And assuming that we use our second pick (be it at 29 or 35) on a tackle like winston or mcneill, when would we address and get our need of a talented 3-4 olb? After our second pick we might not have another pick until 97, assuming that we give up our 71st pick. we may still have that if we trade a pick from next yr's draft. would a guy like thomas howard last till early or late third?
Howard wouldn't last, Gocong would be a great pick but I don't think he makes it to 97. Maybe we could package our two fourths to get into the mid third if Howard or Gocong slips there.
Winston might be gone and McNeil has fallen to late 2nd/early 3rd b/c of the back issues... We could take OLB with the 29 or 35 pick. Then OL with the next few picks.

Not gonna happen. Just think of it this way. Would you trade Reggie Bush for D'Brick and the #29 pick? Don't tell me you would. The Saints won't. The only way they trade out of that spot is for a ton of picks. Deuce's contract doesn't matter because most of it isn't guaranteed and as good of a runningback he was, the past two seasons he hasn't done much and he's coming off of a serious knee injury.

i never thought of it like that, but that does make a lot of sense. if lawson falls to us at 29 that'd be great but thats unlikely and even more unlikely if we traded our 29. hopefully carpenter lasts till 35. And getting OL with our next few middle round picks makes sense because a lot of the top lineman were drafted in the middle rounds. this way we get bush and we still fill some of our other needs.
You could actually say the same for the Titans when they draft a QB. But they'll cut McNair more than likely. You can have a two RB system though, but you can't have a two QB system. Regardless, Deuce got 12.5 in signing and option bonuses. I'm not saying he'll be cut, but let's just assume the Saints take Bush and cut Deuce. There's not much of a cap hit that would be taken. The Saints did this before when they drafted Deuce when they still had Ricky. Fact is, Deuce is coming off of a serious knee injury and two very disappointing seasons. If the Saints don't draft Bush, it's because they got a ransom of draft picks/players to trade down from #2. Not because they only get a late first round pick or an early second round pick.
Well, one of those guys is gone and they got two first rounders for it. If Bush was taken by the Texans, the Saints probably would have taken Mario Williams at #2 if they stayed there. Now that's where you could have questioned it. Darren Howard at #33 (2nd round pick #2) in 2000, Charles Grant at #25 in 2002, Jonathan Sullivan at #6 in 2003 (trading #17 and #18 to get up there), and #17 for Will Smith in 2004. Bush just isn't a guy that you pass on. You know that. Everyone knows that. As I've said already, it's not like the Saints are golden at the RB position right now. Deuce has a huge question mark on him at this very minute. The thing is though, how some people can believe that the Jets, or any other team, can trade up a few spots to get Bush by getting rid of just a late first rounder and maybe a few late late round picks thrown in, is just rediculous.
brad - I hope you stick around here. You seem to be very knowledgeble. I'm just wondering how much Benson is willing to spend on a #2 pick especially the 3rd RB they will have drafted in 7 years. I have to imagine they would want to get out of that spot as quickly as possible
I think they would like to trade out too, and I'm not trying to say there's no way the Jets or any other team besides the Saints will draft Bush tomorrow, but Loomis isn't a guy that's going to take the bare minimum in a trade. If there's anything he's good at, it's money. Kyle Turley even called him a bean counter. I honestly think right now it's 50/50 that the Saints stay at #2 and draft Bush, or trade out of it. But these reports out there of the Jets trading just #4 and #35 and maybe #71 or whatever they are, I just don't see happening. This is the type of guy you throw the draft value chart out the window for. I mean, the Chargers ended up with the #4 pick in 2004, #13 in 2005, and 2 third round picks, for the #1 pick in 2004. And I would assume Bush is graded even higher by many teams than Eli Manning was back in 2004. The only difference is Eli plays an even more premium position.
