In 2004 Raiders boss Al Davis decided to build infrastructure. His first two picks were the highest rated T in the draft Robert Gallery (2nd overall). His next pick was the highest rated center in the draft Jake Grove. CNN/SI gaver the Raiders an A- in the draft by taking the best players at their position to fill their biggest need the offensive line. They passed on Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. OAKLAND RAIDERS -- T Robert Gallery is the consensus choice for best player in the draft. Second rounder Jake Grove is the best center. Al Davis loves speed, so he drafted 4.45 FS Stuart Schweigert, who has great ball skills, and WR Carlos Francis, whose hand-timed 4.31 was the best 40 at the Combine. Johnnie Morant, a big, possession wideout, was projected a lot higher than the fifth round, which was where the Raiders got him.
Wait a minute. You are so unoriginal that you have to create a thread based on what another poster said in another thread?? You are pathetic. Bring some original ideas and thoughts to the table, and stop with this trolling. And by the way, I don't know if RaiderJoe is the guy you want to get your "brilliant" ideas from..
Yep, the Raiders, picking #2, passed on Eli Manning, who went #1 overall. Just like the Jets passed on Reggie Bush and Mario Williams. What really stunned me about the draft was how the Redskins passed on Mario when they traded up to #35.
You are avery confused fan, I really didn't want to reply in this pointless thread but I couldn't help myself. You need to go back to the drawing board after making obvious statements like that. BTW just because we drafted 2 linemen does not automatically make us Raiders East.
TMQ on Oakland's drafting: Get off it rajensen, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. There's nothing wrong with valid criticism but most of the time you're really reaching for strings.
This just HAS TO BE your schtick. Incompetent trolling. Maybe you should file for a patent. Because you fail at it with surgical efficiency.
Okay guys, here's my idea, which I know will probably not work anyway. This guy just wants to agitate people and sit back and laugh as he reads the responses. This is demonstrated by his starting of threads with radical (stupid?) viewpoints and then his unexplainable reluctance to respond to ANY criticism. If he really believed half of what he said he would at least try to respond. So, the only thing that you can do when dealing with an attention-seeking troll like this is just not read his posts, and not respond. I'm adding him to my ignore list now, and I recommend that you all do too. Otherwise, there will be no end to these useless threads.
The Raiders fault was not drafting those particular players. The reason the Raiders have failed the last couple of years is because they completely disregarded their front seven, despite spending an inordinate amount of money and, in that case, draft picks on offense when they were consistently a top ten unit. -X-
I think it's funny that people consider Al Davis to be so crazy that comparing Tannenbaum to him is conisdered trolling
I always liked the way Al Davis put together a football team. The salary cap era may have hamstrung him a bit but Al knows how to build a winning team and always did. I think if you put Al Davis with a guy like Tanny who knows what the salary cap is all about the Raiders would have a few more SB wins. Nice positive post for a change Raj! Good to see you're finally getting behind the new front office.
Sooo b/c 2 years ago the Raiders took an OL w/ their first 2 picks, and we did the same thing this year, somehow we are copying/emulating the Raiders?? Ever think that maybe both or one of the teams went BPA, and that's just how the board fell?? Apparently not.
Have to admit I don't mind rajensen's posts: at least they provide a different angle on things, and he/she certainly knows how to get a converstion going. I don't think you can compare Robert Gallery and D'Brickshaw Ferguson....for one thing, Gallery is a true giant, who has the turning speed of an aircraft carrier: he simply isn't equipped to cope against fast players especially the DE's they seem to be producing in the NFL now. Gallery is oversize for an NFL tackle, and frankly always has been. D'Brick is the opposite....if anything he is slightly undersize, and has superb quick feet, and technically is a standout for a tackle. I think that it is clear that Gallery got by in college with his behemothic size; that isn't enough in the NFL. D'Brick is nearly the perfect model for a LT in today's game, big, but not oversize, mobile, with superb technique; Gallery is in many ways a relic of a forgotten game that died some years ago. Gallery has also been played out of position; he's playing RT, and not all that successfully: he may well get a shot at LT this coming season, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the challenge. I wouldn't call Gallery a bust at this stage until he gets a fair run at LT, he is close though given how high he went in the 2004 draft. D'Brick, unlike Gallery, will start at LT from day one....and I think from day one he will prove successful simply because he is everything a modern day tackle should be. He may make a few mistakes in his early games, but I think by the end of the season Jets fans will be very pleased with his pick at no. 4. The only link one could possibly find with D'Brick and Gallery is that at times they may be a bit too passive in their role: Gallery certainly is, and the same criticism was aimed at D'Brick. I think, though, that some of the combine workouts dispelled some of this negativity around D'Brick: frankly in his workouts, just as he had been through the previous season, he was from all reports stunning in nuetralizing the defensive threat. You seem to be saying Jake Grove is a bust? Has he even started at centre for the Raiders? I don't know....he looks like he's done alright to me. You have to remember the Raiders O Line is a massive one and massively immobile: I'd be careful to label a player on the basis of the deficiencies of his teammates or the scheme run by the coach.
What is so bad about the original post? BTW, Oakland didn't pass on Eli Manning he was already off the board when they picked.
