I think he has the ability to be a true THREAT in the Jets offense if he's given a chance. More than Sowell ever was. He can run with the ball or catch it. Good speed, good hands, good power and he's hungry. He's my pick for NYJ breakout player of the year. Unleash him, Mangini!!!!!
My only issue with Askew is that he's known to need a kick in the arse to stay on track. If Herm had his issues with Askew, imagine what Mangini might think! However, he has the physical tools to be a good fullback, but does he accept the fact that he's a fullback? Dude thinks he's a running back. I actually expect Pociask to give rim a run for the money at FB. This is the year, though, for Askew to either make a move or just be another guy. If he can't take advantage with Sowell gone, he'll never take the next step.
My feelings exactly !!! He has just a good a chance of becoming this years breakout player as he does being a training camp cut. Should be interesting...
Anyone who listened to the Randy Lange interview have any insight on this? I couldnt download the file and I think Askew was discussed.
he was a complete beast in college, played a Mike Alstott role. i remember in 02' when they had him at FB and chris perry at RB. those two saw an absurd amount of carries. and I even remember one game VS Michigan St. Askew saw something like 36 carries. he has true potential, and if he wants to realize it he needs to impress someone on the staff, FAST.
College Career Made 83 catches for 777 yards with six TD in 48 games at Michigan ... Carried the ball 343 times for 1,580 yards and 17 TD ... Named the team’s MVP as a senior and earned All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention ... Finished second on the team with 110 carries for 568 yards and six TD in his final season at Michigan ... Recorded 36 catches, good for fourth on the team, for 280 yards and a score as a junior ... Led the team in rushing with 199 carries for 902 yards and 10 TD as a sophomore ... Caught 26 passes for 236 yards and two TD as a freshman. http://www.nflplayers.com/players/player.aspx?id=34657
I'm sure that sounds odd from a pure Jets fan's perspective, but I'm first and foremost a Michigan guy and I can tell you he was a heck of a player in college. The problem with him, and I knew both he and Hobson were about 1 round reaches at the time, is he's a tweener, not quite a TB but not perfectly suited (and probably not thrilled) for FB. He's a really great receiver (I know we've seen little of that), very nice runner, but doesn't have the overall speed or shiftiness to be a real tailback in the NFL. If anyone remembers Leroy Hoard, played TB/FB at Michigan almost 20 years ago, won a Rose Bowl MVP, and played for the Browns and Vikings for about 8 years, Askew is a similar type. I suspect his blocking has held him back, hopefully he can pick that up because I would think he could be one of the real dangerous running and receiving FBs in the NFL.
I think the only think that held him back was the fact that Herm didnt like to play the young guys in favor of vets past thier prime. What I saw form BJ in past preseasons that he has the size vision and strength to be a very solid FB and conbine that with his speed ( great for a FB) I dont see why he wouldn't start. The other reason why I think he will start is because the staff has shown no intrest in FB's in FA or the draft.
Its not true that Herm didn't play the young Guys.Kerry Rhodes, Eric Coleman, Brown, Adrain Jones, Vilma, are examples of what i mean. Plus Sowell was avery good FB/receiver out of the backfield, plus he played special teams.Askew would have had to show a lot to take the position from Sowell.Remember one year Sowell was the second leading receiver on the team.Sowell was a heck of a player but I definately want to see "Asscue " play. A third round pick at fullback rotting on the bench just isnt going to cut it.
b.j.askew the few times that I have seen askew play at half back.he looked pretty good to me.if the offensive line opens holes for him.I see him picking up good yardage.he rns a 4.6 forty and at 235 lbs he can break tackles.
