Eric smith has the same birthday as i do hahaha... Hopefully those injuries were do to bad luck, and not from being injury prone.

Here's the real reason Schlegel was picked, according to the Star-Ledger this morning:

LB Anthony Schlegel, a third-round pick, owes teammate A.J. Hawks the beverage of his choice. It was while watching film of Hawk that the Jets spotted Schlegel, who hunts wild boar in his spare time.

"Schlegel kept showing up and showing up," Mangini said. "It's something when you go to watch one player and the other guy keeps making tackles. This is a guy that hunts wild boar with a knife to give you an idea of the toughness this guy has. He's an impressive guy. He's very likable and you want to play with a guy like that."

Just my opinion...But, doesn't Schlegel remind you of Vrabel with the Pats? Both LBs, both from Ohio, etc. Perhaps he would work out for us in the same mold, I'd love that, Vrabel is a good player!

Ohio State had a terrific defense and has a great program and I'm sure Mangini/Tannenbaum consulted them about Schlegel when they were looking at Hawk before the draft. Critics are knocking taking Schlegel because he was somewhat off the radar, but it sounds like he's got great potential. I hope he turns out to be the next Vrabel.

Shoot, if he turned out to be Ted Johnson, we just got the biggest steal of the draft! However, hopefully he stays healthier than Teddy did.

I just hope Schlegel turns out like the guy from USC the year before, Tatupu. Maybe Vilma's speed and his instincts will be enough for him to compensate for his utter lack of athleticism. I certainly like his intensity, but I just wish he was a tad more athletic. I feel like I'll be watching a lot of guys allude his grasp, a la Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones the twilight years.

This is the analysis from NFL.com

People have been talking about Mangini wanting "Mangini" type guys. I belive that this was one thing that they were looking for in players.
Players who overacheive and can stand up to the other players that may be dogging it.
Last year, Vilma got punched out by Reed because he was the only one who had the balls to tell Reed to stop getting knocked around. Now you have 2 guys showing the D how it needs to be done. Things like this are infectous. They more players start having accountability for their jobs, performance and the team the better.

Accountability, something sorely missing in the last regime. It would be a pleasant addition to this team....

My God... you guys don't know how on-target this is. "Accountability!" Edwards' idea of accountability was showing up in the weight room for coffee at 6am. As long as you did that, everything was cool.

I posted this in a different thread. But I saw Schlegel play vs. ND in 2002 when he was still at the Air Force Academy. ND was in the midst of its run in Willingham's first year (before they got slapped by BC at home in their green jerseys, but that's another issue). Anyway, Schlegel must have made every tackle that game for the AFA. They were announcing his name so often that the ND section started to chanting "Schlegel" after his name was continually announced over the PA.

I kind of followed him thereafter and was surprised when he transfered to The Ohio State University. But if you're a captain as a sophmore at one of the academies, you obviously must know what the hell you are doing as a vocal leader and a leader by example.

I'm not going to equate him to Kyle Clifton, but he was a guy who didn't have all the measurables coming out of college either. But I think he's still the all-time tackles leader for the Jets.

Obviously a highlight reel but he plays fast. Seems very quick. Could definitely see him starting and seems like he might be able to rush the QB a bit. Is he our Zach Thomas?

I don't know about all that but I'm glad Mangini spotted him making a lot of tackles in that game film of Hawk's. This guy sounds like a real football player, just what we're looking for. Could be the steal of our 2006 draft.

I read that it was AJ Hawk who turned Tangini and Co. onto Schlegel when they went to interview him, and the more they watched em the more they liked em.
