Jets | QB spot up for grabs Fri, 5 May 2006 09:37:58 -0700 NewYorkJets.com reports New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has declared the race for team's starting quarterback position wide open. "Ultimately Chad Pennington could play, Patrick Ramsey could play, Brooks Bollinger, (Kliff) Kingsbury could play, a draft pick could play. Competition will put the best player on the team," said Tannenbaum. the chad pennington era is (officially) "officially over" IMO. thanks and have a great day
Based on the wording of that quote, I'd say either Bollinger or Kingsbury is going to be cut, Pennington is the starter unless he isn't at 100%, Ramsey is the #2, and Clemens is the #4. Basically, nothing new here.
Kliff could not win the starting job in Cologne with NFLE so I think the last Jets patch he will wear will be on his Centurions Uniform. Brooks deserves a shot but I think he is done as well.
thanks, i think im going to agree with you. we have plenty of qbs on the roster for a reason, especially counting brad smith. i would rather watch a healthy brad smith try to throw for us then a hurting pennington. but anyways all this just seems to show a complete lack of fatih in penningtons ability to return, which is smart because nothing is a sure thing so we might as well have as many options as we can ready if(and im sure this is the case) pennington does not show the same starting quality he once had.
I don't see that insinuation at all. "Competition will puit the best player.." seems to indicate that CP is not the favorite to start...
one of the draft picks obviously refers to Clemens and Brad Smith, who interestingly enough chose #16 as his uniform #...
I wouldn't read too much into that phrase, it's been used in regards to every position. I just think it's a bit telling that he lists the QB options in that order and groups Bollinger and Kingsbury together. Of course it could mean nothing at all, but what else is there left to do until camp starts, except for speculate?
If the position is truly open and each QB gets a fair shot, we could easily have a rookie QB starting. 1. Chad will not be a 100%, and he should not start until he is. 2. All the QBs have to learn a new system. 3. Ramsey and Pennington are both slow at learning offenses. Same number of reps could equal rookie starter.
I believe that Brooks is no longer eligible for the practice squad due to his experience. I'm sure he can find a job as a #3 QB. He didn't win games for the JETS, but given the shit he had to work with, he did fine as the 4th QB coming off the bench (when Herm let him play). While I wouldn't want him running the show, he could've been worse given the circumstances and expectations. If Pennington is on the IR (PUP, whatever) I imagine Brooks will stay with the JETS.
I would have to disagree with your 3rd comment. I can't speak for Ramsey, but Pennington busts his ass to learn the offense every year and does just that. He just hasn't been healthy to prove it.
The biggest problem with Chad is he thinks too much. He over thinks everything. He does bust his ass to learn it but it takes forever for him to adjust and get the feel for it. Knowing a play book and executing the plays are two different things.
You are correct...I remeber an article on Pennington saying he brought his playbook and studied it every day on his honeymoon:up:
I would be really suprised if Penny doesn't start the year on the PUP list. Ramsey the starter and Bollinger the back up to start the season..
