Look we filled several need areas yesterday namely O line and a 3rd down RB. We still have problems with the DL and LB and a playmaker on offense. One draft wasn't enough to get it done but looking to 07' you have to be optimistic that things will turn around rather nicely. What's your opinion will the 07' draft be the stepping stone to a playoff run in 07' :breakdance:
Yeah it should be. The Jets fixed the line this year. They may have fixed QB as well (or it may not need fixing, we'll see how Chad does in 2007 behind the first really good offensive line since 2002.) That leaves RB and NT as glaring questions moving forward. If they answer those questions somehow this year they could well be in the playoffs in 2006. But if not they'll be looking to fix them in 2007 and make the second step back from oblivion.
I think the Jets dont have much to worry about at the QB position anymore...sure we may not have a standout QB and a clearcut starter at this point ( all pending on chad's are) but at least we have fallback options that dont seem to hav the potential to be as miserable as last years QB dibacle...granted chad arm is strong, he will be strong...if not then no worries...no more "hinging on chad's arm" we got Ramsey & Clemmons
Actually we might have QB and possibly Rb fixed (for at least one season). newest problems is getting someone to replace John Abraham, we need a hype man to pump up that D besides Vilma
Nicely said Br4dw, I agree 100%. Lets just see what pans out for this year. Although we have not snaped a ball as a team yet I have to say I like the way this team is moving.
I think that hype man will be the head coach. Every guy playing smart football and helping to raise each others game
What will pre season prove in your mind when normally those games are played at 1/4 regular game speed & most of the players playing that pre season game will be cut?
We drafted about four of those, my brother. But you're right, we've got to find a replacement for Abe next year.
Of COURSE it's a 2 year plan! Anyone who thought the Jets new FO could turn it around in one year was still drinking Herm's coolaide! First, you build the "core" of the team, the lines. With our two #1 picks the new FO got a franchise LT and a franchise C! That's some start to building the core! The move that had me questionning them was the trade down in round #2 with Washington. But, when I found out they received a #2 in 2007, I understood! All the talk about quarterbacks - and now we have a #1 and two #2's for next year...and have some chips to try and trade to get Brady Quinn! Two start Olinemen and Quinn? Yes, this is a two year plan...
When all of the starters are out and the guys that are playing live and die with every play, I think we can get an idea of what kind of players we have.
you almost had a perfect post until you suggested we try to package picks next year for brady quinn.....you got your qb this year my friend...they did not pick clemens hoping he can someday be a solid back-up....theyre hoping hes the starting qb of this team in 07
If They Think Clemons Is The Future, Then They Are Crazy. They Guy Is Listedv At 6ft 1, Which Means He's Probably 5ft 11. I See A Lot Of Interceptions For Offensive Linemen, In The Afc East!!
Ill be honest, I dont feel like were as far behind as a lot of people here like to think. I know we just had a terrible season. But it had a lot more to do with injuries than it had to do with overall talent level. Prior to last years injury breakdown, we had one real weakness on the team, and that was the offensive line, a problem which became way worse once the injuries started to hit. This weekend, I feel like that unit got turned around entirely. Ferguson will likely be under contract for the next 6 years, Mangold for 4 or 5, Moore is under contract until 09 I believe, Jones is a good young player(hes gonna need to bulk up a bit to excel on the right side, but hes got the talent to get it done), and Kendall is a very solid guard, he can play the next 2 years at a high level at least. This wasnt a quick fix, we added two players who ensure that this unit will stay competitive for a while. But to say taht we can build around them implies that theres still building to be done, and I dont necessarily think that there is. Teague and Clement provide some depth. Might take some time for Ferguson, Mangold and Jones to unlock all their potential, but at this moment, I feel like all 3 can go into a game and play well. There isnt anything else I feel bad about. At wide receiver, I think Coles doesnt get enough credit, he can be a big part of this offense for a few years still. Between McCareins and Cotchery, somebodys going to have to step up to be the regular on the other side of the field. This is definetely a position where we could stand to add some top level, round one-type talent in the next two years, but as far as the 06 outlook, I dont see this as a weakness. Same can be said for halfback and tight end; Curtis has another year or two left, hell look a lot better with an improved line, and Houston and Washington can make contributions. At TE, Baker showed potential to be a quality starter before he got hurt last year; again, both positions where we could definetely add talent in the next two or three years, but where what we have right now is enough to compete. As for quarterback, between Pennington and Clemons weve got our future starters already on board. I think this situation will work itself out. Penningtons already up to NFL speed, if he can get over his injury problems then hes the guy, if not Clemons will see the field sooner rather than later. Defensively, I think the idea of a pass rusher to replace John Abe is getting too much play. A, I think Shaun Ellis will benefit both from Manginis new scheme and the new emphasis on conditioning and weight training (I recall hearing that he was overweight last season). B, Mangini will use linebackers to generate a pass rush. Thats how the Patriots did it. Weve got a TON of linebackers now, not to mention Bryan Thomas is being moved out there. Between Hobson, Barton, Vilma, Schlegel, and potentially Bryan Thomas, youve got enough guys with some ability to get to the quarterback. As for nose tackle, I think the fact that we didnt add anybody in free agency and nobody in the draft until the seventh round indicates that Mangini wants to give Pouha a chance to step up before he finds a new player. I recall hearing that the Pats showed an interest in him before the draft last year, so this isnt just one of Herm's pals. Hes got the size to get it done. I think Mangini sees a 3 man front of Ellis, Pouha and Robertson as having a lot of potential. No sense not giving that potential a chance to turn into production. I think this team is going to be in the mix this season, hovering somewhere around .500. And I think that in two or three years, well be ready to start one of those long streaks of playoff competition that weve seen the better managed teams go on in recent years(the Eagles are the posterboy for this idea, and of course the Titans before them).
One name that comes to mind as far as those characteristics is Drew Brees, who was also tutored by....B. Schottenheimer, who happens to be our new OC. So I don't think Tangini picks Clemens without serious input from Schotty and his belief on what Clemens can become.
hey im not sayin hes gonna be great(although i am high on him),all im sayin is theres ZERO chance the jets draft brady quinn next year.
