I believe he is a good 3-4 strongside end who was missing a good NT next to him. There are a few guys I'd rather have over him, but only a few. I give him a solid chance to be the defensive MVP next year. Not as good as the chance I give Jenkins or Harris, but a good chance.
Just to further the argument: in retrospect Pete Kendall was clearly one of the five most indispensable Jets in 2007. We lost him and the season was destroyed.
I have the same concerns as you, but you're going out of your way to point them out for a guy that is seeing his first action as an NFL back. Why? Well, he's the guy you want to ride this offseason. That's fine, we all need one or two of those. You're just not doing it with much objectivity. Most runningbacks get nicked up in their first season because the hitting is more explosive. But Greene has played pretty much the entire offseason with an ankle sprain, so it says something for his toughness. Rib injuries are different than just playing through pain because they have a huge effect on your ability to breathe, and NFL players kind of need to be able to breathe, especially the ones that spend their day running the ball. Could there be an issue with durability? Possibly. But I don't see you making an issue of it with any of the other players that have gotten hurt. Thomas Jones is known for his durability, but he spent a good portion of his rookie campaign in Arizona wearing the tag of 'injury-prone'.
1. Jenkins 2. Revis 3. Washington 4. Scott 5. Ferguson (because we know he can consistently protect our rookie QB's blindside and help prevent him from taking the sort of hits that got the likes of David Carr shook).
1A. Jenkins 1B. Revis 3. Mangold 4. Feely 5. Cotchery This is my list for this year. The first 3 are self explanitory. I think with this offense, we're going to be attempting a lot of field goals. I think Feely has the ability to determine 3 or 4 games this year. Cotchery is our receiving corps. I know Keller is there, but we are only going to have a legitimate passing attack if J Cotch steps his game up a notch. He was a great number 2, now he needs to be a number 1.
Sanchez? He is not someone that will make or break this team. He already has low expectations, and I'm sure the gameplan will never revolve around him. If he was to get hurt, we still have KC, not a huge deal. I don't agree with Sanchez being a "important" factor for this team this year. My list: 1. Jenkins - If we want to dominate the defensive side of the ball, this is the guy who will make it possible. He is a huge (no pun intended) factor in our defense. 2. OL - We have no depth, our main gameplan will go straight out the window if our line starts to fall apart because of injuries. Running the ball would no longer be an option, then what would we do? 3. Revis - Our CB depth isn't that good, and without him, our pass defense will be shot. 4. Scott - The main man in this defense, only because he knows Rex's D so well already, he is going to be the general for our players. You need your general. 5. Cotchery - He is the only respectable reciever we have right now, if he goes down, what little respect towards the pass will go straight out the window. All any defense will do is double Keller and load up the box.
I actually like Greene. It's just like I said though, there's this misconception that the guy is going to be destroying people in his way, and I just don't see it. He actually reminds me of a mix between Leon and TJ, oddly enough. Too big to be as elusive as Leon but he has the skills to make people miss and he also has that slow grind that TJ has made his trademark. Hopefully they come together and he becomes a real skill player. I've seen flashes so far. I just don't think he's going to be like Jerome Bettis(sp?). I'm more against the notion of what people think he is than what he is.
I don't think he's going to be Jerome Bettis, either. They aren't even physically similar. His MO in college wasn't completely destroying everyone in front of him. He was hard to bring down, never gave up on plays, he never fumbled once in the NCAA, and he knows how to lower a shoulder and punish defensive backs that try to tackle him. That's that kind of stuff that I expect of him and I am confident he will deliver. I also think he is going to be very effective in short yardage situations.
No they're not similar really. While SG is a big dude for his position I'm confused by all of the comparisons and claims that he's that type of player.
I really don't like to compare players, but on this board I haven't seen a whole lot of that. I've seen some retarded comparisons on other boards, though. Say what you want about TGG, people here tend to keep each other more grounded than on other sites.
1) Jenkins 2) Revis 3) Cotchery 4) Mangold 5) Brick Jenkins and Revis are clearly our two best players. The last 3 are just because we have a rookie QB. He needs protection and a reliable receiver. If we had an experienced QB, Id throw Rhodes and Pace in their instead of Cotchery and Mangold, and still have brick.
The title of the thread leaves it to interpretation. It's indispensable, not valuable or best. Which is why it may be blasphemy, but you could probably leave off Revis. I own his jersey and think he's a top-2 corner in the NFL, but a top 3 group of corners consisting of Lito, Lowery and Strickland is good enough to get by, especially with the talent on the rest of the team. My top 5: 1) Jenkins 2) D'Brick 3) Mangold 4) Keller 5) Cotchery
It was mostly around the draft that people were saying it, but there's still some people with that opinion. It pops up every so often. Either way, I think they're in for a rude awakening.
1. Jenkins -Lynchpin of the defense...As he goes, the D goes 2. Washington - from starting field position to offensive scoring threat, O is for Leon 3. Revis - our very own shut-down corner 4. Mangold - Anchor of a formidable O-line 5. Rex Ryan - we haven't won any titles without a Ryan on the staff
