That has to suck for him. And I like the Moose, but that is rough.

I love it....I hope Mussina agonizes for the rest of his natural life over this.

I was about to post that when I saw the title. Mattingly even brought back his jinx in '04.

We made the WS in '81, Mattingly came up in '82
he retired after '95 and we made our next WS in '96
we made the WS in '03 and Mattingly came back to coach in '04
it wasn't the very next year but he left after '07 and we made the WS in '09.

At least Mussina pitched in 2 World Series, mattingly never played or coached in one.

It really sucks, but Donnie just couldn't win. It kind of breaks my heart.

I wish both guys could have won but it wasn't meant to be. At least they get to sleep on a big pile of money.

I don't find Mattingly and Mussina comparable. Mattingly was a Yankee from the start, Mussina just followed the money.

Yeah, all that money probably makes it a lot easier.

As for Giambi, he doesn't belong in this conversation. Mussina was a class act, regardless of following the money. He hung it up when he felt he couldn't get it done anymore (even though he had some left in the tank.) Giambi followed the money, was a cheater, and still doesn't know when to quit.

Both pale compared to Donnie Baseball though. Mattingly played through pain, was always classy, always had time for the media and fans even though he wasn't a spotlight personality, moved to third once when asked, and played first base at a Gold Glove level while being a fixture in the top of the lineup. As far as knowing when to quit, don't forget he told the Yankees to get Tino Martinez and gave up his own shot at a title.

Derek Jeter is by far the most beloved Yankee of this era, but Donnie blew him away in his heyday. All 25,000 of us in the stands were Donnie Baseball fans, right junc?

I think 25,000 is being kind- was it a giveaway day?

Evereyone loved Donnie but he wasn't my favorite player. I was a SS growing up and we had a revolving door at SS so Willie was my favorite since he was also a middle infielder.

I also loved Rickey and Guidry.

It sucks working 9 to 5 in a goddamned office. Mattingly has made millions playing and coaching baseball. Boo fucking hoo. I never won the world series either.
