Well, as the author states, this was obvious. Because the league was hungry for black coaching hires heaps of undue praise were heaped on Crennel, a longtime assistant who was deserving of at least a shot, in the eyes of many. Did anyone actually think Belichick would leave any aspect of the defense to ANYONE else? Likewise, because Mangini's personality, or lack thereof, seemed like a carbon copy of Belichick the Jets simply assumed that he could turn this team into a winner. To be fair though, let's not forget who was doing the hiring. Mr T, who is himself a product of the Parcells/Belichick coaching tree. -X-
I think it is a bit to early to be ruling that Mangini is the worst hire in Browns history. That is a bit much. He did a fairly decent job here, I thought he helped build a very solid foundation here before he was canned. Obviously a lot of the pieces he implemented here are not doing to bad, 3-0 with a few new pieces from Ryan, is kinda good. Mangini is working with a lot less then he even had to start out with here in NY. We all know Herm drove this team into the ground before Mangini took over, but he was able to make the team respectable. I really think he has even less to work with now in Cleveland. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is a great coach either, as far as execution on the field, etc.. I did think he was alright with helping build a team up from scratch. He had a decent record here in NY too, so... Take it for what it is.
It's definitely a bit early, but I think the team achieving under Ryan is more an indictment of Mangini than anything else. I just think he ran a very safe, very vanilla defense/offense and the hire is so terrible because he never had time to learn why that doesn't work. He clearly didn't learn anything about player and media relations, and I think that's something that's a lot of times integral to these guys before they get their second go. -X-
And like Mangini, changed the QB except tthe Bucs went younger instead of with the experience. Wonder how many of the whining Bucs fans like Gruden now?
Actually Cameron had a terrible pedigree for a resume. He was a phemonimal offensive coordinator, but he was a terrible talent evaluator. As a head coach in the college level he was terrible, he did not know how to recruit, which translates into poor drafting, which happened in his only draft. He had almost no knowledge of how to coach defense. Look up his head coaching career, at the college level he couldn't even win. He was 18-37, why would this make anyone believe that he could be a head coach in the NFL. I stand by it. Worst coaching hire.
I was watching Mike & Mike this morning & Greenie called Mangini the worse coach in history & really threw him under the bus. I thought that was rather comical since previous years Greenie was swinging from his nuts like he belonged there. What a tool.
the whole time i am reading i am thinking... kotite, kotite, kotite.... then the guys that he mentions and i say kotite has to be on here. its eerily similar and sucks tremendously that the jets have to be mired in 2 of the worst coaches ever.
Mangini was bad okay but he CANNOT be compared to Rich Kotite. We said this before but Kotite called for a 2 point conversion in a game down 11 I think against Chicago because it was raining and his chart got smeared and didn't know what to do.
Agreed. As head coaches go, Mangini is not even on the same planet of suck as Kotite. Mangini was bad (as he's demonstarting he still is) and I'm obviously glad he's gone, but putting him in the same breath as Kotite is like comparing a giant barrel of pig-shit to...well...Rich Kotite. I'd give the barrel the reigns to my team before "The K Word".
No. No. No. Eric Manidiot deserves to be mentioned with Kotite among the all-time NFL coach turds. Kotite actually won a playoff game as a head coach. Manmoron had loads of moronic moments in 2007 and 2008. Look at the asinine decisions he made at the end of the 1st half vs the Giants in 2007 and in the second half vs Cincinnati in 2007. The guy flat out sucks.
Marion Campbell should be considered here. He went 6-19 as Falcons head coach from 1974-76. He was fired after only five games in 1976. He followed Dick Vermeil in Philadelphia. Campbell had a mark of 17-29-1 with the Eagles from 1983-85. He was fired after 15 games in 1985. At this point, hadn't the NFL seen enough of Campbell as a head coach? No. The Falcons once again hired Campbell as their head coach. He went 11-32 with them from 1987-89. He was fired after 12 games in 1989. 34 wins, 80 losses, 1 tie 3 head coaching jobs, fired 3 times during a season
Also, if wondering, Campbell holds the dubious distinction of most games under .500 (46) as an NFL head coach. John McKay is 2nd on the list at -44. At least he has somewhat of an excuse. He was the original head coach of the hapless Buccaneers back before free agency. McKay was able to reach the NFC Championship Game with the Buccaneers, so he had that going for him, which is nice.
Mangini isn't even the Jets worst coach, much less the league's. He isn't even the Jets worst hire, though he may have been the worst of the year considering that he was fired for his incompetence, then hired by the team that just fired HIS mentor for the same reason. Kotite was prolly the Jets worst coach, may be the worst hire considering he left philly in shame. Beli was a terrible hire, though he made sense at the time. So was Holtz. He wins worst hire of the offseason, but that's all for now.
