That's where it seems Rhodes has gone wrong. Revis is truely head and shoulders above everyone else in the league, short of Scrabble on the Raiders. And even then I think Scrabble doesn't actually shut people down as effectively as Revis. He is excellent in both zone and man coverage, he is a great tackler, and seems to be an excellent attitude to have in the locker room. The Jets ABSOLUTELY need to sign him long-term. He will give us a bonafide star at one position for a LONG time.
Just hope Revis doesn't become like Rhodes once he gets the big payday but Revis just seems like he always want to get better and improve so I don't see him falling into that comfort zone that Kerry has.
He still has three and a quarter seasons left on his first round rookie contract and we are talking about paying him? He signed a 6 year $30 mil contract. Not a bad contract but his value may be close to a 6 yr $45-50 mil but the 6 yr 30 mil contract isn't bad at all. But yeah, maybe in his final year, we can negotiate a deal to keep in NY for another 6 yrs (until he turns 34).
Revis' rookie contract voided the 5th and 6th year after he played in more than 35% of the defensive snaps his rookie year. He can make a total of $16mil in the first four years, and the team has an option to buy back the 5th and 6th years at $5mil for the fifth year and a variable $9-15mil for the 6th year. He is currently playing in the 3rd year of that contract and the Jets cannot franchise him after 2010 due to him reaching the 35% threshold, as per his contract. I'm not sure if the Jets can choose to buy back the 5th year alone and avoid paying Revis what could roughly amount to a franchise tender in 2012 or if they have to buy back both years together. Either way, expect contract talks to heat up before that 4th year expires. Tanny would more-than-likely rather resign Revis to a much longer, friendlier contract.
Cardinal receiver Ftizgerald was asked "Who is the toughest DB in the NFL today?". Eventhough Fitz plays in the NFC, his answer was "Darrelle Revis, and that other guy on the Raiders"
Honestly, the number of "Revis is the man" stories has become overwhelming. Hopefully some other players on the Jets get this kind of recognition some day.
when everyone started with the revis christ crap and the praise revis i didnt quite buy into it yet and wanted to see more before claiming him to be something he may or may not be. needless to say as much as i cant stand that obnoxious name this kid is the best out there right now, he is such a tremendous asset to this team. i am not going to say he is on the level of deion sanders YET but he is definitely in the conversation in my eyes. i have been particularly impressed with his off the field study habits, which just continues to show that the more effort you put in the better you are. its got to be huge on that level to know tendencies... but its gotta be hard to figure them out and remember them for a different wr and qb every week. he is definitely the total package as a shutdown corner.
If I had to give the Next big Jet to someone it would be David Harris, once he gets a few full season under his belt he will be big shit but still Revis is just so much the man great work ethic and it shows on gameday
theres many variables to that debate. the only one I can add is Revis is totally effective in run support and knows how to lay a hit. Sanders spent his whole career shying away from contact.
All hail Revis Christ... For all you pseudo-religious, easily offended types, "christ" means "king", so the translation would be King Revis...Jesus doesn't mind. He's a celestial king, Revis is terrestrial.
its so funny how once the game announcers started making a big deal about revis island every week he gets a fluff piece written about him every day or two. he deserves all the credit he is getting and more, but nobody outside of the fan base even gave a crap until a few weeks ago.
You have to take that one with a grain of salt. Fitz and Revis both played college ball at Pittsburgh. Pro players seem to hold onto to their college bonds pretty tightly.
That TD Moss had against Revis was BS, he couldn't have done anything to stop that pass, that is my only gripe with the article. Otherwise, it's very accurate. Revis is the man.
