so he's still not confortable... its all mental. ugh. here's to next year. How about the Lendale TD where Roos single-handedly sealed him off with ease? It was childs play.... eh, enough. Good for VG for getting a game ball. Go get a sack.
So 6 guys got game balls. If nobody who started played on special teams, that would mean that 1 in every 5.5 players got a game ball, and Vernon got his after someone else had already got it. He made a TD saving tackle, but he was backpedaling due to being pushed down the field when Johnson passed him. He then flipped his hips and turned his back to the blocker who, by rule, had to disengage him at that point. Johnson was then slowed down by Lowery or Revis or someone who missed a tackle, and Gholston dove like Raiden from Mortal Kombat when you press back, back, forward to make the tackle. The fact is that when you have an offensive lineman bearing down on you, there's very little thinking to be done. Your job is to shed the block. He doesn't do it. Bart Scott jams the lineman or rips past him and finds the ball. Gholston peeks over the lineman's shoulder looking for the ball while being pushed away from it, hoping another player tackles him.
The only reason why it's worth mentioning is because one of VG's biggest problems is his inability to finish off plays. How many times have we seen him slow up when the play isn't coming directly toward him and failing to pursue until the tackle? He kept pursuing on that play even though it appeared someone else had the tackle made, and as a result he prevented a TD. It's a good step, albeit one that should have been unnecessary to begin with.
He was double teamed on the play. The guy made a hell of an effort to finish the play and save a TD. Amazing, he does something positive and all everyone wants to do is bitch.
Ball redistribution...........my wife yells at me for doing that when I'm bored in public. Sometimes you just have to make a shift.
I rewatched the game. I would say when the ghost was on the field it was primarily as a DE in the 4-3, although he played DE in a 3-4 set as well. I can think of one instant when he just didn't hustle at all...I believe it was within last 2 minutes of the 2nd Q. At other times he was simply manhandled. On plays where he could have made an impact, he was just a second too late. I believe I noticed this on quite a few passing downs. His play vs the run was really uneventful except for the tackle on Johnson. Overall, he still has a LONG way to go.
I didn't see a double team, and I rewound to watch it again because I couldn't believe number 50 made the play. Think about the context in which he did something positive man. I am glad he made that tackle of course, but it a ways down the field from the line of scrimmage. I want the guy to develop and will stick with him but I am also getting sick of his good plays being tackles made after 20 yard gains. When will he get a TFL? Or better yet, when will he knock an offensive lineman on his butt when blitzing? The guy ran like a 4.59 and had around 30 bench reps at the combine. He should be very powerful, but we're not seeing it. He also plays passively. When a guy is almost down, he lets the weight and momentum of his teammates take the ball carrier down instead of jumping in and helping and getting an extra shot in on the opponent. Sorry, but I don't like it.
I don't know how you didn't see it, especially if you rewound it. Rewind again. Gholston getting double teamed: Johnson made a great cut here after baiting the entire defense, including Gholston, inside. After Gholston realized Johnson made the cut he was still held by one of the guys double teaming him. The point is he made an impact play in the game. If he doesn't make that tackle Johnson ties the game and the Jets might not win. No one is saying he's doing great.
I'm very encouraged by the mindset and actions shown by Rex Ryan. If he felt that Gholston deserved some recognition then in his scheme that's what he should do. The days of tight lipped, you screwed up so go sit in the corner are thankfully over. The only issue I would take with the giving back of the game ball may not be actually termed a "game ball". For example if a player makes the first touchdown of his career and keeps the ball, I don't think the coach should take that ball away from him even if they end up calling it a game ball and he later receives recognition from the league.
when we pressured brady all afternoon, "sacks are overrated, and this is why". yet "vernon needs to get a sack". i'm just not following. he's making improvements, and as evident by Rex, and those screenies he's making plays. sure he's not a 100% impact player. he saw little action last year, and he's in a system that should help him. why can't we just allow him to progress instead of handing down the sentence now?
I saw Vernon Gholston drive some tackles into Kerry Collins' personal bubble on a few pass plays during four man rushes. That's all I want from him: generate pocket pressure in non-blitz situations. I could give a shit about sacks. Vernhaters are the new darksiders.
Like Ive said before he is like the Arod of this team, it doesnt matter what he does he will never be good enough. Im not comparing talent just the overall fan psychology surrounding this guy. As some have said before Manjerkoff pretty much benched him, and hes younger than Shonn Greene, give him some time, im sure by week 17 he will be more than adequate, and even have a shot at fulfilling his #1 pick in a year or two, just like Pace did when he was labeled bust his first 3 seasons
^ It's because people always need someone to bitch about. First, it was Chad. Then he was let go. Then it was Mangini. Then he was fired. Now, it's Gholston's turn.
