A good write-up of a littl eknown punter who played for a horrible team. THOMAS MORSTEAD, SMU, 6-4, 215, 4.90 As you can see by his projected 40-time this guy is actually an athlete. He punted 59 times during the Mustangs' one-win 2008 season. His 41.8 per punt average for the year was his lowest number for his career. But further scrutiny reveals something very desirable in the NFL: 20 of those 59 punts were placed inside the opponents 20 yard-line. Only 3 of his punts this season were touchbacks. He is scheduled to punt in the Shrine Game in Houston this coming January. His career punting average is 43.4. Projected round 5-6 ________ Now I am one who does not normally like to use draft picks on kicker or punters but he's worth a look for a 6th round pick.
Hodges is the man, he had like a 50+ average last week, including a solid punt outta our endzone....why get rid of the guy....
Let's trade up in the 1st round and grab this guy before the PATS get him!!!!!!!!!!!11!!1 No, but serious, lets keep Hodges.
I brought this old thread back up because The Saints drafted Morstead in the 5th round last year and as a Saints Fan. I am like "what the Fu$K!, a punter in the 5th? Our defense was giving up 30 points a game last year and we waste a 5th on a punter. Keep in mind we did not have a 2nd or a 4th pick either. This kid was worth every bit of a 5th. I have been seriously eating crow on this kid. He has been more than a beast. The Jets return game scared the Sh&t out of me and Morstead just took it out of play. Made it a complete non factor. I completely underrated the Jets defense yesterday, I knew they were good, but not that good. Sanchez had a rookie day and Greg Williams has so far brought the Saints D up ten notches. The Jets are going to win a bunch more games, lets Hope The Saints can Take care of the Giants, Pats, and Dolphins! Also, Tell the rookie QB to quit chop blocking players, he will not like the nickname he has earned...'Dirty' Sanchez! Good Luck the rest of the year! Geaux Saints!
the scouting report above didn't mention he was a kickoff specialist too. We drafted a kicker in the 2nd round who was lucky to get it inside the 10...just saying.
That is because Morstead Never kicked off at SMU, not once in 4 years. Not since high school. Our regular kicker Hartley got suspended for 4 games, (which is why we brought in 50 yr old Carney, which is why we went for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking a 47 yd FG), Hartley was doing pretty good on kickoffs to the 5 yd line and in the end zone some. If Hartley hadn't got suspended we wouldn't have known the kickoff leg that Morstead has. When Hartley got suspended, coach says to Morstead give it a try. Payton knew that Carney couldn't do it anymore. You guys saw the end result. The kid has a super leg!
He does. Leon Washington couldn't do anything all game and we were pinned at the 20 which also didn't help matters We could use an upgrade at punter....Feely though our FG kicker is pretty good and usually kicks it into the endzone
Holy crap, a visiting Saints fan used the search function. We have regular posters here who can't seem to figure out how to do so after years of posting. Glad to have you, mc4!
Come on Man! 4 games into the season and we are talking about a punter for next season Your kidding right?!?
I don't see why teams don't find soccer players with giant legs who can give you a touchback every time and sign him as a KOS. The gain you get from pinning your opponent at their own 20 to start every drive is undoubtedly worth the roster spot.
LOL. I think I got smacked down once or twice by more senior members of Saints report for not searching before posting. I am a Trained Troll!! I thought it was funny that this thread had someone suggesting that the Jets draft Morstead in the 6th.......MMMMM......Maybe Sean Payton was browsing this thread and said. "We better take him in the 5th because the Jets will get him in the 6th"!!
You guys have Weatherford right? He was our punter 2 years ago. I don't remember him being bad. Above average most games for us.
