This thread is an epic fail. Jets should be running the ball...8 to 4 on first down plays is pretty perfect.
I hear you, but I get the impression that audibles on first down are rare, and that is what the OP was talking about. After all, we would be talking about something quite different than the OP's point were it the case that the opposing D puts nine in the box, the Jets coaches call in a pass play, and Sanchez audibles at the line for a plain vanilla running play that goes for minimal yardage! Man, were that what was going on, can you imagine the looks we'd be seeing on Ryan's face? Heh. I took your point to be that Sanchez is NOT audibling in the situations the OP is talking about, which has been my impression. Why he doesn't may well have to do with color coding. After all it was on a first down play that Sanchez threw into triple coverage for an interception on the first play of the game. Hey if that was an audible, who could wonder if they told him not to do that anymore?
You understood my point correctly. My response was just to clarify that we have in fact seen him call audibles. It's likely that they don't give him the authority to do that often considering they're trying to cut down on the turnovers. So if a run is called, he doesn't have the authority to audible on that play and there's 9 in the box there's nothing that can be done. When he matures and cuts down on the turnovers he'll likely have more freedom to audible in that situation and it will make our offense much more dangerous. As of now we're probably relying on Schotty guessing the defensive front correctly prior to seeing it most of the time.
I agree. In hindsight, it might have been better to throw one or more times because the Falcons' pass defense is so bad, but we're a run-first team, and if we took care of business at all on special teams, we have a win.
I believe it was last year, or maybe the year before, where they put up an in-game stat that showed that when the Jets went into an I-formation, they ran 100% of the time. That, along with the shotgun formations on 3rd and short and the sparing use of play-action passes and screens, has caused me to lose all confidence in Schottenheimer.
Not saying it is going to be a rousing success, but why not give Woodhead a few more looks with screen plays? Is he really on the roster because of his blocking ability?
Ace formation with running back 7 yards or deeper was a run between the guards 93% of the time. That was the stat that CBS put up on the broadcast. The play that followed was a run up the gut.
Jax had so much success on us getting in a 2 back set and tossing a screen to the RB coming out of the backfired down the side line. I don't see why we can't use TJ or Woodhead like that. Set up like a run -- and get a nice easy pass to the outside. Gotta do something sometimes to stop upfield penetration from defenses. Make them think about the possibility of a screen or a bootleg and you can open so much more up.
I'm not sure what to think of Keller anymore. He's had some flat out horrible games this year, and I'm not even talking about drops or lack of catches. I've noticed countless times this year where he just quits on a route , one of the int's Sanchez threw Sunday was because Keller just flattened out his route. Sure maybe he's not being utlized efficiently, but some of the blame has to go his way as well. People want to kill Shotty for all of the offensive woes , but there's plenty of blame to pass around with simple execution mistakes by the players.
