Just finished watching the Jets-Titans game on NFL Replay (take heart Nolan subjects, it shall be yours) and I have a few thoughts, mostly ridiculous. 1-I know we won and we beat an undefeated team, so we obviously did a good job, but we left a TON of plays on the field. Meaning: dammmmmmn, we cuh be sum balluhz 1a-athletes will thrive under Rex Ryan but more importantly, 2-Dustin Keller is our #1 WR 3-our TE depth is worse that we thought ELABORATION: 1-But I'm serious. THere was nothing in that game that said Brett Favre is putting us on his back. If anything, Brett going for the gold while the rest of the team made the "smart" move held us back. He did hit some nice underneath darts though, I give the GOAT his due. But I'm telling you, losing Brett Favre is not going to hurt us. Not one damn bit. 1-There were a lot of times where players would not be on the same page because they read a situation differently. Bryan Thomas letting Chris johnson leak out on a bootleg, but no one being there to pick him up, Mangold passing up Bullock to pick up, like, the safety while Brick blocks no one. These things happen to every team, but what I saw was a lot of thinking. Not a lot of killing. Killing instinct. I did not frame David Carradine... I emailed Randy Lange at some point about something and he very kindly returned my email and dropped this nugget, which I might have already shared here somewhere: when the Ravens played a team the second time, they'd often see a long Injured List. They just hit so ahrd people didn't want to play them again. They called it Bird Flu. Privately, Randy said Bart Scott mentioned possible Jet Lag, but felt it a bit hardcore for print. Nugget, nation. So yeah, we're gonna have a bitch on our hands, a screaming pop-eyed blood on the roll bitch of a D. And 2-Dustin Keller He's 6'2" 240. It's like people don't see the #1 WR right in front of their face. And it's not me saying that: they lined him up out wide as often as not. Giggity giggity giggity I'm geeked to see what he can do this year. 3-Kareem Brown, I hope you got better hands than hoes: http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/74/l_91c155f0e7144c64a5738c5da7d47e58.jpg
After that game the Titans DBs said they were in the wrong coverage the whole game and that if they played the Jets again things would be different. I think what they meant was they came in worried about the long ball and got beat short. In my opinion the reason the Jet offense collapsed late in the 08 season is teams stopped respecting the deep pass and took away the short passes which were working before. And the defense collapsed because teams realized none of our LBs could cover. Having Bart Scott and better defensive game planning should take care of that. As to the Jets lacking a deep threat, that could still be a problem, but just using Lethal Weapon 6 more often should be enough to make the offense better.
