on him, it would have been a yard or two lost, tops, rather than such a big loss. That was purely stupid play by Clowney. Blaming Schotty for that one is another example of stretching it in an effort to detract from him. I know I sound like a Schottenheimer schill, but really, people need to look at the mistakes the personnel make before they point the finger at BS. If Sanchez doesn't make every effort to look like Vinny, if Braylon hangs on to more passes, if Clowney doesn't act like a bonehead, if Keller actually catches more than 50% of balls in his bread basket, we're all sitting here laughing at the Patriots in our rearview mirror and talking about how Schottenheimer is a damned genius. Yes, I argue the other way as well, that Schotty needs to put his players in the best positions to win, and there are times he doesn't. The problem is, both things are true. 1) He makes some poor in-game decisions. He doesn't stick with what's working until it stops working. That sets players up to have to make tough plays too often. 2) The players fail at execution more often than is acceptable. Schottenheimer is not free from guilt, nor is he nearly as guilty as many people make him out to be. Personally, I'll take a risk-taking offense over the dink and dunk bullshit we've dealt with previously. Unless you think Thomas is a better RB than Curtis Martin and would therefore make us more successful in a dink and dunk offense.
that's my biggest problem. Time and place playcalling. You don't call for a reverse on 1st and 10. You don't call for a hot read, Freeney-gets-a-free-shot-at-Sanchez play...twice. And you don't let a QB with a torn bicep throw 35 times in the Seattle snow. These are common sense situations that someone with little football knowledge wouldn't do, because it doesn't work.... but with schotty "no one is expecting it" Out thinking yourself gets you nowhere, and hopefully removed. His system is not what Rex wants.
