Don't know too much about the business end of football so I'm sure someone around here can answer this question. Here's the scenario. (I'm changing the names to protect the innocent. I don't wanna put a hex on anyone, lol) Whamchez is practicing with the team even though his deal hasn't been finished yet. During practice he blows out his knee, and has to sit the season, can that effect his contract? Just curious as to whether this kid is risking anything by being out on the field without a contract.
From an article written a month or so ago when the Pats third round pick suffered a season-ending injury during practice: http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/05/06/despite-injury-tyrone-mckenzie-will-still-get-a-contract/
Also rookies are only allowed to participate in up to training camp without a contract. Once training camp starts, they have to have a contract to be with the team.
