there are reasons he isnt playing, i dont know them and neither do you. you may THINK that you know exactly what he is and or isnt but the fact you havent seen him this year probably means you havent seen very much of him ever. i just dont understand the fascination with guys that are unknowns. just different doesnt always mean better, there are usually reasons why the rookie isnt playing. like there are others who are better than him. that was the point that i was trying to make... if he were good enough or better than the guys who are playing they would obviously not be scared to play him. the fact that he is not playing tells me he isnt up to snuff at this point and the guys who are playing are more capable than he. that and the fact he has been injured.
yea we pay our coaches for a reason. Just because he was good in college and good on 7 carries doesnt make him great. Im perfectly happy with LW and TJ. Im happier seeing threads bashing on our old RB then why is greene getting so many carries hes terrible. Let the rookie learn hes probably not going to play much til next year or atleast more towards the end of the season.
When I saw Greene in Monday Night I got pissed. It makes no sense to use him when TJ and Leon were both doing well.
Shonn Greene played during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the Saints game, that wasn't garbage time. Neither was it garbage time when he got carries against the Phins. I don't know where you got that idea from. Fact is, Shonn Greene had 3 carries in the 3rd quarter against the Saints and by that third carry, he was the leading rushing RB on the team. His injuries are a concern, but he played through the first 2 preseason games with that same ankle injury. It's heartening to know that he can play through that type of stuff. Young backs, no matter where they are drafted, prove their immediate worth by how they play when they are dinged up. Jones is an all-around back, but his importance to this team is dwindling quickly with Leon getting much better pass blocking and getting the majority of carries on 3rd downs. I don't think people are clamoring for Greene - I think they want to see this kid that we traded up in the third round for because he's already showed a ton of potential. I think many want to see him because we need to know what we have in him since TJ is most likely going to be wearing a different uniform in 2010. I think the problem with this thinking about 'looks' is that we haven't had a dynamic full-time runningback for a while and we have forgotten what it's like to be able to depend on the run when the passing game is struggling. Our run-blocking is definitely suffering, but when Sanchez fumbled that ball in the EZ against the Saints, they inserted Greene immediately and he provided a spark. The run-blocking got more confident and TJ started actually producing. If we can't rely on a runner to fight for yardage in the early downs, Sanchez is going to end up throwing the game away some more like he did against the Saints. 'Looking' good against shitty teams is only going to buy this team more of TJ shuffling his feet 2 weeks from now against the Phins again; if we are truly going to let Greene get his feet wet, it probably should be against opponents that can't exploit our weaknesses in other areas like the Bills and the Raiders, when we have less to lose by putting him on the field. Having a veteran starting runningback who can block and catch and doesn't fumble is nice. But if he isn't going to run with any fire, if he isn't going to fight for yardage to help take pressure off that rookie QB on later downs, if he's only going to scrape for the extra yard when it will result in him meeting TD incentives, what's the point?
All the more reason to see Greene in the game. The guy runs through people. TJ trips over the white line! Lets face it, TJ is not getting a new contract from us after this year unless he signs for a fraction of his salary. We need to see if what we have in Greene is a legit #1 back to run the rock next year when TJ is gone.
The fascination is that we traded up to get this guy in a draft where we had no picks to begin with, which leads me to believe our CS/FO thought this kid was a stud. Then we have a couple of games where our rushing game looks anenic and we don't even see if this kid can inject some spark into the game. I understand the backup QB is always the most popular guy mentality but with TJ not getting a new deal next season we need to see what this kids all about. He's built for the type of offense we were supposedly going to be, smash mouth, but it seems like somebody's holding him back, and for what? RB is not a QB. You don't sit and learn by watching. You get in there and run the rock!
When I see Greene run, he runs to the hole and tries to force his way through with some power and speed. When I see Thomas Jones run, he sits back and waits for the blocking to develop and then tries to take the path of least resistance for a 1-2 yard gain. Faneca has not been at the top of his game and he is just not getting the push that someone with Jones' running style is going to require. The only time that I see Jones play with any voracity is when he's within 5 yards of the opponent's goal line. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the game is played well away from there. Based on this, I would much rather see Greene getting the carriers early on. This doesn't mean I think Jones is useless, just not the best option to start drives.Make Leon and Greene as the 1 and 2 RBs(don't really care what order) to push the ball down to the GL and then give the ball to Jones. It's in the hands of the veteran. He runs hard in that situation, and he knows how to not fumble.
Totally agree. And for that matter Leon isn't a Pro-Bowl running back, he's a PB kick returner. Greene may have the same non-success that TJ is having if he got 10 or so carries a game, but who the fuck knows? Unless he's a fumbling machine he can't be any worse...
I'm surprised we haven't seen more of Greene as well. From the limited action he has had he looks good and is hitting the holes with determination and conviction. Unfortunately the same can't be said for TJ who is definetly underachieving. Washington is playing well but isn't an every down back being more of a "specialty" guy. I think if TJ dosn't step it up in the next few games and start performing the way he's expected to Green will definitely start to see some more reps in the backfield. That being said I hope TJ decides to man up and returns to top form, I'm still backing him but my patience is wearing thin.
It would be nice to see at least one game this year where Leon is the feature back and Jones is the change of pace. There still isn't any evidence that LW can't handle the load and it might do TJ well to be humbled a bit by not getting the majority of the carries. Leon has done nothing to show that he isn't worthy of getting even more touches than he is getting now and I hope that the gameplan will reflect that on Sunday. That said, if Greene is healthy, I hope he sees the field more also. It can only be a positive to have three capable backs to put into the game rather than just two. Regardless of how you feel about TJ I don't know how you wouldn't want to see more of what Shonn Greene can do at this point. We reallly do need a spark on offense.
Fancea is definitely slipping. Its time for Green to take away some of TJ's carries. He gets not yardage after being hit. Its either that or Leon gets 3/4 of them
