Temperature keeps rising for Jets' Tannenbaum With Mangini gone, heat is on general manager by Mike Florio > http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/2009-07-03/temperature-keeps-rising-for-jets-tannenbaum
that really is a terrible article. how is it tannenbaum's fault pace got suspended? Also that really was a masterful trade to get Sanchez so no matter what Sanchez becomes he should not be at fault for that. Also if clemens starts, that doesnt mean diddly squat about Tannenbaum, it is very much my opinion that rookie QB's should never ever ever ever start from opening day, I prefer them to sit a year to learn the ropes before giving them a real chance to win a starting job. so yeah this article would be bad if it wasnt written by florio....
Friday, Jul. 3, 2009 - 9:25 a.m. ET Jets GM Mike TannenbaumNew York Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum likely isn't sleeping all that well these days. The long-term employee of the team, who has worked his way up the ladder into a position of ultimate authority — and thus accountability — now has nowhere to go. Except out the door. Last year, Tannenbaum behaved like a desperate man, spending millions of dollars on a variety of free agents, while ignoring the quarterback position. Until Brett Favre became available. And if success is determined by whether the Jets made it to the playoffs, the various moves from a season ago fairly can be regarded as a massive failure. Tannenbaum, however, didn't shoulder the blame for the misadventures. Instead, coach Eric Mangini was fired, after only three years on the job. The next time owner Woody Johnson decides change is needed, Tannenbaum likely won't be quite so lucky. In the wake of Mangini's departure, Tannenbaum has continued to throw the ball deep. This year, he traded up 12 spots in the first round of the draft, via a deal with Mangini's new team, to land quarterback Mark Sanchez. But serious potential problems remain. Tannenbaum allowed veteran receiver Laveranues Coles to give up $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for a free-and-clear release, and Coles ended up with a better deal in Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the Jets haven't replaced Coles' skill and production. Related Links Jets camp: Ryan banking on defense NFL suspends Jets LB Calvin Pace Sanchez, Stafford helping each other prep Florio: Predicting Rex Ryan's '09 season .Last year's first-round draft pick, a much-hyped workout warrior named Vernon Gholston, had a grossly substandard rookie season — and word recently has surfaced that Gholston didn't look so good in offseason underwear practices. Most recently, one of last year's high-priced free agents who performed well in 2008 potentially performed well in 2008 due to the ingestion of performance-enhancing substances. Defensive end/linebacker Calvin Pace consequently will miss the first four games of the coming season, putting even more pressure on Gholston to fulfill his potential. Then there's the looming question of whether Sanchez will beat out the guy who was deemed to be sufficiently unfit to hold the job, fueling last year's pursuit of Brett Favre. Last month, coach Rex Ryan called the battle between Sanchez and Kellen Clemens a "dogfight" (not the best choice of words, even if the Jets plan to sign Mike Vick). "I have to do what's best for our football team," Ryan said at the time. "If that means we play a rookie, so be it. If we play Kellen Clemens, so be it. The guy is going to have to earn that job." Let's assume Ryan is being truthful, and he isn't merely hoping to ensure that Sanchez's sudden money and fame doesn't go to his head. What if Clemens legitimately wins the job? It would be disastrous for Tannenbaum. The guy he disregarded a year ago (but at least didn't cut so that he could lead a division rival to the playoffs) will have outperformed the man whom Tannenbaum made a big splash to fill the void created after Favre "retired." And that brings us to Favre. Adding Sanchez made it easy (at the time) to release Favre from the reserve-retired list. But if Favre goes to Minnesota and has a season much more successful than his year with the Jets and if Sanchez's game-day headgear is a baseball hat and not a helmet, Tannenbaum's entire handling of the quarterback position will be undermined. Significantly. Through it all, Tannenbaum is a very smart guy. And he's smart enough to realize that he enters the 2009 season under more pressure than ever to perform — and that the dots leading to Tannenbaum being terminated come January aren't all that difficult to connect. Who takes responsibility for Favre signing??? GM or owner. I say the owner had a hard on for him.... that's why Tanny is still here. Overall, I think he's done a good job, just keep the owner off the field.
"But if Favre goes to Minnesota and has a season much more successful than his year with the Jets and if Sanchez's game-day headgear is a baseball hat and not a helmet, Tannenbaum's entire handling of the quarterback position will be undermined. Significantly." How does this make any sense? Florio isn't even trying anymore. He's just aimlessly throwing shit on the wall to see what sticks.
Ever see the pictures or Video of Florio - What a Jackal... I've read his site from the begining and it's always been interesting in a National Enquirer sort of way but, I guess it shows the state of the media when this guy gets picked up for the big stage... And yeah, ALWAYS a Jets hater - And his favorite ploy has always been to write stuff about the Jets to get Jets fans to reply and Patsy fans to fire back - all creating traffic based on stupid, baselss opinions on the Jets... He probably owes Jets fans for where he is today. I think he fails to grasp that Tanny doesn't make all the decisions and I'd bet the Head Coach has A LOT more input than Tannebaum at the draft or even on a Favre move - Tanny is the salesman and accountant who gets the deal done and the player to the team - But, the coach and scouts set up the board. Every team has it's GM / Owner / HC relationships - I don't think Florio has a clue to how the Jets are set up and I'd bet my house that Rex Ryan was the deciding factor in every player move made since he got here - as Mangini did when he was here (Favre might have been a twist of the arm by The Owner).. IMO, Tanny will be here for quite a while - There would have to be some supreme GM available that possibly has a relationship with Rex - But, overall I say Rex makes the moves and Tanny gets the deals done - Jets can go 8-8 for the next 3 years and depending on the injuries / circumstances Tanny would probably just then get to the Hot Seat.
The internet, my man. See all of those bloggers posting and being reported as journalists? The ones that kelly posts all day long? He is their grandfather. I used to check out the site he got his start at - NFLTalk.com, before it was bought out by ESPN Insider. The Rumor Mill started out as baseless speculation and got more legitimate as they got NFL sources. http://archive.profootballtalk.com/4-17-06.htm Readers constantly ask us how a guy with no journalistic training and no prior connection to the NFL has ended up with the biggest independent pro football site on the web. Our standard response is that, like all true Hulkamaniacs, we ate our vitamins and said our prayers. But from a more practical standpoint, yours truly got into this business as a way to possibly generate a market for Quarterback of the Future, a football story that involves two contemporary college athletes who play for the 1960 Pittsburgh Steelers. So after yours truly landed with NFLtalk.com in 2000, QBF was launched with much fanfare on the site in March 2001. And within a month, NFLtalk.com and its various affiliated sites went dark, with ESPN.com purchasing the web addresses in the hopes of directing the traffic to its Insider service. In lieu of spending any real time or money marketing QBF, yours truly ended up working for ESPN.com for six months before launching PFT. QBF became an afterthought as we built up the web site. But now that PFT has expanded to more than 55 million hits and more than 430,000 unique visitors in March 2006, we thought that it might be a good time to dust off QBF for the throng of recent arrivals to the site who might be looking for something to read once the NFL offseason slows down a bit in May and June. It's the American Dream, Douchebag-Style.
I agree his take on Clemens and Sanchez is awfully ridiculous, but he's not all wrong: "Tannenbaum allowed veteran receiver Laveranues Coles to give up $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for a free-and-clear release, and Coles ended up with a better deal in Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the Jets haven't replaced Coles' skill and production." Yep. This is a real issue.
Tying up 6M in cap space on a WR that was clearly past his prime, was 1 concussion away from completely retiring, and (at the time) were in much need for cap space...I think we did the right thing.
I don't understand how Jets fans cannot see that Florio is dead on in this article. He is right about Vernon Gholston and the fact that Tannenbaum might have reached for a guy who probably is going to be a bust. He also talks about the Brett Favre fiasco in which Tannenbaum gave up a big draft pick to get him which ultimately proved to be a waste of time and money. He could go up to Minny and tear it up. In fact I hope it happens. The article talks about Sanchez and how big of an unknown this is with only Kellen Clemens left to be the guy. The Jets have QB problems and their receiving group is thin as hell. They could'nt even keep Coles on the roster and he went to Cincy. (I love Florio's comments on that one). Now to boot Pace has been suspended and they have no back up because we go back to Gholston who isn't good enough to be second string. Why can't everyone face it that the Jets have big problems, they are not as good as everyone thinks they might be and they are going to have a bad season. Tannenbaum is clueless and the organization is going backwards. Great article Mike!
