Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 8, 2009 12:44 PM ET Mark Sanchez may have received the first team snaps in practice, but Kellen Clemens will get them to open their preseason schedule. The Jets announced Saturday that Clemens will start the team's preseason opener against the Rams. Even with Sanchez getting increased practice reps this weekend, it would have been a shock for him to start the first preseason game. That would have essentially signaled the competition was over. After Saturday's practice, Sanchez and Clemens indicated that the two quarterbacks will now take turns running the first team in practice. The same will probably be true in the preseason, where Sanchez seems likely to get a chance in the second game. The real test will be who starts New York's third preseason game. The smart money all offseason has been on Sanchez starting in Week One, and Clemens will likely have to play lights out against the Rams to beat the odds. thought it should be posted
this isn't a shock. Sanchez had a good practice today, but i'd like to see how he handles the Baltimore Ravens starters in week 2.
I don't see the difference, usually the 2nd stringer plays more anyways in the pre-season. Besides, it would be better to start Sanchez out against second stringers in his first NFL game opposed to throwing him to the wolves right off the bat. Look for Sanchez to get the start in week two or three.
no surprise here. rex ryan is gonna give clemens the opportunity to fail again. just like he did in his last nfl stint as the jets qb. sanchez will be under center on opening day dudes.
What is the prediction on the amount of boo's Clemens receives when he trots out there? I bet Sanchez will get a large roar from the 30,000 in attendance.
Glad KC is starting he is the veteran here and he deserves the opportunity to show what that he can move this offense. Sanchez is a rookie he can come in and take some snaps in the 3d quarter. Good job by Coach Ryan.
I don't get why anyone would boo Clemens. He's been nothing but a good sport and a professional since the Jets drafted him. The fact that him losing the QB competition would be better for the organization in the short and long terms doesn't mean any vitriol should be directed his way.
I doubt Clemens gets many boos, if he screws it up on the opening drive he'll probably hear it, I think he'll at least be given a chance by the fans to perform.
This is the fan base that cheered as Chad hobbled off. I think booing is more expected than anything.
Looks like the game will be on NFL Network: ST. LOUIS @ NY JETS Friday 8/14 - 7:00 PM ET NFL Network STL Affiliates: KTVI (FOX) St. Louis NYJ Affiliates: WCBS (CBS) New York
I would boo, just like I did when we drafted the kid. The last pick I cheered for before Sanchez was Chad and if not for all his injuries things might be way different. Under Mangini our 1st round picks weren't much to cheer about. Except for Mangold who was a steal when we got him. Go Sanchez!!!
haha D'Brick, Mangold, Revis, Keller - what a bunch of BUMS! I would boo you if I had the opportunity.
