There's a thread about whether we would want Charlie Weis in some sort of assistant/OC capacity, and it also looks like Al Groh will be on the market. Is he a guy that we would want to bring back in as a position coach (assuming Rex doesn't need a DC)?

of course. al groh was arguably the greatest coach in new york jets history. i also think we should trade darrelle revis for eric mangini and a pack of twinkies.

As a LB's or D-line coach I would. He was a good position coach on Parcell's staff and got a lot out of Mo and Marvin, et all. If it got rid of Sutton I'd sign up for that.

Whoever is brought in to run the Jets next should make his own decisions about who is on the staff. It's Redskins redux to have decisions about the staff made by anybody but the owner, in hiring the GM, and then the GM for the coach, and then the coach for his staff.

The Jets have this terrible habit of mixing and matching administrations, with the net effect that nobody has the people he really wants in all the positions he should. I've gone on record as saying that there are a few people, like Mike Westhoff, who are so good at doing what they do that they should be retained as a priority even while the rest of the structure was changing around them. I was wrong on this. I think the Jets would be doing better right now if Rex Ryan had had the chance to choose his staff whole, instead of having to accept Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator, Mike Westhoff as ST coach, Bill Callahan as offensive line coach, etc. No rookie head coach should have competing agendas sitting on his staff when he really needs to be figuring out how to run the show. There's no way that Rex Ryan's hand-chosen offensive coordinator would be worrying about whether he was finally going to get that head coaching gig next year and making some decisions based on that.

Look at what has happened to the Ravens this year when Ryan left for NY. Harbaugh got one good year out of his defense and then Ryan is gone and Harbaugh is looking at a complete rebuild on that side of the ball.

The Jets haven't even gotten the one good year out of the offense, and next season they'll have Sanchez starting over again in a new system if Schottenheimer is gone. Really they should have brought the new OC in this year so that he, Ryan and Sanchez would all be on the same page for the first two years of Ryan and Sanchez's careers. Doing it the way they have done it just split the middle to no good advantage, and it weakened Ryan in the overall structure when he in fact need to be strengthened.

Yes, we should pay him just to make phone calls to Laveranues Coles in the middle of the night to tell him that he's one drop away from being back in Tallahassee, shoplifting clothes with Peter Warrick.

I agree with what you are saying. The problem is as soon a coordinator gets to be good he is a candidate for the next HC job. Schotty was a candidate after only one season. You are right when you said that he has been making decisions based on getting a HC job next year. Unfortunately for him and the Jets they have backfired. Like the first pass of last week's game.

I wouldnt touch Weiss or Groh, it reeks too much of our past.... If you guys want to replace Schotty why not promote callahan or someone from within who is capable...

Why would we bring him in? RR and Pettine spearhead the defense.... We could, however, use a new offensive coordinator........

Callahan is more capable then Weis? Since when? Both Groh and Weis were on the staff of the best Jets team since they won it all in 69. I wouldn't mind reeking like that past.

I would take Weis back in a heartbeat, who was the best Jets OC of my lifetime and was a big part of developing possibly the best QB of all time. I still have a sour taste in my mouth about the way the Groh era ended but is there really any doubt that he would be an upgrade over Sutton as LB coach?

The guy wore the same sweatshirt all season (I think) so he brings style points.

This makes no sense. Don't the jets have a full defensive staff?

I wouldn't mind seeing what Al Groh could do with our linebackers.

As a LB coach, nothing more. But it's not going to happen.

edit: when Callahan got fired at Nebraska, I believe the poll numbers would have looked similar as to wanting him here as well. So I voted yes.
