NY JETS 2006 DRAFT ANALYSIS

1a) D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
A bit disappointing considering NY passed up on the best QB prospect in a decade, but a very good pick nonetheless. You've got to question passing up a talent like Leinart, but clearly the player they coveted was Clemens. You really couldn't go wrong with the #4 pick, and no matter who the Jets picked here, it wouldve been a solid acquisition.
GRADE: A

1b) Nick Mangold, C, OSU
The obvious pick at this point, and really the only pick. All the elite pass rushing linebackers (Wimbley, Lawson, and Carpenter) were off the board by this point, and Mangold was the BAP, in addition to also addressing a need. Justice wouldve been nice but he dosent seem like the type of player the organization is looking for. Mangold will solidify the center of their line for years to come
GRADE: A+

2) Kellen Clemens, QB, Oregon
Some scouts had Clemens as the best quarterback in the draft. There was some debate as to whether this pick was a reach, but all indications point to Minnesota taking him if New York hadnt traded up. Pennington's probable long-term replacement has all the tools you look for in a starting quarterback. Fleecing the Skins for their 2nd round pick was the icing on the cake.
GRADE: A

3a) Anthony Schlegal, LB, OSU
Perhaps a reach of a couple of rounds but nobody can deny Schlegal's talent. More questionable than the reach was the pick of an ILB itself, especially with 4 other ILBs on the roster. Deciding to draft an ILB instead of an OLB leads one to believe the CS may think they already have one on the roster. With Thomas manning one of the slots as a pass rusher, Hobson will likely assume the start on the other side, with Chatham competing for time.
GRADE: B- / C+

3b) Eric Smith, DB, Mich St
Their most questionable pick of 2006. With Darnell Bing and Ko Simpson still available, they reach for a player they couldve likely gotten at the end of day 2. Quite the nonathletic player with a nagging history of injuries, Smith is also suspect in coverage and will likely be used as an in-the-box safety as Rodney Harrison was used in NE. Which again leads to the question of why they would pass up a similar player of vastly superior talent in Darnell Bing. In Smith's defense, he did however lead his team in tackles.
GRADE: C- / D

4a) Brad Smith, WR, Missouri
An intruiging prospect on the rise, the Jets hope Smith will make a successful transition to wide-receiver and be their Randle-El. A athletic 6 foot 2 inch prospect weighing 212 pounds with 4.4 speed, Smith has great tools and soft hands, and would provide depth at a position where the Jets are otherwise quite weak.
GRADE: B

4b) Leon Washington, RB, FSU
A value pick similar to the Cedric Houston pick last year. The two should complement each other very well, and should form a very solid platoon at RB until New York decides to address the position with a true franchise back. Washington can be "lightning" to Houston's "thunder".
GRADE: A

5) Jake Pocsiak, TE, Wisconsin
An interesting pick, Pocsiak was most likely drafted to help block for the Jets on running downs. Losing Becht last year had a profound effect on their running game, and though this was not the sole reason for the collapse of their run game, Posiak will no doubt provide an upgrade where current starters Doug Jolley and Chris Baker offer little to no help. The Jets may also be looking to move him to fullback, where current starter BJ Askew would provide little to no help in terms of blocking.
GRADE: C / C +

6) Drew Coleman, CB, TCU
A developmental prospect with upside, Coleman was likely drafted for his speed and athleticism. A scrappy player that plays bigger than his 5'9, 170 frame would sugest, Coleman will learn under one of the league's best DB coaches in Eric Mangini, who won the Super Bowl in 05 playing Troy Brown and an undrafted free agent at corner.
GRADE: C + / B -

7) Titus Adams, DL, Nebraska
A better pick than most know. Adams has the versatility to play anywhere along the line in Mangini's new defense, and is the type of run stuffer the 3-4 thrives off of. Where he ends up, its impossible to tell now, but he has the tools to develop into a solid backup at the very least.
GRADE: B -

OVERALL
In Eric Mangini's first year as a head coach, he's proven to be the prototypical Bellichek disciple. Though many of the picks may be viewed as reaches, the Jets scouted more players than any other team in the league- a number somewhere in the 450's. Camp Mangini may have opted for a unique approach, but only time will tell whether they made the right decisions. Nonethless, the Jets' two biggest needs coming into the draft were right tackle and outside linebacker, neither of which were addressed, despite numerous opportunities. Perhaps they believe that the players they need to fill those holes are already on the roster, but many would argue otherwise. They added a few solid players here and there, but in Mangini's first year as the Jets head coach, he neglected some positions and reached for others. A solid draft, but not spectacular.

It wasnt the most exciting draft, but Im really high on Clemens and Washington. I dont expect Washington to be our back of the future, but I think he can be a good returner and a great change of pace back

Good review... Very unbiased. I'm glad to see that the Front Office scouted so many players. This is another reason why I don't trust any of these ANALysts when they say these guys were reaches...

Yeah Im not sure but I think most teams scouted around 250ish...so we scouted 200 more than the average team, or something along those lines. Or maybe Im having false memories...

I thinks Jaworski had Cutler rated above Young and Leinart in the draft. As for Clemens I know he was high on him; I think he mightve been one of the guys that had him #1, Im not sure though, that might be false memories

Good stuff, however considering the top 3 picks were given A or higher a final grade of B seems a little harsh. Higher picks have to have more impact in the grading.

Actually if Clemens doesn't break his ankle he is in the running to be a mid to late first rounder. Kiper must have said that a dozen times.

MSNCB (for what they are worth) and ESPN gave us excellent grades on our draft..... mixed sentiment seems to range from B to A+. For rookies running their first draft, it could have been a lot worse. - and maybe not much better.
