i didn't like this pick at first, but he has a really nice highlight video here, looks like a ballplayer....http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/draft?round=3&dl=nfl
I know, I am just being a little whiny. I like what I see from him, but something in me screams Sione Pouha...
I don't know what the scouts are talking about, because watching that video Schlegal has no problem at all getting to the ballcarrier. It does seem like he relies on momentum to bring people down at times, but that can be coached up. He certainly shows tackling ability. We're gonna love this kid in Green and White.
DT takes longer to learn at the pro level, LBs can step in as rookies, especially if they are just role players like he will be. Think Merriman, he wasn't expected to do much more than rush the passer, which he did and made the pro bowl because of it.
Eh, you gotta remember that these clips are meant to highlight the positives, not the negatives. It would be unfair to judge him only on a video that was meant to make him look good. I mean, for every good play he made in the video, he could've had 10 bad plays that were not shown. I'm not saying that's the case, I'm just hoping people don't get their hopes up too high for mid-to-late round picks...it usually ends up in unfair expectations and disappointment.
I admit this is true, though certainly I'd say that I've seen alot of iffy and even somewhat unimpressive plays in these clips. Your point is well-taken, though.
I went from freestyle wrestling to playing rugby and tackle the same way. It dosen't look pretty but the guy is still tackled backwards. He is using his weight and momentum to bring the guy down and if gets his hands on you your probably not going to get away.
Hmmm. I wonder how Schlegel and Mangold got along at Ohio State? That could be some very interesting chemistry in the Jet's lockerroom.
Im excited to see him play. He looks like he goes all out every single play and never gives up. Has talent too. Was second in tackles on a OSU linebacking core which consisted of Hawk and Carpenter.
I am normally a very positive person. I just hated watching all the hard work that the Parcell's regime did to get the Jets to respectability being slowly torn down by a regime that was too busy patting itself on the back to realize that things were coming unglued. So I wound up being a really grouchy fan. I've lived through 4 Jet collapses now (1973-77, 1987-89, 1994-1996 and 2003-2005) and I saw the last three coming and there was nothing to do but watch aghast as they occurred. This time thanks to the Internet I had the chance to bitch and vent and at least that was some relief. I like what the new regime is trying to do here. They're sticking to the fundamentals as they see them and they're conciously trying to emulate the most successful recent programs (Pats and Steelers) in the AFC. Whether it will work or not is an open question but god it's nice to be watching people who have a strong plan and are sticking to it. In a year or two we may realize that Mangini, like Belichik in Cleveland in the early 90's, is over-matched and we're in trouble. But for now he and Tannenbaum have made a minimal number of mistakes and they're still very much in the driver's seat. It's a good time to be a Jet's fan again because anything could happen in the next few years.
