The Draft So Far

Mezz you said it. Mangini believes in football players, and thats what hes taking. I'm loving the picks so far!:up:

 

I've liked each pick because i realize they have all been picked as "Role-players." Except Washington and Smith(The QB/WR).

Washington behind a real OL will be scary and Smith was the best "project" player in this draft IMO. Both Washington and Smith would put their teams on their backs throughout their college careers and put their body in harm for the win.

Schlegel was the 2nd leading tackler this past season at Ohio State and was the biggest "leader" on the team. Schlegel was also the team captain at Air Force AS A SOPHMORE.... Eric Smith was the smartest player and the team captain/leader at Michigan State. Despite his not-as-fast speed he was smart enough to use his body and angles to get to where he needed to and breakup plays.

This TE from Wisconsin was also a ROLE PLAYER for Wisc. He was their best blocker and never complained. He stuck to his role and will be a great Goal line/ ST/ and 3rd and short blocker for us for years to come.

 

the fact that we got mangold clemmens and d'brick plus a future 2nd rounder with our first 3 picks is just awesome....2 best linemen at their important o-line positions in the draft, and a qb with potential to be a great qb for us who i absolutely wanted all along.....

our 3rd round picks were easy to understand, but i would have rather made a selection of fs ko simpson because this guy will be a good player in this league, with unlimited potenital if he is coached up....seriously the bills got a steal on this guy and i still can't figure out why safetys kept going off the list before him rds. 1-3

our 4th round was great though imo, as we add a playmaker in brad smith, who can possibly become something great down the road, and leon washington who could at the very least be a great 3rd down back for us later on

 

Exactly you got it right on the money. Their drafting role players and players who lay it on the line and do whatever it takes to win. Thats what wins championships.

this eric smith guy really reminds me of eric coleman which is a very good thing

Ah Mezz, sure a pleasure to have you post. I couldn't agree more.

I can't wait for another week to go by so these Jetty-Come-Latelies can disappear along with their hundreds of threads on how they're so much smarter than anyone else...

 

Absolutely right, Mezz. This isn't surprising, considering you're actually a legit football guy.

 

No offense but of course he didn't complain, he was just happy to have any role. And whats this about him being the best blocker. Their fulback actually was possibly the best blocking FB in the draft and Joe Thomas, a tackle, is projected as a top 10 pick next year.

 

Another underlying factor towards taking smart players is they grasp and promote the system much easier. With a new coaching staff coming in with a whole new system the new players will eat up the new system to please the coaching staff and start the tough process of changing the mentality of our football program.

Rather than workout warriors we have guys who can show that playing smart and within the system will produce results. This kind of approach becomes contagious in practice. The practices then translate over to the games. Next thing you know we are looking at a winning program in which guys want nothing more to follow coach to hell and back.

 

Mezz I agree with you except about the second rounder. I think if you've got a second round pick that's so high up you can catch a guy who could've gone in the first round you go ahead make a pick there, especially in a draft with as much talent as this one. It'll be nice having the extra second next year but I'd rather have one good player than 2 mediocre ones. Time will tell if it's a good decision, and I'm not exactly sour on Clemens, it's just not the move I would have made.

 

In general, I agree..... however, there were some real, I mean REEEEEAL long reaches sprinkled into this draft. I understand the whole character, hard working with smarts philosophy, but....

Going into this draft, I saw our biggest needs as a RT, a QB to develop, and a NT. One out of three isn't good. The run blocking on the O line has not been improved at ALL. I was thrilled with the first two rounds. After that, we left some serious talent on the board that could have improved this team markedly. Not to the extremes Edwards went to, but you can't draft all choir boys either..... but that's what they did anyway. One extreme can be as bad as the other; sometimes you have to overlook small indescrepencies.... like Justin Miller last year.

Every scouting report on the draft picks the FO made had the words "Productive", "top intagebles" and "team player" written somewhere in there. That's the kind of player I want... And apparently so does the Front Office. This team is heading north...

 

I understand your point about the 2nd rounder, but I think we really wanted Clemens, so you have to make that move. Plus if Washington takes a step back this year, then we have a high to mid round 2nd rounder, which can be used any number of ways- trade, move up to 1st, etc...

 

i like most of the picks, the safety and TE, i am not crazy about
