last night as i was laying with my 2 sons, 2 weeks from 7 and 2 1/2, and my lil guy asked for a story.so i told him the story of the 2002 New York Jets.started with explaining about the 38 year old qb vinny T and the 1 last hope he could revive 1998.and how a young qb was eager to come out from beneath the shadows.1-4 old qb gets injuried on comes the young QB full of spunk headbutting Offensive linemen and firing up a dead franchise. then i tell them the famous"you play to win the game" speech.and how a team came together with a season vetern o line and a hall of fame running back curtis martin.to a reciving corp of overachievers coles and chrebet and the dynamic returners morton and moss.to a defensive that couldnt punch its way out of a wet paperbag was now punching back and hitting hard. then there was the last game of the season....the jets vs the soon to be best record in the NFC Brett Favre led Green Day Packers.and how it was a 415pm game and the jets needed a little help from an arch nemesis, the Bill Belicheck,Tom Brady New England Patriots vs the hated Ricky Williams Miami Dolphins.and how it was looking bleak with the dolphins up11 with 4 minutes to go.and daddy and his friends stayed out and tailgated until the adam viniteri field goal sailed through the uprights.and then it was pure pandemonium in the concrete jungle called the meadowlands. the new york jets had only won the AFC East Division once in its existence and that was clinched on the road.well that day we would not be denied....... i then continued on to talk about the playoff game 6 days later and how the jets would blow out the high powered offense led by Peyton Manning.and how that was the greatest 7 days in New York Jets history,in my eyes at least. my oldest son then said Dad,i cant wiat to go on Friday to the Jets game.he wanted me to tell him the story of the season when Chad got hurt.... ha ha i laughed and asked which season was that.he replied by saying well the jets got rid of chad b/c he was always hurt and now he is healthy why dont they get him back?? and he also said he never liked Brett favre and is glad he is gone. now my next mission as a Jets fan father is to sell my boys on Mark Sanchez.hopefully my future bedtime story is even better than my last......
cool story i remember that season. that was one of the best moments ever the 41-0 blowout of the colts
Hey Bro, great story. Reminded me of that magical late season turn around and a Christamas never to be forgotten. A bedtime story of fairy tale proportions!
Haha, I was at a bowling alley for that game with my girlfriend at the time's family. Her uncle was in town and we had never met; she wouldn't take no for an answer. Said I had to come. I sat in the bar the entire time, only running out to bowl when it was my turn. The entire day was horribly awkward for everyone but me. We broke up about a week later.
thats my kid ex favorite player according to me. he still likes him though.so it is my job to undue the damage i have done and reinstall a new favorite player.starting with buying a new jersey this friday night.
this is sorta like the jersey thread. little kids take time to mold.you dont want someone who might be off the team by next year
I remember that stadium erupting in cheers when that field goal went thru the uprights and i got a warm feeling inside - Great moment!
There is only one better Meadowlands experience for me then that last game of the 02 season(98 Jax PO game). It is one of those days I will never forget in my life. I have never heard the stadium so loud during a TV timeout. It was awesome, the stadium was shaking and you could see the players get a jolt from it. Good times.
The stadium was absolute bedlam. That was such an awesome time to be there. I remember walking in to the game watching the pats game on somebody's directv in the lot and after the kick - straight up feeling like a million bucks when i got in. That really was one of the best feelings I ever had as a jets fan. The jets - jags playoff when it was FREEZING was rather amazing too.
that was the last game we had a full house before kickoff. seriously no lie. and that was our opening drive. paul hackett was a genius
You're supposed to lie to your kids and tell them we're going to win a Superbowl very soon. That's the kind of bedtime stories you're supposed to be telling them. This is what I did to get my kids to be real Jets fans. This way they're always holding out hope and then always getting fucked. That makes them true, dyed-in-the-wool Jets fans. Now my kids have kids of their own, so now we can all start lying to the grandkids: "Any year now buddy!"
That Colts game was the last game I have been to, I was 13 and it was epic. They took a picture of the fans around the tunnel where I was standing for the yearbook so I am forever immortalized.
dude i had theat picture on my cubicle wall back in 03. firemen ed stading at the top of the tunnel and the 3 TE's becht baker and dearth did a 3 way high 5......place went nuts
