But if he goes back to NE for the rest of this year, he gets to be a free agent next year. If he goes to Oakland they will either extend or franchise him.

By league rule, if he does not report in 5 days from the issuance of this, he cannot play for anyone this year, and will still be under contract next year for this year's salary. Doesn't sound hollow to me.

Also, this pretty much makes him Raiders property.

I don't think so. He's still playing for one more big contract. Of course he took plays off in NE too, so....

Great point. I would imagine the terms of the trade would dictate whether or not a physical is required to complete the trade. It wouldn't be too farfetched for a player his age. And it wouldn't be to farfetched for the Raiders to fail him. Lesser teams have done through the years. This could be the key factor in the league's eventual decision.

Apparently, this is an official trade. The Raiders sent a notice to Seymour that he has 5 days to report or he's suspended. If the trade was not official, the Pats would have to send him the notice.

If the ultimatum is true, then that would definitely clinch it.

The Jets should call Oakland and offer a 1 and a 4 for Seymour. A defensive line of Jenkins, Ellis, and Seymour would be excellent, and Belichick would be livid.

Why throw in the 4? They're fucked if he doesn't show up.

Tell them you'll help cut there losses and give them a #2 for him.

This is awesome! I hope he retires or just sits out for the year. I also hope Crabtree doesn't sign and ends up getting drafted next year for 1/4 of his offer this year. I hope Brandon Marshall holds out and the Broncos bench him for the year. Basically I'm enjoying the circus because it doesn't involve the Jets for a change. I wish bad things on all teams but the Jets.:metal:

actually it would have been better for the raiders if he didn't report. They aren't competitive this year, and by pushing him back a year they let their young players develop. now they pretty much have to extend him to justify the trade.

Well i get what ur saying but he really shouldn't be pisst at the pats really. You always hear players say "but this is a business" after every type of contract or trade negotiation. The pats just got a 1st round pick from a team that will most likely be picking in the top 5 that year for an aging player in his 30s who they would have had for only 1 more year cause they can't afford him. I bet he was very surprised they got that much for him. This trade just doesn't make any sense at all and the pats HAD to take it.

I understand that Seymour is one of the NFL's best DLmen and it would be a good trade for a team that's in a super bowl hunt and 1 impact player away. The raiders are not even close to a SB they are the worst franchise in the NFL rite now they need to rebuild hardcore and you rebuild through the draft Just take the jets for example this franchise was in shambles when herm left and Tanny brought this team back to respectability in 4 years being smart in the draft epically in the 1st round Dbrick, Mangold, Revis, Keller, and now Sanchez. You don't just throw a 1st round pick away for 1 MAYBE 2 years of service on a team thats going nowhere.

I really wanna know what the assistants were like when Al told them about this trade. Does no1 have the balls to sit the man down and be like LISTEN thats really not a good idea and explain why? i just dont get it. it was only a few years ago the raiders were a SB contender year in and year out. Granted, that team was made up of alot of older veterans that have retired.
You let RANDY MOSS go for a 4th round pick and trade away a 1st round pick for Richard Seymour?? Jesus Christ WTF happened to the brain trust in that organization?

Sey might even get some playing time in vs Chargers.

BB retools his team on the fly. 2010 draft -1,2,2,2 and 2011 draft- 1,1,2,3

BB may even trade a 2nd next year and get another first in 2011.

    BB is a Football God

'Blindsided' by trade, Seymour now ready to join Raiders

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Richard Seymour ended his five-day sit out and will join the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, saying he was initially "blindsided" by the trade from the New England Patriots.

"I am ready to play some football," Seymour told NFL Network and NFL.com through his publicist.

Seymour was acquired last Sunday for a 2011 first-round pick but did not report to the Raiders, raising speculation he did not want to join Oakland.

In his first public comments since the deal, Seymour told the Boston Herald on Saturday that he was taken aback when coach Bill Belichick told him of the trade, which is sending him from one of the NFL's model franchises to the one with the worst record over the last six years.

"First of all, I was blindsided by this whole event," Seymour told the Herald. "When you get blindsided, you should take a moment to gather your thoughts. I have a lot of personal issues more pressing than football."

Seymour has four children and is the guardian of a 15-year-old cousin, who had recently joined him in the Boston area. Seymour's family will return to South Carolina, while he flies to Oakland on Saturday to join his new team.

Seymour said he has been in regular contact with Raiders owner Al Davis and coach Tom Cable. He said he has talked with the Raiders about a possible contract extension or a promise not to be designated the franchise player following the season, but was given no guarantees.

Seymour turns 30 next month and is in the final year of a contract that pays him about $3.7 million this year. Had he not reported, he could have been suspended for the season and had his contract roll over to 2010.

"I didn't demand anything to go there," he said. "I'm happy to go there, and I told them that. But me and my family have never been separated. This was a difficult transition."

Seymour has been a stalwart in New England since being drafted sixth overall in 2001. He played on three Super Bowl winners with the Patriots, recording 39 career sacks and being selected to the Pro Bowl for five straight seasons beginning in 2002.

The Raiders were looking to upgrade a run defense that was the worst in the league during the exhibition season and has been the worst over the past six seasons. Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, Oakland has had the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 141.7 yards per game on the ground and 122 touchdowns rushing.

Despite his late arrival, Seymour said he plans to be on the field for Oakland's opener Monday night against San Diego.

"I'll be the guy on top of the quarterback," he said.

Cable is expected to address Seymour's pending arrival after practice Saturday.
