Great post...great read..dead on. I read everyones posts after, waiting for the "its a shame it took so long" and not one person wrote that. Thats a good thing. This "finding yourself" for a rookie HC is a tough business. Some coaches just dont have the stomach for it. For instance...Herm let Hackett run the offense and threatened him almost on a weekly basis...yet did nothing about it. Give Rex credit for challenging both Sanchez and Schott. There are many reasons Rex could have hesitated to go after Schott....first one being he took the HC job from him in Schotts eyes. It amazes me how many HC's will allow themselves to sink or swim by the actions of their coaches. Ryan will not. Rhodes? That was too easy....but still...perhaps only a handful of coaches have the balls to pull that trigger. Rex is showing signs of breaking through the rookie wall.
Rookie coach and rookie QB. We knew this was going to be a bit of a rough season going in. Your right about Rex comming along slowly, but making some strides. Vader's post was jsut amazing and dead on. Great job! I can't belive some people out there were calling to blow up the team and rebuild last week. This is a very talented roster on both sides of the ball. We jsut have a bit of growing to do in important positions.
DV, excellent post. I think the most important thing to happen yesterday was not Rhodes' more focused play, but the 'refining' of the offensive philosphy to let Sanchez get his feet back under him and to truly establish the running game. Instead of a myriad of passing plays with an uncreative rushing attack, we saw a ton of creativity on the ground to set up a relatively short passing game. That type of gameplan will lull a defense into playing short and allow the over the top circus stuff that Schotty loves so much to work at key moments in the game.
Did anyone Rex's post game interview? He was obviously lying about what impact that code system had on the play calling. He originally says that his codes had no effect on the play calling, but then one reporter says he saw sets of plays highlighted by different colors on the wrist band Sanchez was wearing. Rex says something like "uhhhh yeah I think he might have a something like that on there."
Interesting. I would guess that dependant on color code is the availalbe audibles for him to switch to at the line. That way he can still react to the defense, but only in a way that the coaching staff has agreed to ahead of time. Its a good system to regin in a young kid who is a bit more of a gunslinger than the caching staff wants him to be at this point.
Does it not seem to make just to much sense. Eric Smith on what appear to be running downs and Kerry Rhodes on passing downs. Smith is not Bob Sanders or Troy but boy he explodes on the ballcarrier. Unless he is complete liability in pass coverage and teams just start to throw on us on 1st down I think this is a great rotation in the making.
So when we have turnovers under Rex's code system they're legitimite excuses. But when we have turnovers and Shotty's running the O its bad playcalling It also helps that our D scored a TD and forced multiple turnovers - which hasn't happened in awhile .
Well those fumbles had nothing to do with playcalling.. rollouts and risky throws often do. So, yeah, sure.
How about the Greene fumble against Mia or the Edwards fumble against the Jags or any of Sanchez' fumbles. My point is if Rex hadn't instituted his color system and our O scored 10 points against Carolina everyone would be saying how shitty our Offensive gameplan was. We score 10 points now and everyone's happy.
Your taking it all wrong, not one person on here or is a knowledgeable fan is happy with the offensive production yesterday. What we are happy about is that Rex Ryan took a big step in the direction of realizing what it takes to be a head coach in the NFL. He is the last line in all decisions and actions. We are happy that Sanchez "managed" the game, we are happy that the running backs got more involved. I believe we are happy that we were able to dictate how the game was going to be played from both sides of the ball. As far as Rhodes, did he get two gift picks he might make even not being benched? Probably. Timing is everything and the timing of the benching and the results on the field coincided so we need to give credit to the decision. We also found out that Eric Smith is a helluva safety against the run and with him , leonard, revis and harris amongst our second and third lines of defense we have lots of sure tacklers.
If this team finishes 8-8, I think you can still call this season a success. There was a great deal of learning that had to occur for both the HC and QB and they'll be well poised for a much better season next year.
